The Society regards the safety of all employees, volunteers and the general public, to be of paramount importance at all times. The Society will ensure that all statutory provisions are complied with and that all persons recognise their statutory duty to co- operate in this respect to ensure safe working practices.

The provisions of this policy shall also apply to contractors working on the showground, such as catering staff, marquee erectors, trade exhibitors and competitors. This policy applies to all persons on the Showground, including the general public, who should take the necessary steps to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.

This policy will be reviewed regularly to take account of changes in circumstances and any alteration to relevant legislation.

2. Organisation for putting the Policy to effect

The Society is under the control of the Executive Committee and elected members. The responsibility for putting the Policy into effect rests with the Safety Officer, the Chairman and Stewards of the various sections. A list of officers and committees are shown in the front of this document.

3. Arrangements for carrying out the Policy

The Safety Officer, the Chairman and Stewards for the various sections, are empowered to take whatever action they consider necessary in the event of the infringement of Safety Regulations or safe working practices.

All exhibitors, caterers and contractors must note the action they are expected to take and this Safety policy will be brought to their attention.

4. Motor Vehicles

Pedestrian access routed from the Car Parks must be safe and clearly signposted and should avoid routes used by traffic and animals as far as possible. Where this cannot be avoided, warning signs shall be displayed and these points stewarded.

5.Livestock.

Particular care must be taken to ensure that animals are securely tied in stalls, or the gates of pens securely closed. When being prepared for, care should be taken to protect members of the public standing close by. Visitors are often unfamiliar with the behaviour of animals and are unaware of the potential danger they might be in or which they might create through their own actions.

All one year old and over must have rings in their noses and the exhibitors of bulls must comply with the requirements of HSE Guidance Note GS36 “Safe Custody and Safe Handling of Bulls at Agricultural Show”.

All dogs except where exhibiting on the Showground must be kept on a short 1m maximum lead at all times. Extending leads are forbidden.

If medical assistance is refused, the disclaimer on the back of the accident form must be completed and signed by the injured person. If this person refuses to sign, the disclaimer must be signed by the Safety Officer, Steward and an independent witness.

The Society will keep copies of all accident forms for seven years, any death or specified injury will be reported immediately to the relevant enforcing authority under the Reporting of Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR). If not complied with Police to be requested to assist Stewards already in arena to eject the person(s) who are trespassing 5. Police Officers will take up positions inside the arena facing outwards. If any demonstrators attempt to re-enter the arena, they should be told by the Police that if they make such an attempt they will be arrested 6. If between the loud speaker announcement, or at any other time, a demonstrator commits an act which constitutes a definite offence, he only, should, and must be arrested. No persons should be arrested merely for being in the ring If persons are arrested for conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, it is important that evidence should be obtained from members of the public as so there reactions (and likely reactions, had Police and Stewards not intervened), when the demonstration took place.

Action in the Event of Suspicious Packages/Vehicles Bombs are easily disguised. They may be hidden in bags, cases or other everyday containers and in out-of-the-way places. Vehicles can carry large bombs without showing any signs. Any object which is unusual or out of place should be treated with suspicion and dealt with in the way described below: 1. Do not touch or move it 2. Clear people away from the area closed by and keep them away. For packages ensure 100m distance and for vehicles and anything bigger than a suitcase, 400m 3.
