Hankyoreh Media Group was born of the public’s aspiration for democracy following June 1987 Democratic Uprising. Reporters fired from the Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo newspapers in 1975 during the authoritarian period began the process of establishing a new newspaper from the ground up. On October 30, 1987, 3,342 conscientious citizens held a convention of initiators to announce the establishment of within and outside of South Korea. Following the convention, 70 thousand citizens committed to providing funding for the new newspaper. Finally on May 15, 1988, , the first newspaper to be funded solely by individual citizen shareholders, sent its first issue to the printing press.
