Spyridon Sfetas Autonomist Movements of the Slavophones in 1944: The Attitude of the Communist Party of Greece and the Protection of the Greek-Yugoslav Border The founding of the Slavo-Macedonian Popular Liberation Front (SNOF) in Kastoria in October 1943 and in Florina the following November was a result of two factors: the general negotiations between Tito's envoy in Yugoslav and Greek Macedonia, Svetozar Vukmanovic-Tempo, the military leaders of the Greek Popular Liberation Army (ELAS), and the political leaders of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in July and August 1943 to co-ordinate the resistance movements; and the more specific discussions between Leonidas Stringos and the political delegate of the GHQ of Yugoslav Macedonia, Cvetko Uzunovski in late August or early September 1943 near Yannitsa. The Yugoslavs’ immediate purpose in founding SNOF was to inculcate a Slavo- Macedonian national consciousness in the Slavophones of Greek Macedonia and to enlist the Slavophones of Greek Macedonia into the resistance movement in Yugoslav Macedonia; while their indirect aim was to promote Yugoslavia's views on the Macedonian Question. The KKE had recognised the Slavophones as a "SlavoMacedonian nation" since 1934, in accordance with the relevant decision by the Comintern, and since 1935 had been demanding full equality for the minorities within the Greek state; and it now acquiesced to the founding of SNOF in the belief that this would draw into the resistance those Slavophones who had been led astray by Bulgarian Fascist propaganda. However, the Central Committee of the Greek National Liberation Front (EAM) had not approved the founding of SNOF, believing that the new organisation would conduce more to the fragmentation than to the unity of the resistance forces.

  • Greece and the Macedonian Controversy
Mediterranean Politics Volume I Edited by Richard Gillespie Fairleigh Dickinson University Press MADISON · TEANECK Pinter Publishers LONDON 1994 5 Echoes from the Past: Greece and the Macedonian Controversy Kyriakos Kentrotis One direct result of the revolutionary changes in the political and social system of the East European countries since 1989 has been a revival of forgotten nationalist dreams and territorial claims. These developments have turned the Balkans into a disaster area, fully justifying the region's old nickname of 'the powder-keg of Europe'. No sooner did one of the basic factors of post-war stability, the USSR, begin to totter, as revolutionary changes shattered its socio-political foundations, than a chain reaction of forces was initiated in Eastern Europe. The immediate outcome has been an endeavour to establish a new status quo - not, usually, by peaceful means. Those who are familiar with the situation in the Balkans are well aware that the harsh nationalist and religious strife which at present is ripping apart the once united Yugoslavia is nothing new. It existed in latent form even before the Second World War ended. But the communist regime covered it over with a thin veneer and relegated it to the margins of history. After Yugoslavia's federal structure collapsed, Europe was shocked by the civil conflict that suddenly convulsed the former union. From mid-1990 onwards, one republic after another began to demand and consolidate its independence, and was sucked into the maelstrom of war: Slovenia first of all, followed by Croatia, and then Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) is a special case.

Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Management Gordon N. Bardos Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 ©2013 Gordon N. Bardos All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Managements Gordon N. Bardos For at least the past two hundred years, ethnoconfessional nationalism has been the most powerful ideology and force shaping political and social developments in southeastern Europe. This dissertation argues that Balkan ethnoconfessional nationalism is such an important element in southeastern Europe because it is a collective, chronic and non-economic phenomenon which transcends other political ideologies, generations, or socio-economic classes. As such, conventional Marxist-based approaches to understanding the phenomenon of nationalism, and their intellectual descendants such as the more materially-based forms of social constructivism and instrumentalism, consistently fail to both understand and predict its appeal and success in southeastern Europe. The dissertation concludes by arguing that there are severe limitations to the extent to which outsiders can manage the outcome of ethnoconfessional conflicts; hence, in terms of policy prescriptions, the analysis provided in this dissertation argues for a cautious and modest understanding of the extent to which intervention by the international community can transform Balkans
