Biography

Sony Classical artist and winner of the 2012 Juno Award, Alexandre Da Costa was born in , , . He showed an uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age. By the age of nine, he had the astonishing ability to perform his first concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments, which brought him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career as a violinist began very early and, after encouragement from , he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as well as in recital.

At age 18, he obtained a Master’s Degree in violin and a First Prize from the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec. Concurrently, he also obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Interpretation from the University of Montreal. Subsequently, encouraged to choose one instrument, he studied in at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia with a legendary violin teacher who became his mentor, Zakhar Bron (whose previous students famously include the likes of Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin). He later pursued post-graduate studies at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst of Vienna, Austria, with G. Schulz, C. Altenburger and R. Honeck, and is currently completing a research PhD. Among the many other prizes that followed were the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award from the for the Arts, and in 2003 the Council’s Musical Instrument Bank decided to go further and award him the “1689 Baumgartner Stradivarius”. In 2010, he received the prestigious Virginia-Parker Prize, one of Canada’s highest cultural distinctions.

Winner of many national and international first prizes, including the International Violin Competition Pablo Sarasate, Alexandre Da Costa has given close to two thousand concerts and recitals throughout the Americas, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. He has performed in the major halls of Vienna (Musikverein), Berlin (Philharmonie), New York (Carnegie Hall), Beijing (Poly-Theater) and beyond. He has played

and recorded as guest soloist with more than 100 different seller status, and was converted into a multimedia concert orchestras including ’s Royal Philharmonic, the Vienna, booked around the world. Berlin, Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, the Dresden, Bergen, Buffalo and Prague Philharmonic Orchestras, the BBC Alexandre Da Costa is Music Director of both the Acacia Concert Orchestra, the National Radio & Television Symphony of Ensemble (Canada) and the Indian Ocean Ensemble (Australia). Since 1998, Alexandre Da Costa has played numerous rare and valuable violins on short and long-term loans. Having also been appointed Musical Development Director of Canimex, Canada’s largest private collection of rare stringed instruments, for nearly a decade and evaluated during his tenure hundreds of famous and valuable rare violins made between the 16th and 19th century, he is now generally considered one of the few experts in this narrow field.

Rare violins Da Costa had the privilege of playing include those from makers such as Stradivari, Guarneri “Del Gesù”, Guadagnini, Montagnana, Amati, Gagliano, Vuillaume, Lupot, Rogeri, Goffriller, Tononi and many more.

Since 2017, Alexandre Da Costa is Head of Evaluations & Portfolio for Maegis Arts Rare Violins, a business unit of Maegis Arts that is engaged in the organization of rare violins private sales. It also offers collection building and development services to private, corporate and institutional investors seeking to diversify their holdings with rare violins offering medium and long-term capital appreciation opportunities.

Alexandre Da Costa invites you to Vienna to a unique concert program that includes most of the favorite Viennese repertoire by Strauss, Lehar and Kreisler, such as the Blue Danube and Emperor Waltzes, the Tritsch Tratsch Polka and the Radetzky March: A concert full of grace that will charm any audience. While living in Vienna, Alexandre recorded several albums with the best Viennese musicians and orchestras as guest soloist and leader. After living in Spain for more than a decade, Da España Costa felt the need to share his deep appreciation and knowledge of the Spanish 7 culture, particularly through the music of Albéniz, Falla, Granados and Sarasate, and the poetry of García Lorca. In addition to his activities as a performer, Alexandre Da Costa has been an active arts administrator, notably as artistic director of the Laurentians Classical Festival, one of the 5 most important classical music festivals in Canada (La Presse), with a history of nearly 20 years. Since 2013, he is responsible for inviting artists from all over the world for an annual celebration of Chamber Music and Symphonic concerts.

Da Costa is also the founder and artistic director of Acacia Classics, a JUNO-winning recording label and production company. Since its foundation in 2011, Acacia Classics has released dozens of Albums presenting artists and orchestras from America, Europe and Asia, and produced hundreds of concerts throughout North America.

Alexandre Da Costa also serves as an esteemed artistic consultant and spokesperson for entities such as Montreal’s Arsenal, the Orchestre de la Francophonie, the Acacia Ensemble and the Indian Ocean Ensemble.

Created in 2006, Maegis Arts is a dynamic division of Maegis Group. It was originally established for the purpose of producing international orchestral concert tours in China featuring solo violinist Alexandre Da Costa. Over a period of ten years, it co-produced a number of concert tours across China (totaling about 40 concerts) featuring solo violinist Alexandre Da Costa alongside different international orchestras.

In 2016, it was revamped to encompass a much wider range of products and services, as well as a much wider geographic area. It now aims to become a major provider of international cultural productions, advanced music education services, as well as rare violins in Asia. To that purpose, it was reorganized into three business units to better focus on The International Cultural Productions specific product offerings and market business unit aims at developing the segments, namely: an International Cultural sales of a broad scope of classical and contemporary music concerts Productions business unit, an Advanced Music and tours, international cultural public Education Services business unit, and a Rare events, as well as the licensing Violins business unit. of international TV content.
