MAN DETAINE BY POLICE A supporter of the Irish Freedom Movement was arrested in the University Union two weeks ago, accused of belonging to an illegal terrorist organisa- tion. The 23 year-old man was selling IFM literature outside the Porters' Office when he was approached by a plain-clothes policeman who was on duty on the University campus. The man attempted to retreat further into the Union but the police const- able. with assistance from another officer, arrested him and escorted him to Millgarth police station. NO CHARGE He was threatened with charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act hut, after being detained and questioned for an hour, was released with no charges having been made. He described the behaviour of the police as "intimidating and unnecessarily. antagonistic.- A formal complaint was lodged by Cultural Affairs Secret- ary, Guy Hollands, on behalf of the Union against the entry of the policemen into the building without permission. Identities that are performed and mediated through a relationship between flmmaker and participant are examined with detailed reference to two decades of my own practice. A refexive, feminist approach engages my own flms - and the relationships that produced them - in analysis of the ethical potholes and emotional challenges in representing others on TV. The trigger for this research was the furiously angry reaction of the One Direction fandom to my representation of them in Crazy About One Direction (Channel 4, 2013). This offered an opportunity to investigate the potential for shame in documentary; a loud and clear case study of flmed participants using social media to contest their image on screen.

Norah Jones first emerged on the world stage with the February 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self- described "moody little record" that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from prevailing pop music of the time. Since then Norah has sold 45 million albums worldwide and became a 9-time Grammy-winner. Now Norah has come full circle with Day Breaks, her remarkable sixth album which finds her returning to her jazz roots while also proving her to be this era's quintessential American artist, the purveyor of an unmistakably unique sound that weaves together the threads of several bedrock styles of American music: country, folk, rock, soul and jazz. Day Breaks is a kindred spirit with Come Away With Me, though it is unquestionably the work of a mature artist who has lived life and grown immensely in her craft. Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah.
