Cologne Musikhochschule, Germany MAEGi S ARTS Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Spain 5 Alexandre Da Costa Biography Sony Classical artist and winner of the 2012 Juno Award, Alexandre Da Costa was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He showed an uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age. By the age of nine, he had the astonishing ability to perform his first concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments, which brought him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career as a violinist began very early and, after encouragement from Charles Dutoit, he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as well as in recital. At age 18, he obtained a Master’s Degree in violin and a First Prize from the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec. Concurrently, he also obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Interpretation from the University of Montreal. Subsequently, encouraged to choose one instrument, he studied in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia with a legendary violin teacher who became his mentor, Zakhar Bron (whose previous students famously include the likes of Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin). He later pursued post-graduate studies at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst of Vienna, Austria, with G. Schulz, C. Altenburger and R. Honeck, and is currently completing a research PhD. Among the many other prizes that followed were the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award from the Canada Council for the Arts, and in 2003 the Council’s Musical Instrument Bank decided to go further and award him the “1689 Baumgartner Stradivarius”. In 2010, he received the prestigious Virginia-Parker Prize, one of Canada’s highest cultural distinctions. Winner of many national and international first prizes, including the International Violin Competition Pablo Sarasate, Alexandre Da Costa has given close to two thousand concerts and recitals throughout the Americas, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. He has performed in the major halls of Vienna (Musikverein), Berlin (Philharmonie), New York (Carnegie Hall), Beijing (Poly-Theater) and beyond. He has played 6 and recorded as guest soloist with more than 100 different seller status, and was converted into a multimedia concert orchestras including London’s Royal Philharmonic, the Vienna, booked around the world. Berlin, Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, the Dresden, Bergen, Buffalo and Prague Philharmonic Orchestras, the BBC Alexandre Da Costa is Music Director of both the Acacia Concert Orchestra, the National Radio & Television Symphony of Ensemble (Canada) and the Indian Ocean Ensemble (Australia). Alexandre Da Costa is also active as a conservatories around the world. Institutions he visited include the chamber musician and recently has recorded the complete Sydney Conservatorium, the University of Toronto and the Superior Brahms sonatas, alongside pianist Wonny Song. Da Costa has Conservatories of Montreal, Madrid and Shanghai. He also served performed alongside acclaimed chamber musicians such as as benchmarking consultant for the Hong Kong Academy for Menahem Pressler, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Matt Haimowitz and Performing Arts, and guest speaker for TEDx. As Concertmaster, Hélène Mercier. he regularly leads orchestras such as the Wiener Symphoniker, the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Singapore As a recording artist, he has recorded 25 albums with various labels Symphony, under conductors such as Philippe Jordan, Tugan such as, Sony Classical, Warner Classics, JVC/Victor, Naxos, Acacia Sokhiev, Günter Herbig and Lorin Maazel. Portuguese composers Luis de Freitas Branco and Armando José Alexandre Da Costa plays a Stradivarius of 1701 on long-term Fernandes. In 2012, he won the JUNO award for “Classical Album loan by the “Château du Lac Sacacomie”. of the Year” for his recording of the concertos by American composer Michael Daugherty, with the Montreal Symphony under Pedro Halffter for Warner Classics. The Washington Post selected his recording of the Beethoven concerto with Klezmer cadenzas by A. Ichmouratov as CD of the Year. He now records for Spectra and Sony Classical. The composer of the fint great Romantic German opera, Der Freischutz, spent much of his childhood with the peripatetic theatre company directed by his father, Franz Anton Weber, uncle of Mozart's wife Constanze and, like his brother, Constanze's Father, at one time a member of the famous Mannheim orchestra. At the time of Weber's birth his father was still in the service of the Bishop of Lubeck and during the course of an extended visit to Vienna had taken a second wife, an actress and singer, who became an important member of the family theatre company established in 1788. Weber's musical gifts were fostered by his father, who saw in his youngest son the possibility of a second Mozart. Travel brought the chance of varied if inconsistent study, in Salzburg with Michael Haydn and elsewhere with musicians of lesser ability. His second opera was performed in Freiberg in 1800, followed by a third in Augsburg in 1803. Lessons with the Abbe Vogler led to a position as Kapellmeister in Breslau in 1804, brought to a premature end through the hostility of musicians long established in the city and through the accidental drinking of engraving acid, left by his father in a wine-bottle.

