The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland’s only Natural Heritage site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Along with the Swedish High Coast, it is a member of a global community comprising 46 World Heritage Marine sites.

In the Kvarken Archipelago, land uplift is in- creasing the amount of land by one square kilometre each year, which is equivalent to more than 150 football fields. In 2,500 years, the shallow Kvarken threshold will create a natural land connection between Finland and Sweden. The landscape was shaped by the continental ice sheet, which covered large parts of Northern Europe and created a depression in the earth’s surface around one kilometre deep.

Vast expanses of stunning flatlands can be found throughout the province. The vast lowlands and green fields that have risen from the sea over time stretch out to meet a calm horizon in all directions.
