Phinnarat Akharawatthanakun Assistant Professor Ph.D. Linguistics, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 2004 Phinnarat Akharawatthanakun regularly teaches phonological analysis, historical and comparative linguistics, field methods in linguistics, and occasionally lexicography at Payap University since 2006. Her research focuses mainly on the phonetics and phonology of tone, and on phonological and lexical variation and change in Tai languages, especially Lao. In addition to phonetics, phonology, field linguistics, sociolinguistics and dialectology, she is interested in linguistic reconstruction and investigates the historical and comparative aspects of language change, especially the contact-induced external factors. As the first private university in Thailand, we are proud of our role in preparing students to become leaders and contributing members of society. We strive to adhere to our motto “Truth and Service” by seeking academic and moral excellence, both inside and outside of the classroom. Payap accomplishes this through the collective dedication of our faculty and staff, a multi-cultural mixture of Thai and international academicians. Throughout its history, Payap University has pioneered the teaching of new fields at the university level in northern Thailand, such as music, business-related fields, law, Pharmacology, and Peacebuilding. Payap continues to build on the distinctive characteristics of its American educational heritage while never losing sight of its endearing Thai values and ideals. English skills for AEC communication: A challenge for Thai universities Kantatip Sinhaneti, Shinawatra University, Thailand Wei Fu, Shinawatra University, Thailand Abstract: ASEAN member countries are rapidly approaching a new milestone to be a single market at the end of 2015. Thailand has an ambition to be the hub for international education among ASEAN countries. English skills become more important for Thailand when AEC is fully implemented. This paper is based on a study from 16 Thai higher institutions, which offer Bachelor and Master degree programs to improve students’ communication skills in English. The results show that they offer 57 listening and speaking courses and 83 reading and writing courses under those Bachelor programs. Among the programs offered, only one university offers English for Everyday and Social Communication course. They offer a few courses under master level programs to enhance students’ 21st century skills and professional development. From such findings, lacking English communication skills courses will be a big problem for Thai workers to meet the AEC market needs. Perhaps, it’s a great challenge for Thai universities to orchestrate some changes in ELT curricula to provide more English skills courses for real life communication, especially to cater for the AEC market. World health organization classifies NCDs into four main types, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. NCDs happen as a result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviors factors. NCDs place burden on people living with NCDs, family, and society. In Thailand, more than 70 percent of all deaths occurs as the result of NCDs. Buddhist monks are at the center of NCDs crisis. Prevalence of Buddhist monks living with NCDS are continuously increasing. Based on the data from the Priest hospital, the most common NCDS in Thai monks are hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and hypertension. In addition, the majority of priest patients are also found with overweight and obesity, which are the major risk factors for NCDs. lead to heart disease and artery. The reasons why Buddhist monk is at risk for NCDs might be due to the fact that Buddhist monk is an ordained male monastic in Buddhism whose life is governed by 227 rules of the Patimokkha, the basic code of monastic discipline.
