GENERAL 1. All entries must be made on the Show’s printed form/online form and be accompanied by the appropriate remittance for the classes entered. 2. Members of the Society and Subscribers paying £27.50 or more will receive a badge which gives admission to the Show and to the Members’ Terrace. Subscriptions and Entry Fees include VAT. The Westmorland County Agricultural Society privacy policy sets out the basis on which any personal data we collect from you, that you provide to us or that we may receive from others about you will be processed by us. It includes data that we hold electronically and in paper files. Names, limited address particulars and details of entries will be published in the catalogue of entries and passed to our printers, solely for the purpose of compiling the catalogue. Results information may be published (in printed form and online) and provided to the Press and Breed Societies for publication. Information relating to Exhibitors and their animals may be provided to DEFRA, Trading Standards, Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS), SAC, Breed Societies, County Councils, Veterinary Advisors and others who have regulatory access. No late entries – The Chief Executive has strict instructions not to accept any entries received after the respective closing date: Monday 20th August 2018, unless otherwise stated within the individual section. 5. All classes are open with no radius restriction, unless otherwise stated. 6. All exhibitors agree to abide by Rules and Conditions quoted by submitting their Official Entry Form. 7. The Judging of all Classes will commence at the stated times. ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION/CERTIFICATES 8. No animal will be allowed in any Ring unless the proper numbered card is appropriately attached. 9. Show Numbers – issued with exhibitors passes or available for collection within the section. 10. Certificates/movement permits should be made available in all appropriate cases. CATTLE EXHIBITORS 11. Attested ear numbers for all cattle must be stated on the entry form. The Chief Executive is empowered to refuse entries where this information is not given. Ear marks may be inspected on entry to the Showground. 12. Cattle exhibitors should be familiar with HSE Guidance Note AIS35 on the handling of bulls. SHEEP EXHIBITORS 13. Sheep pens will be named and Exhibitors’ sheep penned together. MV and Non MV segregation will be strictly observed. FULL MEMBERSHIP TO THE SOCIETY 14. The above reference to Members and Subscribers of £27.50 or more relates to those individuals who wish to take temporary membership of the Society for Show Day only. Full membership of the Society is open to applicants who are proposed by an existing full member, who have paid the appropriate subscription and who have been approved by the Management Committee of the Society. Applications must be made in the manner prescribed and applicants may enjoy the privileges of Members’ facilities on Show Day but may not vote until their membership is confirmed and they shall be bound by the rules, bylaws and regulations of the Society for the time being. 6 FARMS and STOCKS Entry Fee In All Classes £10

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:- Boundaries – The former County of Westmorland and such parts of adjoining counties as are within a 30-mile radius of the Showground. Judging – will take place in the three weeks prior to Show Day, to be completed by the evening of Monday 10th September. Rules 24, 25 & 26 – Exhibitors’ attention is specially drawn to the terms and conditions expressed in the rules of the Society. (Details at the end of this Schedule). Exhibitors are requested to house their livestock as adjacent to the farmstead as possible to assist the judges. Note re Classes 3 – 6 - The stock classes are designed to encourage good husbandry. Therefore the judge will be asked to take into account the management, marketing, general husbandry and conformation of the herd. All cattle in the respective classes must be shown, other stock at the judge’s discretion.

THE PYE CUP (GPF71) – Presented by Messrs W & J Pye to the winner of Class 8

Class 9 JUDGE: Mr D A Robinson, Settle Sheep flock (upland breeds) – the judge will take into account the extent and quality of the farm. 60% of the stock must be available for judging, which will take place during November 2018. Results will be published following judging with prizes presented at the 2019 Westmorland County Show.

Other - Gardens

The judge will take into consideration the overall design and layout of the garden area(s), which could include the drive, entrance and yard(s) etc. They will evaluate mix of colour, variety and quality of plants, any special features, environmental considerations. Gardens may include floral and/or vegetable planting.

