    A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom.

I hope you will all be able to take some time to enjoy the pleasant weather and spend quality time with your families enjoying the amenities here in Qatar. We have enjoyed a very busy and much more ‘normal’ term since January. Our first set of IAL exams yielded some excellent results, our CIS Accreditation visit also yielded some excellent outcomes and we have seen a return of more of our school engagement activities, such as book days, photo competition, individual and class success in local and national mathematics competitions, the re-start of outdoor PE lessons, investigation activities, Mini-Olympics, school photographs, the launch of Orbital’s Virtual A-level programme, inter-house competitions, achieved ‘outstanding’ in the world-wide mathematics ratings from PISA, and our wonderful COVID Reflections video. We are getting back on track now and I am confident that in August we will see a return to more ‘normalised’ school activities. There are several reasons to be optimistic about the weeks and months ahead, not least the COVID vaccination programme underway in Qatar. School staff and contractors working in schools were prioritised by the government, alongside health & medical workers and the various armed & security forces. This is making our schools even safer than previously and we will be continuing with all our COVID health precautions in addition to the vaccine requirements. Our Year 12 students are also now being offered the opportunity to receive the vaccine, which shows great commitment from the MoEHE to extend this level of protection to the over-16 age group in Qatar.

    Joseph Rouleau (1929-2019) Joseph Rouleau, world-renowned operatic bass, 2004 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award laureate and 2014 Mentorship Program mentor passed away on July 12. Mr. Rouleau was a visionary in the world of opera. He performed on the world’s most prestigious stages. Throughout his lifetime he remained committed to teaching and mentoring youth starting out in the opera world. Mr. Rouleau was born in Matane, Quebec. He honed his voice while studying under many notable Canadian and Italian singers. In 1956 Mr. Rouleau joined the Royal Opera House in London where he took part in 850 performances. He rose to international fame and performed with Pavarotti, Domingo, and Maria Callas, to name a few. His notable roles include parts in Don Carlos , The Barber of Seville and Faust . Mr. Rouleau supported many causes that were close to his heart. He was president of the board of directors of Jeunesses Musicales du Canada. He was instrumental to Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal and the Opéra de Montréal, and to the establishment of the Centre Pierre-Péladeau. Mr. Rouleau taught voice at Université du Québec à Montréal for 18 years. Since receiving a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2004, Mr. Rouleau’s support of the Awards never wavered. He and his wife Renée attended the GGPAA Gala, laureate announcement and related receptions as often as possible. In 2014 Mr. Rouleau mentored tenor Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure. In their Legacy Interview with then GGPAA Foundation co-chair Paul- André Fortier, Mr. Rouleau spoke of how honoured he was when given the opportunity to mentor a young artist.
