No one more castigated the wealthy classes for their neglect of the Russian peasantry than this celebrated author of savage civic poetry, but Nekrásov himself, who had known extreme poverty in his early years, enjoyed a far from edifying existence, spending freely on drink, gambling, expensive cooks and even more expensive mistresses. Nekrásov was indeed an editor of genius, getting the best from the many famous contributors to his magazines, and shepherding their work through censorship, but he was also a shrewd entrepreneur disliked for his hardnosed and sometimes questionable business dealings. Turgénev and Tolstóy were repelled by the prosaic nature of Nekrásov’s poetry, but that very nature was praised by his advocates for its unflinching realism despite the indifferent verse, or ― equally wrong-headedly ― for its lyricism despite the unvarying vengeance and grief in its themes. -

Poetry Translation in the Cross- Cultural Context (Russian – English Perspective)
67 Poetry Translation in the Cross- cultural Context (Russian – English Perspective) A tradução poética em um contexto comparativo (perspectiva russo- inglesa) Marina Tsvetkova1 Abstract: The article explores matters of poetry translation from a cross-cultural perspective. Translation of poetry has traditionally been viewed predominantly from the point of view of the translated text fidelity to the original. However, a much more fascinating question is what kind of cultural transfigurations take place when a poetic text is translated from one language to another. This article shows that most significant changes can be found at the levels of themes, key words, genre, stylistic devices, grammar, punctuation, intonation, prosody (rhythm and rhyme) and phonosemantics. The theoretical points are illustrated with contrastive analyses of Russian poems by Marina Tsvetaeva, Anna Akhmatova, Mikhail Lermontov, Gavriil Derzhavin and their English versions. INTRODUCTION: POETRY OF THE RUSSIAN SILVER AGE Sibelan Forrester and Martha Kelly oetry is only one of the exciting cultural achievements of the Russian Pfin-de-siècle, which has come to be known as the Silver Age. Along with the Ballets russes, the music of Alexander Scriabin or Igor Stravinsky, the avant- garde painting of Kazimir Malevich or Marc Chagall, and the philosophical writings of Lev Shestov or Nikolai Berdyaev, poetry is one of the era’s most precious treasures. The Silver Age witnessed an unprecedented and fruitful interaction between Russian literature and the other arts, sometimes within the same person: several of the major poets were (or could have been) musi- cians and composers; others were painters, important literary critics, religious thinkers, scholars, or philosophers. -

Bold in their formal and aesthetic innovations, the works of this century pose the decisive questions of Russian modernity and pursue urgent issues of social, political and theological import. The course is a study of Russian literature from the beginning of the nineteenth century through to the very early twentieth century and introduces students to a range of authors, genres and issues. In order to achieve a balance of depth and breadth, the paper is organised around the study of two set texts and four topics. (There are suggested pathways through the texts and topics tailored to Part IB, option A (ex-ab initio) students, but students should not feel limited to these.)