THE CHRIS LAMBERT BURSARY

The Chris Lambert Bursary has been set up in memory of the late Chris Lambert, who was Secretary to the Society for over 25 years. Its primary function is to help and encourage people, involved or interested in various forms of agriculture, to improve their knowledge by funding either educational research or travel.

The Bursary fund allows for approximately £1,500 to be awarded annually to one or more persons living within a 55-mile radius of Lane Farm, Crooklands. There is no age limit and the terms of the Bursary are particularly flexible in order to be as helpful to as many as possible.

10 CATTLE CLASSES The Cattle Section is Generously Sponsored by Entry Fee: Members: All entries £10.00 Non Members: First Entry £15.00, subsequent entries £10.00 Entry fees include straw bedding

ARRIVAL: Due to access difficulties on Show morning, all exhibitors are advised to have their stock in place by 9.00pm on the evening before Show Day. The Society will offer two Stockmen Supper vouchers to each exhibitor for use between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.

LOCATION/HOUSING: All cattle are housed in a Marquee which will be available from 2.00pm on the day prior to the Show, or earlier by arrangement.

Straw bedding will be provided.

Stalls - will be allocated and marked by the Society. Specific requirements should be clearly stated on the entry form, particularly when a calf will accompany it’s mother.

Walkways must not be obstructed and exhibitors are to keep individual areas clear.

All cattle to be in place by 8.15am on the morning of the Show.

JUDGING/CATTLE IDENTIFICATION: Young Handler classes to commence at 8.30am, followed by all breed sections at 9.15am approx.

Overall dairy and beef section awards will commence immediately on completion of the last class in the respective categories.

Cattle numbers will be available on arrival from the cattle passport steward.

Full details of date of birth and earmark (UK Number or equivalent) must be supplied for all animals in cattle classes, including calves which accompany their mother(s).

Passports are required for all cattle. Exhibitors are responsible for compliance with any DEFRA Animal Health regulations in force at the time of the Show.

TB Testing – all exhibitors will require a clear pre-movement TB test prior to attending, including those from a 4-year testing parish. Certificates are required on arrival or submitted in advance. For general information on pre and post movement testing, please see the Defra website: www.defra.gov.uk/animal-diseases/a-z/bovine-tb/animal-keepers/testing/ Westmorland County Showground is located in a Low Risk Area (LRA) and post movement testing therefore does not apply. Contact the Show office if further information is required. 11 CATTLE CLASSES: All bulls over 2 years old should be attended by two persons. Exhibitors should be familiar with HSE Guidance Note AIS35 re the handling of bulls.

White smocks worn during judging shall be unmarked. Exhibitors requested to be of smart appearance, dress code as specified by the respective breed societies.

All stock forward should be halter trained.

The Society reserves the right to refuse entry to the Showground/cattle rings to any animal deemed not fit to be shown.

Substitutions only permitted in the same class. In the heifer classes only, exhibitors may nominate three animals for every two animals entered and then exhibit only two for their three nominations, but no more than two.

Only pre-entered animals are allowed to compete in pairs/groups classes. No entries permitted on the day.

Any Cattle Class may be split, or amalgamated, at the discretion of the Chief Cattle Steward.

In the event that any section has fewer than 10 entries, with less than 3 exhibitors, entries may be transferred to the Any Other Breed section.

Any Section that has only one exhibitor, who may have entered stock in all or some of the classes in that Section, may be cancelled and if so the appropriate entry fees returned in full to the exhibitor.

ANTI TAMPERING The Society reserves the right to Blood Test animals. Offending animals will be disqualified. Any artificial contrivance or device of any description found on or proved to have been used on an animal at any time whilst that animal is in the Showground, either for preventing the flow of milk or for any other improper purpose, will disqualify that animal from being awarded a prize, and any prize awarded prior to discovery will be forfeited. The Instigator or The Owner of the said animal may be prohibited from again entering Stock for any of the Society’s Shows, for such period as the Committee may see fit. For the purpose of this Regulation, the term ‘improper practice’ shall be held to include setting of teats, and generally any other practice including tampering or of their own or any other animal by the exhibitor or any other person which results in the animals being shown other than in a natural state, and the Society reserves the right to have all animals inspected by the Society’s Veterinary Officers, either prior to, during, or after judging. The Society will not tolerate the administration to show exhibits (entered either for competition or sale/demonstration) of tranquillisers or other drugs which may in any way affect the performance of the animal in question to have the effect of making it behave in the show ring in a manner which is not natural. The Society reserves the right to take any necessary samples.

