Clue # 1 Did you know? The Trojan War, in Greek Mythology, was a conflict between the city of . Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks)in 1587 and Mycenaean Greece. Setting Troy was an ancient city on the coast of Turkey surrounded by a high wall with gates. The wall was a line of defense for the Trojans. Warriors would stand on top of the wall. They shot arrows at people who were trying to break into the city. Meanwhile, the Greek city-state of Sparta was across the Aegean Sea. Greeks had been trying to enter Troy for about ten years. The Greeks had no luck getting into Troy. The Trojans couldn’t get rid of the Greeks, though. History Thetis (goddess of water) married Peleus (king of Phthia). Zeus (god of thunder and lightning) had a big feast to celebrate. Olympian gods were all invited to the celebration, except Eris, goddess of strife. She threw a golden apple into the crowd as her wedding gift. The apple said “for the fairest.” Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera fought over the apple. Zeus decided to have the prince of Troy determine who was the fairest. The apple would then be hers. The goddesses went to Troy to try to bribe the prince. Paris, prince of Troy, chose Aphrodite. Aphrodite offered the most beautiful woman in the world to be his wife. She chose Helen, queen of Sparta. So, the prince of Troy kidnapped Helen. Now, Menelaus, king

Achilles – Hero of the Trojan War Achilles was the son of Thetis (sea nymph) and Peleus (king of Myrmidons). Achilles was a half-god, which meant he was mortal, could die, and could be killed. To protect Achilles, Thetis held him by his heel and dipped him into the River Styx. By dipping him in this river with special powers, Achilles was invincible everywhere, except his heel. The Trojan War Begins Paris, prince of Troy, kidnapped Helen. Menelaus and his brother Agamemnon set out to bring her home. Agamemnon enlisted the help of Odysseus, Ajax, Nestor, and Achilles. Achilles recruited the powerful soldiers, the Myrmidons. The war lasted a decade. Achilles managed to kill many Trojan warriors. Greek gods helped both the Greeks and the Trojans. During the war, Achilles captured and then fell in love with a princess named Briseis. Agamemnon was upset, so he kidnapped her. Achilles then refused to fight in the Trojan War. The Greeks started losing. Troy’s leading warrior Hector (Paris’ brother) was unstoppable. At this time, Achilles’ best friend Patroclus wore Achilles’ armor and returned to battle.
