  • Eloquence Releases: Summer 2017 by Brian Wilson
Some Recent Eloquence Releases: Summer 2017 by Brian Wilson The original European Universal Eloquence label replaced budget releases on DG (Privilege or Resonance), Decca (Weekend Classics) and Philips (Classical Favourites). Like them it originally sold for around £5 and offered some splendid bargains such as Telemann’s ‘Water Music’ and excerpts from Tafelmusik (Musica Antiqua Köln/Reinhard Goebel 4696642) and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (Janet Baker, James King, Concertgebouw/Bernard Haitink 4681822). Later most of the original batch were deleted – luckily the Mahler remains available – and production switched to Universal Australia but the price remained around the same. More recently changes in the value of the £ mean that single CDs now sell for around £7.75 but the high quality of much of the repertoire means that they remain well worth keeping an eye on. Many, but not all, of the albums are available to stream or download and I have reviewed some in that form and others on CD. Be aware, however, that the downloads often cost more than the CDs and invariably come without notes – which is a shame because the Eloquence booklets are better than those of many budget labels. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? As Phil Sommerich points out in his excellent overview of “The 8 The Distribution Maze: Distribution Maze,” Part I and Part II, yes, there is a way, or rather, ways. But which Bring a Compass: Part II one is the right one? Sommerich lets us in on a few of the major players, explains 11 Five Minutes, Five Questions how they each work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. with Three Top Label Execs In “The Musical America Recording Surveys,” we confirmed that our readers are both consumers and makers of recordings.

Press Kit – Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà Angèle Dubeau, O.C., C.Q., O.M., DFA Biography One of the most prominent violin virtuosos of her generation, Angèle Dubeau has been leading an exceptional career for over 40 years in the great concert halls of the world. While her virtuosity and musicality have seduced critics, the public has adopted Angèle Dubeau for her captivating music, her uncommon gift as a communicator, her generosity and her outstanding ability to connect with her audience. She has garnered many awards over the years, and she is one of the rare classical violinists in the world to have been awarded gold records. She has sold over 600,000 albums in her career and the works from the violinist’s discography have been streamed over 80 million times across more than 100 countries. Angèle Dubeau’s musical trajectory remains unequalled. At the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, she obtained a Premier Prix in violin at age 15, studying with Raymond Dessaints (Master’s Degree in Music), and a Premier Prix in Chamber Music at age 16. She then moved to New York to work with Dorothy DeLay at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music and, from 1981 to 1984, she studied in Romania with the eminent pedagogue Stefan Gheorghiu. She has won several national and international competitions. Convinced of the need to introduce classical music to a wider audience, Angèle Dubeau has been a pioneer in programming and hosting gala concerts and weekly music television shows such as the famous Radio- Canada show “Faites vos gammes”.

  • Incarnation Duo Concertante Nancy Dahn, Violin and Electric Violin Timothy Steeves, Piano
Incarnation Duo Concertante Nancy Dahn, violin and electric violin Timothy Steeves, piano Andrew Staniland 1. The River Is Within Us 14:06 Denis Gougeon Chants du Cœur 2. Chants du Cœur I 4:37 3. Chants du Cœur II 4:55 Alice Ping Yee Ho 4. Cœur à Cœur 13:27 Jocelyn Morlock 5. Petrichor 9:54 Chan Ka Nin 6. Incarnation 16:23 Total playing time: 63:22 Program Notes for Incarnation (for electric violin and piano) Incarnation was commissioned as a companion piece when the Duo was performing the complete violin and piano works by Schubert. The composer paid tribute to Schubert by echoing themes derived from works such as “Death and the Maiden,” Fantasy in C for violin and piano, and “Who Is Silvia.” This new work is titled Incarnation because in a way, it revives Schubert’s spirit. While Schubert’s melodies are famous, his accompaniments are equally memorable. For example, the opening piano figure in “Erlkönig” is an inspiring motive, and it appears in the final section of this work. In writing Incarnation, Chan Ka Nin tried to relive how Schubert composed, to rediscover his state of mind, and at the same time to rework his ideas in a contemporary context, as if Schubert’s spirit were travelling through modern times. The acoustic sound from the violin and piano represent Schubert’s world, and the modified electronic sounds act as the manifestation of his ideas in this century. The work is a commission by the Canada Council for the Arts and Toronto Arts Council for Duo Concertante.

  • An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Oboe Concertos
An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Oboe Concertos Document Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe in the Performance Studies Division of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music January 11, 2016 by Elizabeth E. Eccleston M02515809 B.M., Wilfrid Laurier University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2007 D.M.A. Candidacy: April 5, 2012 256 Major Street Toronto, Ontario M5S 2L6 Canada [email protected] ____________________________ Dr. Mark Ostoich, Advisor ____________________________ Dr. Glenn Price, Reader ____________________________ Professor Lee Fiser, Reader Copyright by Elizabeth E. Eccleston 2016 i Abstract: Post-World War II in Canada was a time during which major organizations were born to foster the need for a sense of Canadian cultural identity. The Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Music Centre led the initiative for commissioning, producing, and disseminating this Canadian musical legacy. Yet despite the wealth of repertoire created since then, the contemporary music of Canada is largely unknown both within and outside its borders. This annotated bibliography serves as a concise summary and evaluative resource into the breadth of concertos and solo works written for oboe, oboe d’amore, and English horn, accompanied by an ensemble. The document examines selected pieces of significance from the mid-twentieth century to present day. Entries discuss style and difficulty using the modified rating system developed by oboist Dr. Sarah J. Hamilton. In addition, details of duration, instrumentation, premiere/performance history, including dedications, commissions, program notes, reviews, publisher information and recordings are included wherever possible.