Any Person or Exhibitor (or his representative) who is found to have administered or permitted the administration of any such tranquilliser or drugs to any Show exhibit will be reported to the Management Committee, and dealt with at their discretion. In addition the matter will be referred to the appropriate Breed Society or Organisation. Objections must be submitted in written format on the form provided with a deposit of £50. A form can be obtained from the Secretary’s office. On completion the form should be personally handed to the Chief Cattle Steward or a member of staff in the Secretary’s office. If, on investigation, the objection is not sustained to the satisfaction of the Committee, the sum thus deposited shall, at the discretion of the Committee, be forfeited to the funds of the Society. All objections must be lodged on the same day as the alleged incident occurred in accordance with the objection regulations, and no objection will be SUBSEQUENTLY received, unless a reason, satisfactory to the Committee be assigned for the delay.

12 DEFINITION OF EXHIBITOR BRED:  An animal is defined as “Exhibitor Bred” if it is born in the UK and carries the owner’s prefix.  This includes animals born as a result of embryo transplant.

PRIZES: PRIZE MONEY: Cash may be collected on Show Day at the ICE Mobile Banking Facility on presentation of the prize voucher. To claim prize money by cheque, forward prize vouchers to the Show office before 13 October 2018.

SHEEP PENS & IDENTIFICATION: Sheep pens will be named and Exhibitor’s sheep penned together as allocated by the Society. MV and Non MV segregation will be strictly observed. Catalogues will be on sale adjacent to the Sheep Lines. Sheep will be off loaded at the direction of the Stewards and the Lines must be cleared of vehicles as soon as possible. Appropriate MV certificates and movement licences must be handed to the Steward on arrival. Identification of all sheep must comply with regulations currently in force. Exhibitors may not leave until after 4.00pm

ACCOMMODATION: Limited overnight accommodation for sheep is available if required. Exhibitors must contact the office to make arrangements in advance.

GRAND PARADE: All sheep eligible for the grand parade must be available as required, at the direction of the Chief Sheep Steward, i.e. Lowland Terminal Champion (sections 1-6), Lowland Non- Terminal Champion (sections 7-15), Upland Champion (sections 16-28).

Conditions of Entry for Fleeces: 1. All fleeces entered must be from the 2018 wool clip. 2. Competitors are responsible for delivering their own fleeces. They must be in place by 9.00am for judging to commence at 10.00 am. They must remain on display until 4.00pm. Competitors are subsequently responsible for removing own fleeces. 3. Fleeces remain the responsibility of the owners throughout the show. The organisers will not accept any liability for loss or damage to any fleece. 4. Fleeces must be submitted in a clean bag, with a class entry label attached. 5. Any fleece which is artificially stained or coloured or tied with string or baler twine will be disqualified. 6. The judge and/or steward(s) reserve the right to divide or amalgamate classes or move fleeces to a more appropriate class should entry numbers deem it necessary. 7. The competition will be judged by a BWMB judge and his decision will be final.

Please note an entry in the Fleece Competition does not entitle an admission ticket to the Show, however exhibitors may purchase tickets at £12.00 instead of the normal admission rates, subject to the tickets being purchased on or before the closing date for entries. Due to access difficulties on Show morning, all exhibitors must have their stock in place by 6.00pm on the evening before Show Day, unless prior arrangements have been made. The Society will offer two Stockmen Supper vouchers to each exhibitor for use between 7.30pm and 10.30pm.

