Myth Made Fact Lesson 8: Jason with Dr. Louis Markos Outline: Jason Jason was a foundling, who was a royal child who grew up as a peasant. Jason was son of Eason. Eason was king until Pelias threw him into exile, also sending Jason away. When he came of age he decided to go to fulfill his destiny. On his way to the palace he helped an old man cross a river. When Jason arrived he came with only one sandal, as the other had been ripped off in the river. Pelias had been warned, “Beware the man with one sandal.” Pelias challenges Jason to go and bring back the Golden Fleece. About a generation or so earlier there had been a cruel king who tried to gain favor with the gods by sacrificing a boy and a girl. o Before he could do it, the gods sent a rescue mission. They sent a golden ram with a golden fleece that could fly. The ram flew Phrixos and Helle away. o The ram came to Colchis, in the southeast corner of the Black Sea. Helle slipped and fell and drowned in the Hellespont, which means Helle’s bridge (between Europe and Asia). o Phrixos sacrificed the ram and gave the fleece as a gift to the people of Colchis, to King Aeetes. o The Golden Fleece gives King Aeetes power. Jason builds the Argo. The Argonauts are the sailors of the Argo. Jason and the Argonauts go on the journey to get the Golden Fleece. Many of the Argonauts are the fathers of the soldiers of the Trojan War. -

Briggs, Jr N 1898 Charles Eliot Norton, the nation's foremost champion of I Dante and a leading Northern literary critic who influenced a host of literary figures from Henry James to T. s. Eliot,l wrote to Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve, the nation's most visible representative of German philological training and a man of considerable critical ability. Named emeritus at Harvard in November 1897, with his duties confined to teaching a small class in Dante, Norton was depressed at the thought of retirement,2 and sought the advice of his Southern near-contemporary on the Greek view of the ages of man and its accompanying virtues, as described in Pindar Nemean 3.70-75. Gil dersleeve's answer, one of his rare letters on purely philological matters, gives considerable insight into his critical method. The poem in question is a hymn on the victory in the pancration by Aristocleides, an Aeginetan. It opens with a picture of the youths standing on the banks of the Asopus waiting for the Muse to arrive with their victory song (1-8). The Muse is to sing of Aegina, which the victor has ennobled by a triumph worthy of the Myrmidons, and he has thus figuratively passed the pillars of Heracles (9-26). The mention of Heracles leads Pindar to digress on the Aeacids, Peleus, Telamon (31-42), and the young Achilles (43-63). -

The Supernatural World of the Kawaiisu by Maurice Zigmond1 The most obvious characteristic at the supernatural world of the Kawaiisu is its complexity, which stands in striking contrast to the “simplicity” of the mundane world. Situated on and around the southern end of the Sierra Nevada mountains in south - - central California, the tribe is marginal to both the Great Basin and California culture areas and would probably have been susceptible to the opprobrious nineteenth century term, ‘Diggers’ Yet, if its material culture could be described as “primitive,” ideas about the realm of the unseen were intricate and, in a sense, sophisticated. For the Kawaiisu the invisible domain is tilled with identifiable beings and anonymous non-beings, with people who are half spirits, with mythical giant creatures and great sky images, with “men” and “animals” who are localized in association with natural formations, with dreams, visions, omens, and signs. There is a land of the dead known to have been visited by a few living individuals, and a netherworld which is apparently the abode of the spirits of animals - - at least of some animals animals - - and visited by a man seeking a cure. Depending upon one’s definition, there are apparently four types of shamanism - - and a questionable fifth. In recording this maze of supernatural phenomena over a period of years, one ought not be surprised to find the data both inconsistent and contradictory. By their very nature happenings governed by extraterrestrial fortes cannot be portrayed in clear and precise terms. To those involved, however, the situation presents no problem. Since anything may occur in the unseen world which surrounds us, an attempt at logical explanation is irrelevant. -

