A UNITED TECHNOLOGIES COMPANY LET’S PARTY LIKE IT’S 2018! This year marks a number of anniversaries for groups that are important to WAI. While this is the 29th Annual Internati onal Women in Aviati on Conference, in 2019 we will be celebrati ng our 30th conference in Long Beach, California, March 14-16. Check out these other important milestones which all happen in 2018.

100 Years: Marine Corps was founded in 1775, but it wasn’t until 1918 that the fi rst woman Marine enlisted. Opha May Johnson was the fi rst known woman to enlist in the Marines. She joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1918, during America’s involvement in World War I, offi cially becoming the fi rst female Marine. From then until the end of World War I, 305 Opha May Johnson women enlisted in the Marines.

70 Years: United States Air Force Reserve was launched in 1948 when President Harry Truman called for its forma- tion. Since then, the Air Force Reserve has been a critical part of the nation’s defense. Its mission is to provide combat-ready forces to “Fly, Fight, and Win.” At this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Reserve Citizen Airmen will participate in Women- Venture, creating opportunities for all to meet and connect in an event designed to encourage and inspire the next genera- tion of women in aviation.

40 Years: ISA+21 stands for the International Society of Women Pilots which was ini- tially formed as a social club in 1978 by Beverly Bass () and Stephanie Wallach ( Airways) whose vision was to organize a meeting of the new women pilots who were Original ISA+21 being hired by various airlines. Their fi rst meeting was held at Circus Circus Hotel in . sponsored the luncheon for the 21 charter members who were in attendance at the fi rst ISA convention in May 1978.

40 Years: Professional Women Controllers has as its purpose to encourage women to en- ter the air traffi c control profession; assist in professional and personal development; maintain ac- countability, responsibility, and professionalism; and promote a better understanding, cooperation and coordination among individuals toward the continual improvement of aviation safety. PWC has sometimes held its annual meeting along with the WAI conference. PWC won’t be joining us this year, but they will be in 2019 in Long Beach. And Dr. Peggy Chabrian will speak at their 40th anniversary conference in Washington, DC, held from April 23-26, 2018.

25 Years: Women in Corporate Aviation is a group of aviation professionals, including fl ight de- partment personnel, FBO managers, writers, stu- dents, training center professionals, and many oth- ers. WCA held its fi rst meeting at the WAI conference in 1993 and has grown from that start to network, provide scholarships, and promote career opportunities in busi- ness aviation.

20 years: Aviation for Women magazine was launched at the 1998 WAI Conference and featured Patty Wagstaff on the fi rst cover and Carolyn Williamson as the magazine’s fi rst editor. Published six times annually, Aviation for Women mag- azine is a must-read among WAI’s 13,500 members around the world. Available in both print and digital formats, Aviation for Women features inspirational success stories of women who lead in the aviation industry, as well as professional development advice, aviation history pieces, and more. A subscription is included with WAI membership. So let’s raise a glass to all these milestone anniversaries along with all good wishes for many, many years of conti nued success.