    GIOVANNI GUZZO, violin “Guzzo’s technique was immaculate, and his Szymanowski was also stylish and driven. He ripped through the cadenza with terrific verve and left me wanting to hear much more from him”. Andrew Morris, Classicalsource 30 year old violinist Giovanni Guzzo is rapidly rising as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. Born in Venezuela to parents of Italian and Venezuelan heritage, he has captivated audiences around the world with his unique and passionate approach to his performances. Following his sensational solo debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, critics described him as a “wonderfully magnetic” and “commanding” performer. Giovanni started his musical studies with the piano at the age of five and violin at the age of six. At the age of 12 he became the youngest violinist to win the National Violin Competition “Juan Bautista Plaza” in Venezuela. A protégé of the renowned French virtuoso violinist Maurice Hasson, Giovanni was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, from where he graduated with the highest honours. He previously studied with Zakhar Bron at the “Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia” in Madrid. A keen recitalist and chamber musician, Giovanni has worked closely with some of today’s leading musicians, including Martha Argerich, Joshua Bell, Martin Fröst, Daniel Hope, Stephen Hough, Kristóf Baráti, Mats Lidstrom, Gábor Takács-Nagy, István Várdai, the Takacs Quartet and Maxim Vengerov, to name but a few. His talent has been recognised with numerous awards including Her Majesty the Queen’s commendation for Excellence, Gold medal at Marlow Music Festival, PROMIS award given by the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Manoug Parikian and Myra Hess award.

He began piano lessons at the age of seven and continued with the study of harmony, counterpoint, analysis and composition as a teenager with Françoise Gangloff-Levéchin, Christian Manen and Louis Saguer. He then entered the Paris Conservatory where he studied with a number of composers including Claude Ballif, Marius Constant, Serge Nigg, and Michel Philippot. He attended the French Academy in Rome and after returning to Paris, he worked as head of chamber music for Radio France. He has since concentrated on composing. He has composed orchestral, chamber, instrumental, vocal and choral works. His unrecorded Symphonies are: Nos. 1, Op. 11 (1983-4), 2, Op. 22 (1986-8), 3, Op. 33 "Sinfonia da Requiem" (1988-94) and 5 , Op. 55 "Concerto for Orchestra" (1996-7).There is also a Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, Op. 72 (2001) and a Sinfonia Concertante for Orchestra, Op. 83a (1995-96/rév.2006) . Son ya 17 las ediciones que cumple una iniciativa que ha convertido la excelencia en su sello Ede garantía al servicio de la formación y la difusión musical. Del 1 al 27 de julio, las aulas del Conservatorio Jesús de Monasterio volverán a acoger a los grandes maestros del panorama internacional para ofrecer un intercambio único a los jóvenes talentos de las doce escuelas europeas más prestigiosas. Un encuentro entre la experiencia de grandísimos artistas consagrados y el entusiasmo y el potencial de las nuevas figuras llamadas a triunfar en los escenarios del futuro. Y junto a la academia, la difusión musical más allá de las aulas para acercar a los cántabros momentos inolvidables en medio centenar de conciertos que llegarán al Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, al Palacio de La Magdalena y la iglesia de Santa Lucía, en Santander, pero también a otra veintena de localidades cántabras, como Torrelavega, Comillas, Santillana del Mar o Laredo. Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Most numerous among the recordings of Bernard Greenhouse are those he made with the Beaux Arts Trio, the legendary ensemble of which he was the founding cellist in 1955 with pianist Menahem Pressler and violinist Daniel Guilet (later followed by violinist Isidore Cohen). With the Beaux Arts Trio, Greenhouse performed and recorded the entire standard piano trio repertoire before retiring from the group in 1987. However, Greenhouse’s career on the international chamber music stage represents only one dimension of his richly varied musical life. He was also a virtuoso cello soloist, a tireless musical collaborator, and the long-time cellist of New York’s Bach Aria Group. Nippon Music Foundation celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, and 10 years have passed since we started the “Acquisition and Loan of Stringed Instruments” program, one of the Foundation’s main pillars of activities. The Foundation has now come to own 18 Stradivarius and 2 Guarneri del Gesu, and as a custodian of the world cultural assets, maintains these precious instruments for future generations and loans them gratis to young promising musicians regardless of their nationalities. Stradivarius 1722 violin “Jupiter” has been on loan to Mr. Daishin Kashimoto since 1998. Based in Freiburg, Germany, Mr. Kashimoto is among the top young violinists of the world, and one of the most popular musicians in Japan. Besides his soloist activities, Mr. Kashimoto’s warm personalities have also encouraged other musicians to invite him as a member of many chamber music performances worldwide. Mr. Kashimoto is now in Japan for his recitals at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, and kindly agreed to perform for us tonight. He studied clarinet at the Kazan Music School, Kazan Music College and the Kazan Conservatory. He was appointed as associate clarinetist of the Tatarstan's Opera and Ballet Theatre, and of the Kazan State Symphony Orchestra. He toured extensively in Europe, then went to Canada where he settled permanently in 1998. He completed his musical education at the University of Montreal where he studied with Andre Moisan. He works as a conductor and Klezmer clarinetist and has composed a sizeable body of music.
