CITY PROMENADE LUXEMBOURG-CENTRE, OLD TOWN, FORTRESS WALLS AND BEST VIEWS 19 HISTORIC SURVEY In 963, the Count Siegfried of the Ardennes built his forti- fied castle on the Bock promontory, and it became the cradle of the city of Luxembourg. The first markets were held in front of Saint Michael’s Church, surrounded by a simple fortification. Across the centuries, a second and then a third wall were erected on the Western side, while the rocks of the Alzette and Pétrusse valleys served as a natural defence. Never- theless, these strong fortified structures did not prevent Burgundians from taking over the city in 1443, a city which beyond any doubt was to own a major strategic position on the European chessboard. For over four centuries, the best military engineers from Burgundy, Spain, France, Austria and the German Con- federation ended up turning it into one of the most forti- fied places on earth, the so-called “Gibraltar of the North”. The strength of its defence stemmed from its three forti- fied belts, the first of which was composed of bastions, the second of 15 forts and the third, being the outside wall, was composed of 9 forts, all of which were carved into the rock. An extraordinary 14.2 mile-network of underground galleries – the famous Casemates – and more than 1 2 3 4 5 7 40,000 square meters of bomb-shelters were lodged in the city’s rocks. They could shelter not only thousands of defenders, including their horses and equipment, but also artillery and weapon workshops, kitchens, bakeries, slaughterhouses, and so forth. -

N E W S R E L E A S E FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 13, 2018 Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin to Lead The Philadelphia Orchestra on 2018 Tour of Europe and Israel May 24-June 5, 2018 Tour marks only the second time the Fabulous Philadelphians have traveled to Israel and Nézet-Séguin’s debut there In partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Israel portion of tour commemorates the nation’s 70th anniversary Concerts bring the “Philadelphia Sound” to devoted fans in six European cities and three Israeli cities with pianists Hélène Grimaud and Jean-Yves Thibaudet as soloists Orchestra’s commitment to cultural diplomacy highlighted through residency activities, patron tour featuring chef Michael Solomonov, and business development trip (Philadelphia, February 13, 2018)—As part of its commitment to cultural diplomacy, The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will tour Europe and Israel from May 24 through June 5, 2018. The visit to Israel—in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia—coincides with the country’s 70th anniversary and marks only the second time The Philadelphia Orchestra has traveled there since its inaugural visit in 1992. The Philadelphia Orchestra is the only major American symphony orchestra to travel to Israel during this anniversary year and only the third to ever visit the country; the last time an American orchestra visited Israel was in 1996. Following a highly successful 2015 European tour, Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestra will return to the continent, bringing the renowned “Philadelphia Sound” to devoted fans in important musical cities, including debut performances at the Jean Nouvel-designed Philharmonie de Paris and the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. -

ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE, SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN SYMPHONIES From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman FRANCO ALFANO (1876-1960, ITALY) Born in Posillipo, Naples. After studying the piano privately with Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition with Camillo de Nardis and Paolo Serrao at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Naples, he attended the Leipzig Conservatory where he completed his composition studies with Salomon Jadassohn. He worked all over Europe as a touring pianist before returning to Italy where he eventually settled in San Remo. He held several academic positions: first as a teacher of composition and then director at the Liceo Musicale, Bologna, then as director of the Liceo Musicale (later Conservatory) of Turin and professor of operatic studies at the Conservatorio di San Cecilia, Rome. As a composer, he speacialized in opera but also produced ballets, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. He is best known for having completed Puccini’s "Turandot." Symphony No. 1 in E major "Classica" (1908-10) Israel Yinon/Brandenburg State Orchestra, Frankfurt ( + Symphony No. 2) CPO 777080 (2005) Symphony No. 2 in C major (1931-2) Israel Yinon/Brandenburg State Orchestra, Frankfurt ( + Symphony No. 1) CPO 777080 (2005) ANTONIÓ VICTORINO D'ALMEIDA (b.1940, PORTUGAL) Born in Lisbon.. He was a student of Campos Coelho and graduated from the Superior Piano Course of the National Conservatory of Lisbon. He then studied composition with Karl Schiske at the Vienna Academy of Music. He had a successful international career as a concert pianist and has composed prolifically in various genres including: instrumental piano solos, chamber music, symphonic pieces and choral-symphonic music, songs, opera, cinematic and theater scores. -

BENELUX AND SWISS SYMPHONIES From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs And LPs Prepared by Michael Herman JEAN ABSIL (1893-1974) BELGIUM Born in Bonsecours, Hainaut. After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. Symphony No. 2, Op. 25 (1936) René Defossez/Belgian National Orchestra ( + Piano Concerto No. 1, Andante and Serenade in 5 Movements) CYPRÈS (MUSIQUE EN WALLONIE) CYP 3602 (1996) (original LP release: DECCA 173.290) (1958) RAFFAELE D'ALESSANDRO (1911-1959) SWITZERLAND Born in St. Gallen. After some early musical training, he studied in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Dupré (organ), Paul Roës (piano) and Nadia Boulanger (counterpoint). He eventually gave up composing in order to earn a living as an organist.
