Town of Cary Comprehensive Transportation Pllan Chapter 6 – Introduction At the time of the 2001 Comprehensive Transportation Plan, the Town of Cary had no bus service other than Route 301 operated by the Triangle Transit Authority (TTA). Since then, Cary has expanded its transit Transit services considerably, with a new local fixed-route service for the public and demand-responsive paratransit for seniors and persons with disabilities. TTA has added routes as well. As the Town’s Element population continues rising and travel demand increases, the Town plans to expand its local service, capturing riders coming from and going to planned residential and commercial developments. Situated amidst the Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, Cary is served today by multiple transit providers. Fixed route bus services within Cary are provided by C-Tran and TTA. C-Tran, Wake Coordinated Transportation Services (WCTS), and the Center for Volunteer Caregiving provide demand-responsive paratransit services. WCTS also provides rural general public transit via its TRACS service program; however, services are not provided for urban trips within Cary. Amtrak operates daily train service. This chapter describes current fixed-route transit and paratransit conditions, projected growth in the Town, and proposed future service changes. C-Tran Overview C-Tran is the Town of Cary’s sponsored transit service which originated as a door-to-door service for seniors and disabled residents in 2001. The Suzhou National High-tech District tram was investigated as a J6 case study. Two key findings are highlighted. Firstly, the new tramway was routed along the “path of least resis- P2 tance”–avoiding dense urban areas, to reduce conflict with cars. Secondly, regarding urban transport integration, R3 four perspectives were evaluated, namely planning and design, service operation, transport governance and user R4 experience. Findings show insufficient integration in the following aspects, namely tram and bus routes and services, O2 fares on multi-modal journeys, tram station distribution, service intervals, and luggage auxiliary support. Comprehensive Review of the 2019 Blessing of the Fleet By Richard Lord, MPA, BOF Chairman 2015-2018 October 21, 2019 (Updated 11/21/19) Introduction I was thrilled there was a 2019 Blessing of the Fleet (BOF). However, I was not pleased with the overall event. The live band music was the highlight of the BOF, but it was so sparse overall of just a few evening hours of a 16 hr. two dayslong event, that the lack of afternoon live band music was the major factor for the dissatisfaction and disappointment in the BOF. This, and other significant programmatic and structural deficiencies, represented a steep decline in the quality of the event from the excellence of the 2018 BOF and those that proceeded it. This Review is not to denigrate the 2019 BOF and its organizers. As the former Chairman from 2015-2018, I fully appreciate the considerable time and effort that went into the production of the 2019 BOF by its now five new Chairmen, and to their great credit as BOF novices, I am surprised it only took the five of them to replace me. Rather, if there is to be a 2020 BOF, I seek to be instructive to restore the BOF to its former state of distinction. As Chairman of the BOF for the last four years, no one knows the production and management challenges better than I. Further, no one knows better how to promote and manage this fine event. Thus, this Review is to provide guidance to the 2020 BOF organizers enabling them to return the event to its outstanding 2018 single-day Saturday production framework and programming constructing a BOF well worth attending and continuing. -