AN ELECTRONIC ANIMAL MOVEMENT LICENCE (eAML2) issued under the Pigs (Records, Identification and Movement) Order 2011 must accompany all pigs. Appropriate movement licences and certification to be completed beforehand and must be handed to the Steward.

Judging will commence at 8.30am, followed by the breed championships, Supreme Championship, pairs, group of 3 and junior handler. Exhibitors may not leave before 4.00pm.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: All pigs in classes P1 to P14 & P20 to P25 must be registered with the British Pig Association or equivalent society. Proper pig boards and sticks are required. Handlers are requested to be of smart appearance and white coats must be worn when exhibiting. Boars aged twelve months or more at the time of the show must have their tusks cut prior to the show and must be shown by two competent adult handlers who are equipped with protective boards. Pens – pens for pigs must be requested and paid for with entry; kit pens will be allocated 1 kit per 2 exhibitors, provided free of charge. Registration numbers and date of birth for each entry must be included on the entry form. All pigs to be the property of the exhibitor. The Stewards are responsible for the running of the section and their decisions will be final.

JUDGING/GOAT IDENTIFICATION: The goat classes are held under the rules, regulations and recognition of the British Goat Society. All exhibits must be registered with the BGS as in the ownership and in the name of the exhibitor. The registered name and number must be quoted on the entry form. (Also the kidding date for goats in milk). All goats in milk must be kidded or aborted a minimum of 30 days previous to the date of the Show. No entries will be accepted in the B or W categories unless CAE blood test results are on BGS submission forms or Sheep and Goat Health Scheme forms. This is to enable quick and accurate confirmation of the status of the goats attending a show. The registered number of any goat initially entered as RAF must be submitted to the show organiser before that goat competes. No pregnant goat may be admitted to the Showfield. Goats in milk must quote kidding date and must have been kidded or aborted at least 30 days prior to Show Day. All goats in milk, whether entered in the Milking Competition or not must be on the Showfield in time to be stripped out at 6 pm on Wednesday 12th September 2018. This is a halter show (short-fleeced), to be guided by the general rules and conditions recommended by the British Alpaca Society. Due to the early start on Show morning, exhibitors are invited to arrive from 3pm on the afternoon prior to Show Day. The Society will offer two Stockman Supper vouchers to each exhibitor for use between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. All alpacas (except Class A500) must be registered with the British Alpaca Society and must be easily identifiable as such by the Steward. Handlers are requested to be of smart appearance and white coats and suitable footwear must be worn when exhibiting. Classes may be amalgamated dependant on entries, as decided by the Judge.

Comprehensive biosecurity procedures will be in place, in accordance with BAS guidance and a reduction in the number of entries may be necessary to enable the required gap between breeders.

In the event of being over-subscribed, the organisers reserve the right to restrict the number of alpacas per class and/or to close entries early.

