Jc1 Subject Combinations and Prerequisites (2020) TEMASEK JUNIOR COLLEGE JC1 SUBJECT COMBINATIONS AND PREREQUISITES (2020) GCE A-LEVEL CURRICULUM For more information, please visit this website: https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/pre-university/gce-a-level-curriculum 1 NORM COMBINATION OF SUBJECTS (3H2 + 1H1 CONTENT SUBJECTS) THE EXPANDED CURRICULUM (4H2 CONTENT SUBJECTS) Students may apply to offer 4H2 content subjects + GP + MTL + PW if they meet the criteria. Meant for students who have the ability and passion to extend their learning further. Students must be prepared to handle the increased academic workload and longer timetables in addition to the demands of the JC programme throughout their two-year course. Students who wish to offer the expanded curriculum must fulfil the following criteria: For JAE students: L1R5 aggregate ≤ 9 (raw score); For IP students: GPA ≥ 3.25; Science-stream students must have offered 2 Science subjects + 2 Mathematics subjects at the O-Levels / IP4. Students who wish to offer the expanded curriculum should also have offered at least 8 subjects at O-Levels/IP. Details and eligibility criteria on the various H3 programmes will be briefed in the second half of the JC1 year. H3 is offered for the following subjects in 2021: 1. Biology 2. Chemistry 3. Chinese Language and Literature (compulsory for CLEP students) 4. Economics 5. Geography 6. History 7. Literature in English 8. Mathematics 9. Music (compulsory for MEP students) 10. Physics Advisory To offer two H2 Humanities/Arts subjects, students should have a ‘B3’ or better for English and Humanities subjects at O-levels (B grade and better for Language Arts and Humanities subjects for IP students) To offer 2 H2 Science subjects, students should have offered at least two Pure Science subjects at O-levels. (Combined Science students should offer only 1 Science subject at H2 level) Students offering the norm combination (3H2 + 1H1 content subjects) should offer the H1 content subject as their contrasting subject. i.e. Arts stream students should offer H1 Math as their H1 subject; Science stream students should offer a H1 arts/humanities subject as their H1 subject. 10 NOTES 1 The number of units assigned to H1, H2, H3 subjects are as follows: LEVEL NO OF UNITS H1 1 H2 2 H3 1 2 The total number of units for a chosen subject combination can range from a minimum of 10 units to a maximum of 12 units, including MTL. If MTL is excluded, the number of units will range from 9 to 11. 3 Students are required to do a minimum of 3 H2 + 1 H1 + GP + PW + MTL. Students need not take the MTL examination if they have obtained a D7 or better in Higher MTL at the O-level as they would be deemed to have fulfilled the H1 MTL requirement. As MTL is an integral part of the ‘A’ level curriculum, H1 MTL cannot be replaced with another subject. 4 Project Work (PW) and General Paper (GP) are compulsory H1 subjects. 5 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) is a H2 subject which will replace GP if it is offered. JC1 KI students will offer 5H2 subjects (inclusive of KI) until the end of JC1 where the student will decide whether to keep KI and drop a H2 content subject totally or to drop KI and switch to GP and continue with the remaining content subjects. 6 All subject combinations must include 1 contrasting subject, taken at either H1 or H2 level. 7 The minimum enrolment of a particular subject combination should not be less than 15 students (with the exception of KI, Art and MEP); the college administration reserves the right not to start a class in such a situation. 8 H3 Subjects: Selection will be based on good academic results in the Promotional Examination. Students who wish to offer a particular subject at H3 level must have offered the same subject at H2 level. 11 9 The grading system for the 3 levels of study is as follows: H1 H2 H3 Subjects Subjects Subjects A A Distinction B B Merit C C Pass D D Ungraded E E S S Ungraded Ungraded ‘S’ and ‘Ungraded’ are grades below pass; ‘S’ is used to denote a sub-pass. 10 Music Elective Programme (MEP): MEP students have to offer H2 and H3 Music as examination subjects at A-Level.

Please refer to MOE’s website for information on the GCE A-level curriculum: The norm for most JC students is to offer three H2 content-based subjects + one H1 content- based subject + GP + MTL + PW. One of the four content-based subjects must be from a contrasting discipline; the contrasting subject can be a H1 or a H2 subject. Project Work (PW) and General Paper (GP) are compulsory H1 subjects.     PRESS RELEASE Ministry of Education EDUN N25-05-20 9 Sep 05 EMBARGOED UNTIL 12.00 PM, FRIDAY 9 Sep 2005 RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL TO OFFER THE INTEGRATED PROGRAMME IN 2006 1. Come Jan 2006, students will have an additional choice of Integrated Programme (IP) in secondary schools. River Valley High School (RVHS) will offer the IP in 2006, joining eight other schools/family of schools currently offering the IP. This was announced by Education Minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, during his visit to River Valley High School (RVHS) on 9 Sep 05. 2. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved the proposal by RVHS to offer a 6-year IP for its students. The IP will be available to its 2006 cohort of Sec 1 and 2 students from January. RVHS students will take the GCE ‘A’ Level examinations at the end of JC 2. The IP offered by RVHS will add further diversity to the current mix of schools offering the IP. 3. RVHS intends to provide an IP that focuses on both process and content, with the aim of nurturing critical thinking skills and providing opportunities for its students to engage in broader learning experiences. Its IP will also provide a range of programmes to develop talents in niche areas such as the arts and mathematics. 4. RVHS will be relocated to Jalan Boon Lay in a few years’ time, in new premises to be developed. The new premises are necessary to provide for the projected expansion in enrolment and full range of facilities it will need as a 6th form school.

    PRESS RELEASE 18 May 2011 DIRECT ADMISSION EXERCISES FOR JUNIOR COLLEGES AND POLYTECHNICS TO COMMENCE IN JUNE-JULY 2011 1. Students can apply for direct admission to junior colleges (JC) and polytechnics through the Direct School Admission - Junior College Exercise (DSA- JC) and the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) Exercise. The DSA-JC application period varies across the schools, with some starting from 18 May 2011. The DPA application period is from 8 July 2011 to 13 July 2011. Successful applicants will be offered places in a JC, institution or polytechnic prior to taking their GCE ‘O’ level examinations or equivalent assessments, though they must still meet the ‘O’ level examinations criteria for eventual admission to a JC, institution or polytechnic. Direct Admission Exercises 2. The direct admission exercises provide JCs, institutions and polytechnics with more flexibility to select students while upholding the key principles of transparency and meritocracy. 3. The DSA-JC Exercise provides students an opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission at the pre- university level. 4. The DPA Exercise allows students who are interested in and have the aptitude for applied learning to seek prior admission to the polytechnics. Successful DPA applicants will be able to participate in the Polytechnic Preparatory Programme (PPP), conducted by the individual polytechnics from mid-January 2012 to March 2012. Under the PPP, students will engage in activities such as industry visits, student camps and leadership development activities. These activities aim to broaden the students’ learning experience and better orientate them to the polytechnic environment.