Posted by Mark Seifert March 19, 2014 0 Comments Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email Reddit [The Manhattan Projects #18 has been out for a couple weeks, but still — if you haven’t read this issue and plan to, you might want to skip this post for now.] Several years into the digital era for both comics reading and comics production, I still love to look at original comic art up close. The look and feel of the art board, the subtle texture of the ink, the faint traces of changes and corrections… it all adds up to a little extra insight into the time and circumstances behind the comics book’s creation. We’ve mentioned a bunch of noteworthy original art sales here in recent times — from that awe-inspiring Golden Age Action Comics #15 cover by Fred Guardineer, to this Silver Age Fantastic Four #55 page by Jack Kirby, to this Bronze Age classic Amazing Spider- Man #121 cover by John Romita Sr, down to the current record holder for a piece of American comic book art with this Amazing Spider-Man #328 cover by Todd McFarlane. And increasingly, original art sales from much more recent comics are turning heads as well. It’s probably no surprise that Skottie Young original art is highly sought after, or that Walking Dead original art — even panel pages — can command some eye- popping prices. But modern comic art collectors have broadened their interests to many other artists and titles of quality in recent times, such as this Pia Guerra Y: The Last Man panel page that recently went for $1000. -

Shapiro HE AMAZONS offer a remarkable example of the lacunose and T fragmented state of ancient evidence for many Greek myths. For while we hear virtually nothing about them in extant litera ture before the mid-fifth century, they are depicted in art starting in the late eighth! and are extremely popular, especially in Attica, from the first half of the sixth. Thus all we know about the Greeks' con ception of the Amazons in the archaic period comes from visual rep resentations, not from written sources, and it would be hazardous to assume that various 'facts' and details supplied by later writers were familiar to the sixth-century Greek. The problem of locating the Amazons is a good case in point. Most scholars assume that Herakles' battle with the Amazons, so popular on Attic vases, took place at the Amazon city Themiskyra in Asia Minor, on the river Thermodon near the Black Sea, where most ancient writers place it.2 But the earliest of these is Apollodoros (2.5.9), and, as I shall argue, alternate traditions locating the Ama zons elsewhere may have been known to the archaic vase-painter and viewer. An encounter with Amazons figures among the exploits of three important Greek heroes, and each story entered the Attic vase painters' repertoire at a different time in the course of the sixth century. First came Herakles' battle to obtain the girdle of Hippolyte (although the prize itself is never shown), his ninth labor. -

Inconsistencies in Characters’ Speeches in Apollonius’ Argonautica This paper argues that a number of challenging cruces in Apollonian scholarship can be solved by applying the ancient literary-critical principle of λύσις ἐκ τοῦ προσώπου, or “solution from the character speaking,” known from the ancient Homeric scholiasts and commentators like Porphyry, who gives us this term (ad Il. 3.122, 14.434). This principle holds that inconsistencies arising in a character’s speech may owe not to an oversight on the part of the poet but rather to that character’s point of view or deceptive motives (Dachs 1913, de Jong 2001: xiv, O’Hara 2007: 11). James O’Hara has put this insight to good use in his study of inconsistencies in Roman epic, arguing, for instance, that certain incongruities in the Lycaon episode of Ovid’s Metamorphoses put Jupiter’s reliability as an internal narrator in doubt (O’Hara 2007: 116–118). It is my contention that this type of analysis may be fruitfully applied to Hellenistic epic as well, whence, indeed, Latin poets may have partly derived the technique of characterization through inconsistency. Some problems in Apollonius have already benefitted from this approach; one example is the idea that Pelias invents the religious justification of the quest for the fleece as a pretext for Jason’s suicide mission (see especially Pietsch 1999: 28–49). Malcolm Campbell has noted the applicability of this explanation to a variety of cruces (see Campbell 1971: 416), but has not argued the point at any length, and for other vexed passages, this solution has yet to be proposed. -

ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. As a result, Menelaus drew the lucky straw, while Odysseus married Penelope. ● Helen was abducted by Prince Paris of Troy, so all suitors were summoned to help Menelaus in his quest to bring her back. ● After the Greeks reached Troy and the war started, Odysseus played a particularly influential role as an advisor. He maintained the morale of the Greeks in a high level and managed to keep everyone sane. Odysseus (continued) ● Odysseus was most famous in the war for his contribution to create the Trojan Horse, a huge wooden horse that was supposed to be a gift to the Trojans by the retreating Greeks. The Trojans accepted the gift joyfully and started celebrating around it. When the night fell and everyone was drunk, the Greek warriors, who had hidden in the hollow body of the horse, revealed themselves and slew the Trojans, winning the war. Hercules ● Heracles (or Hercules) is best known as the strongest of all mortals, and even stronger than many gods. ● He was the last mortal son of Zeus, and the only man born of a mortal woman to become a god upon his death. ● Terrible things happened to him because of Hera's hatred, a hatred that he was not responsible for.
