Workers and Intelligentsia in Late Imperial Russia: Realities, Representations, Reflections Edited by Reginald E. Zelnik Description: The collapse of the Soviet Union opened previously unimagined possibilities for insight into Russian social, intellectual, and political history. This volume, a collaboration of American, Russian, and West European scholars, illuminates the creation and complex dynamics of the Russian industrial working class from its peasant origins in the mid-nineteenth century to the collapse of the imperial system in 1917. The authors focus on the shifting attitudes, cultural norms, self-representations, and increasing self-consciousness of workers as they interacted with the new social movements, student groups, the Church, and most dramatically, the political (mainly radical and liberal) intelligentsia. But the authors also examine the obverse: the contending representations of workers by the intelligentsia as they interacted with each other ever more intensely during this turbulent period leading up to the Russian Revolution. The result is a fascinating and detailed account of social and cultural transformation in a key period of Russian — and world — history. These thirty-three years of the Soviet regime were characterized by the domination of censorship, a persecution of "formalism" and control over artistic expression. However, in these dark conditions the animation industry flourished and striking political films appeared. These films told personal stories and intimate secrets in a way that was not immediately recognizable, sometimes thought of as madness or simply overlooked by the censorship for the simple reason, that animation was thought of as an art for children that could not pose any danger. This dissertation aims at recognizing political revolt and subversion in the animation industry through an analysis of the ambivalent conditions of the Soviet repression system that simultaneously curbed and led to a rise in creativity. The economy was in decline. My family lived in Murmansk, the biggest fishing port in the north of the Soviet Union, where no more fresh fish was sold in the shops. A variety of four cheeses was reduced to onе, and the same cheese, something similar to Gouda, was renamed several times, acquiring ever fancier names, with a simultaneous increase in price. People had to queue long hours to buy basic goods. The official ideology was like glass, cracked all over the surface: it may be that the millions of people did not know of an alternative, but nobody really believed anymore in the stale dull language of communist propaganda. As young intellectuals, we were extremely sceptical of communist discourse, mocking and despising its slogans and telling anti-Soviet jokes, but our perception of this whole Soviet system was deep repulsion combined with certain recognition of its, as it seemed, strength and durability. At the beginning of 1970, a manuscript called “Moscow-Petushki” began to circulate in Moscow samizdat (underground circulation). The name of an author – Venedikt Yerofeyev was completely unknown to any readership. -

Clearly, it is still very much on our minds. Several years ago, I was summoned to Cyprus to see a dying friend. She had a thriving international legal practice, hobnobbed with the rich and famous, and wrote poetry in her spare time – may she rest in peace! It took five layovers to get to her, and when I arrived, she kicked everyone out of the room to ask me an important question. I was filled with trepidation. What could she possibly want to know – something about her will, where she wanted to be buried, special instructions for the living? After everyone left the room, she asked me: “Lyus, what do you think the intelligentsia is?” I was really stunned but pulled myself together and answered: “Well, the intelligentsia are educated people whose actions are not motivated by self-interest…” She shook her head, “No, no.” She died that same night, leaving me to wonder why the question mattered to her in the last hours of her life. I can’t be entirely sure but hope this essay will provide partial answers. This vanishing breed is hard to pin down. The intelligentsia has included those leaning toward Europe and enamored with the East, liberals and conservatives, believers and atheists, workaholics and idlers, yet always humanists, the kind we meet on the pages of our beloved classics. -

Astafyev) [email protected] Natalya K L I M O V I C H (Siberian Federal University) [email protected] THE TRADITIONALIST DISCOURSE OF CONTEMPORARY RUSSIAN LITERATURE: FROM NEO-TRADITIONALISM TO “NEW REALISM” Accepted: 10 July 2018 UDK 821.161.1(091)”19/20”:316.7 The article analyses modern traditionalism and its main directions (classical traditionalism, neo-traditionalism and new realism). This 315 analysis encompasses the reasons for a returning interest to the realistic principles of writing, and the dialogues between traditionalism and the avant-garde and the cosmos and chaos as key to the development of culture as a whole. It highlights the ways in which current literary studies and criticism reflect the shift of the cultural paradigm and the transition from the poetics of postmodernism to the realistic principles of writing, while preserving elements of postmodern aesthetics. Particular attention is paid to the increasingly controversial direction of “new realism”, which is represented by two key areas: patriotic and naturalistic. The “new realism” authors actively form their own mythology, participating in politics, and trying to reconcile Soviet and anti-Soviet discourses. They search for “avant-gardism in conservatism”, where conservatism is a treasury of Russian classic images, and avant- gardism is the innovations that reflect the current public realia. The article provides a detailed analysis of the literary work of Siberian author Mikhail Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky’s work combines elements of the poetics of “classical traditionalism” and “new realism” to present an original geopolitical project and a cultural character capable of bringing the country to a new level of civilisation.
