The outer barrier reef is punctuated with idyllic sandspits dotted with coconut palms. The high islands in the central lagoon rise into the blue Micronesian skies. The word “Chuuk” means “high mountains” in the Chuukese language. Chuuk State, which is one of four states in the Federated States of Micronesia, consists of 290 islands with 250 islands uninhabited. The islands have natural beauty and most still display a traditional lifestyle. The main population area is within the vast Chuuk Lagoon (sometimes called Truk Lagoon) where the vestiges of WWII attract divers from around the world. The huge inner lagoon is famously known for the “World’s Greatest Wreck Diving.” The islands were heavily attacked by the US in the Second World War then bypassed and blockaded by the Allies. The sunken hulls of Japanese ships remain along with ruined weapons and fortifications on land. Many divers feel it has the best collection of shipwrecks and WWII era airplanes in the world. The hulks have been transformed into amazing “shipreefs”, holding the very best of the undersea world and maritime history at one site. Incredible corals in a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes fed by warm, clear waters attract divers worldwide. The reefs also are home to a great variety of fish and corals. Visitors can see the islands and there are many “picnic islands” that are great for day trips and relaxing. -

Central to this survey is the concept of that rogue bandit, the pirate, who Stevenson immortalized through his characterization of Long John Silver. Equally important is the notion of treasure, both material and philosophical. The impetus for this effort is derived from an increasingly narrowed middle school English curriculum which advocates the reading of literature, and novels in particular, as a secondary line of study. This back seat relegation serves two major purposes in the English classroom: the compilation of cumulative book report records and a source for multicolored checklists that are hung in just about every middle school English classroom except my own. Clearly, the appreciation of novels and the exploration of critical themes inherent within such works by students prior to entering high school can only serve to enhance the impact of curricular reading at the more advanced levels of education. The choice of an author and a sampling of his work over several authors and their work was not a particularly difficult decision to make. -

Papua New Guinea's Emergent Longline Fishery
Papua New Guinea's emergent longline fishery Two Hawaii-based fishing vessels are currently participating in the longline fishery in Papua New Guinea (PNG), in the south west tropical Pacific. The two vessels, which fish in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands for lobsters are on charter in PNG between lobster fishing seasons. PNG is one of the largest Pacific nations, straddling Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with one of the largest EEZs in the region and abundant tuna resources. Like the rest of the Pacific, PNG is keen to expand its longline fishing industry for the lucrative fresh tuna market in Japan. Fishing trials in 1994 and 1995 in Rabaul, Finchaven and the capital city, Port Moresby, demonstrated the feasibility of a domestic fishery in PNG; although the productivity of the resource was evident from the long history of fishing in PNG waters by Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese longliners. From 1994 onwards various local companies began to establish fishing operations at various ports throughout the country, but with most activity centered around Port Moresby. A longline fishery management plan was developed by the National Fisheries Authority in 1995, which included a ban on foreign longliners operating in the PNG EEZ. Licensing guidelines were also introduced which included a minimum of 51% PNG equity in joint ventures, and short-term charter of foreign vessels to PNG companies on a 1:1 basis with the number of local vessels in a company fleet. Presently there are 20 longliners operating in PNG, with the majority of vessels being based in Port Moresby. Fishing companies outside of the capital include one in Alotau and the two others in PNG=s second city Lae. -

Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties. -

This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area.
