Class meets all day with a lunch break on class days. Most lectures and activities occur on site. There will be two free afternoons. Evaluation No pass/fail allowed for this class. Honors credit for special project possible if petitioned prior to program.

Pre-program Open-book Exam submitted electronically by December 30, 2016 (30%) The pre-program exam covers readings which provide a foundation for your learning experience in Madrid. Additional readings will be assigned in Madrid to prepare you for field trips and, like these, they will be addressed in your journal questions, group discussions, and the final exam. Revision is possible within 3 days with the automatic deduction of 10 points, except in case of plagiarism which results in a grade of F.

For each reading, the instructor will supply one or more questions that you will answer in one well- reasoned paragraph per reading. These readings will be discussed in Madrid and addressed again in the final exam, in which you will be asked to analyze artwork by drawing on the disciplines of art history and religious studies to explain how an interdisciplinary approach enhances understanding of the subject.

Upload the completed assignment to the course site on Canvas or email it to [email protected] as a Word document (double-spaced, size 12 font) by December 30, 2016. Your document will be submitted to SafeAssign, a plagiarism checker. Please do your own thinking and write in your own words.

Academic Journal with Digital Photographs (30%) This is an academic, electronic journal with daily entries addressing questions provided by the instructor and thoughtful reflections on your experiences in . It includes your best digital photographs from each day, recording the highlights of sites we visit, favorite artworks when photos of them are allowed, and community scenes that capture important aspects of contemporary Spanish culture. The journal will be reviewed midway through the program. You may revise the journal to submit by the deadline of January 15, 2017. Upload your document to the assignment on the Canvas course site or email it to the professor.

Participation in Discussions and On-site Learning (10%) Enthusiastic, cooperative, and consistent participation is expected in all program activities including lectures, discussions, collaborative projects, field trips, and special events.

Open-book Final Exam (30%) The final exam includes the following: analytical essays comparing major works of art in terms of style, content, and cultural context; an essay explaining the ways a particular artwork reflects the values and modes of thought of the cultural context in which it was made; essays drawing on course readings and methodology from the disciplines of art history and religious studies to explain the cultural significance of an artwork; slide identification (artist, title, date, period/style).
