The outer barrier reef is punctuated with idyllic sandspits dotted with coconut palms. The high islands in the central lagoon rise into the blue Micronesian skies. The word “Chuuk” means “high mountains” in the Chuukese language. Chuuk State, which is one of four states in the Federated States of Micronesia, consists of 290 islands with 250 islands uninhabited. The islands have natural beauty and most still display a traditional lifestyle. The main population area is within the vast Chuuk Lagoon (sometimes called Truk Lagoon) where the vestiges of WWII attract divers from around the world. The huge inner lagoon is famously known for the “World’s Greatest Wreck Diving.” The islands were heavily attacked by the US in the Second World War then bypassed and blockaded by the Allies. The sunken hulls of Japanese ships remain along with ruined weapons and fortifications on land. Many divers feel it has the best collection of shipwrecks and WWII era airplanes in the world. The hulks have been transformed into amazing “shipreefs”, holding the very best of the undersea world and maritime history at one site. Incredible corals in a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes fed by warm, clear waters attract divers worldwide. The reefs also are home to a great variety of fish and corals. Visitors can see the islands and there are many “picnic islands” that are great for day trips and relaxing. -

Today in stark contrast, an entire fleet, which aided that destruction lies silently on the bottom of the lagoon-.After almost 70 years these vessels remain a museum to that conflict-but have been reborn-brought back to life by mother nature. I first visited these wrecks back in the early 80’s-about the same time as my adventures began in Egypt. But these wrecks are a beacon to the rest of the world in terms of conservation. In those 35 years I have seen little change in the Truk wrecks save some damage caused by livaboard vessels. Indeed the coral and fish life seems to get better as time goes on. Those responsible in Egypt should take note! The wrecks are all very well documented and this publication is a mere introduction to the wrecks and is intended as an introduction for those thinking of visiting Truk-I have selected a handful of my favourites-after 8 visits that list is growing! Investigation of Abandoned WW II Wrecks in Palau Tomo Ishimura1 Abstract Over forty Japanese vessels were sunken in the water of Palau during WWII. Some wrecks sunk in the shallow water at a depth of 20 meters or less and were salvaged. Other wrecks at 30 meters depth or more still remain and are legally protected by the authority of Palau Government but are seriously threatened by illegal treasure hunters. Initial efforts to identify human remains of Japanese soldiers were made in 2005. As part of an archaeology advisory team for the Japanese Government I carried out underwater surveys of sunken WWII vessels in Palau. In 2010 and 2011, I conducted investigations of the WWII vessels again, together with on-shore research on sites and features associated with the Japanese occupation period, funded by the Takanashi Foundation for Arts and Archaeology (Japan). The research revealed that the most of the vessels sunken in Palau were not genuine military vessels of Japanese Imperial Navy or Army but converted vessels originally built for non-combat purposes. These vessels were slow in speed and not well-equipped for combat activity. Most of them were destroyed by American aerial bombing on March 30th 1944. The evening before (March 29th) the main force of the Japanese Combined Fleet, including its flagship Musashi, retreated from Palau. It is clear that the vessels left in Palau were abandoned as a “third wheel” of the Combined Fleet. These abandoned-converted vessels include cargo carriers, tankers, whaling boats and fishing boats. This implies that Japanese troops were experiencing a difficult and desperate campaign at that time. -

Empire of the Sun (EoTS) Monograph on U.S. Air Operations versus Japanese Fleet Bases: Truk example By Mark Herman Introduction: Pacific War strategy for both sides was driven by the need to support operations with land based air power and mobile fleets. One of the key decisions that a player in EoTS constantly considers is how to use his military infrastructure (airfields and ports) to support his ability to generate combat power with his air and naval assets. Part and parcel to deployment decisions are how do the opponent’s forces impact those decisions? The game captures the impact of land based air through various systems, most notably how air units are based to project zones of influence (ZOIs) and their effect on movement and intelligence. A corollary to the importance of air forces was where to position the respective fleets to support those operations. What is harder to depict are the second order effects of air on military operations. It is easy to capture the kinetic abilities of air forces (e.g., bomb results), but the ability to show the non-kinetic effects of air power on enemy decisions has tended to be elusive if not omitted in their entirety. During World War II the ability to operate a port within range of enemy airfields has been expensive in terms of lost assets, while having a profound impact on operations tempo. A good example of this phenomena in the European theater was the siege of Malta. In this case the Allies chose to bear the cost of defending the island from an aerial siege, but while doing so, Malta’s ability to react to enemy operations was severely curtailed. -

MacLeod * Western Australian Museum, Fremantle Museums and Collections, Western Australian Maritime Museum, Fremantle, WA, Australia This paper is based on a series of measurements taken on WWII historic shipwrecks that resulted from the effects of Operation Hailstone in February 1944 on the Japanese merchant fleet which was assembled in Chuuk lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia. More than 65 shipwrecks and 250 aircraft were sunk during two main bombing raids. The vessels lost covered a wide range of underwater orientation and water depths and so provided a perfect suite of corrosion experiments. Since the fuel on board the aircraft was either readily burnt at the time or was lost through volatilization, the wrecked planes present no pollution problems today.
