Objectives: This is an introductory course to Spanish art. Its purpose is to present key figures and concepts of Spanish artistic culture and to provide a general overview of the different contexts in which they arose and developed. At the end of the course, students will have acquired conceptual tools to approach artistic works created during diverse historical periods and will be able to determine their characteristics and meaning. We’ll take a trip down memory lane as we study the painting, architecture and sculpture produced across the Spanish territory. We will study emblematic buildings, such as the Alhambra in Granada, and painters like El Greco, Velázquez, Goya and Picasso. We will take advantage of the opportunity that being in Barcelona affords to examine the legacy of Roman culture, Medieval art and Modernism, and to study the most emblematic figures of Catalan art, such as Gaudí and Miró. The main objectives of this course are: 1. To familiarize students with key concepts of Spanish art. 2. For students to acquire knowledge of Spanish artists and significant works of art produced in Spain. 3. To give students the necessary tools to analyze and contextualize works pertaining to different genres.
Requirements: Oral and written Spanish Level B2. Class attendance and participation.

Learning outcomes: 1. To identify key elements of Spanish art. 2. To be able to use vocabulary related to the history of European art properly. 3. To assimilate the connection between artistic phenomena and other cultural expressions as well as with politics, society, philosophy, religion and economy. 4. To develop strategies for autonomous learning. 5. To develop critical reasoning on artistic objects. 6. To communicate acquired knowledge effectively.

Methodology of the course: - Theoretical classes with audiovisual support. - Analysis of images and texts. - Oral presentations. - Tutorials.
Evaluation: 5 Questionnaires (70%) During the course, the topics explained and worked on in class will be evaluated Individual Presentation (20%) Each student will have to choose and present a work of art taken from a list provided by the professor. The presentations will last a maximum of 10 minutes and will have to be accompanied by some sort of audiovisual support (Power Point, Prezi, etc). Attendance and Participation (10 %) Attendance and participation are valued positively.