69 Conditions of Competition 1. The Exhibitor must in all cases be the owner of the animal shown (see Rule 23). 2. The ENTRY LIST for all entries will close on Monday 20th AUGUST 2018. No late entries will be accepted. Poultry, Alpacas, Light Horse, Showjumping & Lowland Flock excepted. 3. No animal can be shown in more than one Class, nor shall one animal take more than one Prize. Group and Special Prizes and Light Horses excepted. 4. Animals entering the Showground area, in all respects, are at the risk of the owner. The Society will not be responsible for any accident which may occur through any animal exhibited, and it shall be a condition of entry that each Exhibitor shall hold the Society harmless, and indemnify it against any legal proceedings arising from such accident. You are strongly advised to check your insurance cover on this point. Bulls must be led and ringed at the nose. 5. All Prizewinners in the Cattle Classes must take part in the Parade of Prize Animals or the Prizes will be withheld. 6. In order to discourage frivolous protests, every protest must be made in writing and sent to the Secretary within seven clear days after the date of the Show, and to be accompanied by a deposit of £50 to be returned, or retained, by the vote of the Committee, on consideration as to whether there was reasonable ground or not for the protest. 7. The Conditions attached to any Premium are applicable to all animals gaining a prize of whatever denomination. 8. If only one entry is received in any section, this section may be withdrawn. The entrant will be notified and the entry fee returned. 9. The winners of Cups, Trophies and/or Plaques must return them to the Society’s office at Lane Farm or to the Society’s appointed Jeweller, Mr W Philip, 6 Collin Hill, Kendal, on or before 1st July within the year following the Show, or in default of this requirement a penalty of £25 will be imposed. These cups, etc, shall be the responsibility of the winner until they are in the hands of the Society or its appointed Jeweller. Proof of posting will be required if an article is lost or alleged to be lost in the post. 10. All cups should be considered to be ‘perpetual’ unless stated otherwise. 11. All exhibitors will be subject to the orders of the Society’s officials. Abuse, physical or verbal, towards stewards and staff will not be tolerated and exhibitors or their assistants not obeying the directions of the Society’s officers will render themselves liable to expulsion from the Showground. 12. In the event of what is considered by the Management Committee to be a serious contravention of the Rules, not apparent within the 7-day period under condition 6, the 7-day period need not apply. 13. A Disciplinary Committee consisting of the Referee, Chairman, Chief Executive and appropriate Chief Steward is empowered to represent the Society on matters relating to the Show on Show day and their decision shall be binding. 14. All persons entering an animal in a class covered by a Breed Society shall be deemed to have consented to the jurisdiction of the relevant Breed Society and be subject to it’s Rules and disciplinary procedures including exclusion from exhibiting.

70 Extract from Rules of Society 1. This Society, established in 1799, for the purpose of improving the breed of stock and the management and cultivation of farms has for its objects the promotion of the interests of Agriculture in general and to combine and foster the interests of town and country. 5.1 Applicants for membership, having paid the current membership subscription, shall on Show Day have the rights and privileges of a member (save voting rights until voting membership is confirmed) and shall otherwise be bound by the rules bylaws and regulations of the Society for the time being. 7. Every subscriber of £27.50 a year and upwards may apply to be a Member of the Society. Subscriptions shall become due and paid by Show Day in each year, and any person whose application has not been approved shall not be entitled to vote at any meeting. No member shall be allowed to withdraw his name without giving notice in writing to the Chief Executive of his intention to do so previous to the 1st December in each year. 13. All conditions of competition framed by the Committee shall be as binding as these Rules, providing the same be in no way at variance therewith. 23. When a Premium or Prize is offered for any animal without expressing that it be in the hands of the Breeder such animal shall have been the bona fide property of the Exhibitor and located upon their premises for a period of not less than three calendar months immediately preceding the Show Day. Horses, sheep and pigs excepted. 24. No person (except in the case of a son succeeding his father, a widow her husband) shall be admitted to claim for the best managed farm until he has been in bona-fide occupation of such farm for three years at least. The Inspectors in making their awards shall have special regard to the improvements made by the Tenant as distinguished from those made by the Landlord. 25. If a person shall obtain a First Prize in any of the Farms and Stocks classes (classes 1 – 11) for two consecutive years, he shall not be entitled to compete again for the same Prize in the year immediately succeeding the date of the second award; and whenever such person shall again become a competitor, the inspectors shall direct their attention particularly to the improvements made on the farm during the last two years. 26. The word ‘Farm’ shall mean the entire holding or holdings of the competitor, being either proprietary occupier or tenant, when lying together or farmed from the same homestead, exclusive of woods, roads, rivers and high-lying grounds not adapted for ploughing, and whether or not farmed under different landlords or held under different agreements. N.B. Inasmuch as it is impossible to frame this Rule so as to meet every case, the Committee shall have power, in the event of dispute to decide each case on its own merits, but in accordance as far as possible with the true intent and spirit of this Rule, and their decisions shall be final. 30. Any member knowingly making any false entry, or otherwise attempting to impose on the Society, shall not be allowed to continue as a member.
