Press Kit – Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà Angèle Dubeau, O.C., C.Q., O.M., DFA Biography One of the most prominent violin virtuosos of her generation, Angèle Dubeau has been leading an exceptional career for over 40 years in the great concert halls of the world. While her virtuosity and musicality have seduced critics, the public has adopted Angèle Dubeau for her captivating music, her uncommon gift as a communicator, her generosity and her outstanding ability to connect with her audience. She has garnered many awards over the years, and she is one of the rare classical violinists in the world to have been awarded gold records. She has sold over 600,000 albums in her career and the works from the violinist’s discography have been streamed over 80 million times across more than 100 countries. Angèle Dubeau’s musical trajectory remains unequalled. At the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, she obtained a Premier Prix in violin at age 15, studying with Raymond Dessaints (Master’s Degree in Music), and a Premier Prix in Chamber Music at age 16. She then moved to New York to work with Dorothy DeLay at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music and, from 1981 to 1984, she studied in Romania with the eminent pedagogue Stefan Gheorghiu. She has won several national and international competitions. Convinced of the need to introduce classical music to a wider audience, Angèle Dubeau has been a pioneer in programming and hosting gala concerts and weekly music television shows such as the famous Radio- Canada show “Faites vos gammes”.

Press Kit – Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà Angèle Dubeau, O.C., C.Q., O.M., DFA Biography Angèle Dubeau has pursued a career as a classical musician for over 40 years and has played in as many countries, always with the same passion, zest and generosity. Beyond her virtuosity as a musician, this exceptional woman has other qualities that have earned her a special place in the hearts of her public. From the very first notes she plays on the Stradivarius she calls Arthur, the audience is won over by her captivating playing and her gift for sharing her passion for music. As a citizen, musician, artistic director and communicator, Angèle Dubeau has left her mark on Quebec society through her continuing involvement, her artistic reach, and her ability to weave long-lasting links with the public. Angèle Dubeau was introduced to the violin at a very early age, giving her first concert at the age of 5, and entering the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal at the age of 8. "As far back as I can remember, music has been part of my life," she says. "When I was very young, I realized that music, through its grandeur and its strength, could reach out across the language barrier and touch people from all cultures." At the age of 15, she was awarded First Prize with honours at the Conservatoire (the equivalent of a master’s degree) and after winning other grants and distinctions, she continued her studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, before going to Romania to perfect her art.

  • The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014
The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014 by Min-Jeong Koh A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Min-Jeong Koh 2014 The Proliferation of String Quartets in Canada 1991-2014 Min-Jeong Koh Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This paper examines the proliferation of string quartets in Canada between 1991 and 2014. The year 1991 is a pivotal one: it was the end of a Golden Age of string quartet performance in Canada with the conclusion of the activities of the Orford, Vághy, and Purcell Quartets. It marked, also, the beginning of a New Golden Age of string quartet performance in Canada. Similar to their predecessors, the quartets of this new era have different levels of international success, but one could call it a New Golden Age from the sheer number of professional ensembles active in Canada from 1991 onward. The thesis begins with biographies of leading ensembles of this period: the Alcan, Arthur Leblanc, Claudel-Canimex, St. Lawrence, Lafayette, Penderecki, Molinari, Bozzini, Borealis, Tokai, Silverbirch, Cecilia, Afiara, and the New Orford Quartets. The fourth chapter researches the opportunities available to string quartets in Canada, including the Banff International String Quartet Competition. To supplement the biographies and to gain additional insight on the available resources, eight quartet players participated in interviews. Findings emphasize the need to create more support for Canadian musicians, including both professional ensembles and also young aspiring quartet ensembles, to stay in Canada.

  • Providing the Taste of Learning: Nadia Boulanger's Lasting Imprint on Canadian Music
PROVIDING THE TASTE OF LEARNING: NADIA BOULANGER’S LASTING IMPRINT ON CANADIAN MUSIC Jean Boivin According to music critic and musicologist Gilles Potvin, Nadia Boulanger’s gift to Canadian music is exceptional. From 1920 to her death in 1979, she taught more Canadians than any other foreign teacher. Potvin supports his claim by naming more than forty musicians, belonging to three different gen- erations and well known in various circles (Potvin 1993a, 1276–77). My own research has led me to identify some seventy former students of Boulanger, either born or having extensively worked in Canada (see appendix for a list of more than sixty of them). Canadians were present in Boulanger’s life from the early 1920s—that is, at the same time as her first American students1—until the very end of her teach- ing career in the late 1970s. It is all the more surprising that no serious study on this interesting subject has been published.
