2004-2005 OUTLOOK LIMESTONE COLLEGE

The 2004-2005 basketball season marks a new era in Limestone Hoops. In January of last year Corey Fox took over the Lady Saints Basketball Program. At 24 years of age, Fox became one of the youngest active head coaches in Division II Basketball. Fox brings a lot of energy and a fast 0 paced game plan to the court.

After guiding the Lady Saints through the second half of a 4-23 season last year, Fox 4 hit the recruiting trail. He and his staff have brought in plenty of new faces, including four standouts from two of the nation’s best - junior colleges. Fox believes that the new look Saints have the potential to win immediately and turn some heads in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. 0 “We have some very talented players. We’re inexperienced at this level, but nine of our players have played college basketball. We will look to our strong 5 group of returning and junior college players for leadership.”

The 2004-2005 Lady Saints feature two seniors. Miranda Hull will pace the team at the guard position. The fifth-year senior and two-time team captain enters the season ranked in Limestone’s top-ten for career assists. She currently stands at 7th with 187. Mo’s 85 assists as a freshman ranks 10th on Limestone’s single season list. “Hull brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the O table,” says Fox. “I also hope that her tireless work ethic and great attitude become contagious on a virtually brand new team.” Senior center Kristi Ellenberger will compete for a starting job this season for the Lady Saints. Last season Ellenberger saw action in all 27 games including one start. Coach Fox looks to Ellenberger to “carry over her improvement in workouts to game situations for U a successful senior season.”

The Saints also return two juniors and a sophomore. Leading the way for the junior class is All-CVAC guard Shell Lowrance. T Lowrance led the CVAC in scoring in her first two seasons at Limestone. She poured in 471 points last season ranking her 7th on Limestone’s single season record list. She L averaged 18.8 points per game and notched a career high 33 points against North Greenville. In just two seasons Lowrance has accumulated 923 points, which places O her 9th all-time at Limestone. “She has been tremendous for us for two years and we expect her to be tremendous for two more years,” says Fox. Jada Blakely is another outstanding returning player in the O junior class. Blakely averaged 5 points and 2 assists per game in a season in which she played in 27 games and started 10. Coach Fox believes that “Jada gives us an athletic guard who can play three positions and score the ball. We are looking for Jada to have an improved junior campaign.” LaDovia Dukes is the lone sophomore on K the squad. She had a solid freshman year for the Saints. She scored 9.9 points and grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game. “I anticipate that Dukes can build on a strong freshman year and become an outstanding player in the CVAC,” commented Fox.

The Saints are happy to add much needed experience with four junior college transfers. Jodeana Pirtle, a 0 forward from Parkland College (Illinois), and a trio of players from Danville Area Community College (Illinois) are welcome additions to the 4 Limestone Saints. Melissa DeVore, Danielle Vieira, and Molly Williams led DACC to a 22-9 record in the - 2003-2004 season.

DeVore, the Conference Player of the Year in the CCCI, will come in and solidify the Saints at the point guard position. With the up- 0 tempo game the Saints play, the point guard position is very important and should be in good hands. Fox is “excited about the prospect of a playmaking point guard leading a talented bunch of scorers.” One of those scorers is Danielle Vieira. She is expected to come in and put points on the board for the Saints, after averaging 12 points per game for DACC last season. Coach Fox loves 5 her ability to score and believes she will be a tough match-up for opponents. “Her size and ability to make plays from inside and out give us the added scoring we are looking for.” Molly Williams, an undersized center at DACC, will continue to play that position for the Saints. Williams led Danville with almost 9 rebounds along with 8 points per game. Fox believes Williams will have a big impact on the Saints’ post game with her rebounding and her work ethic.

Jodeana Pirtle helped lead Parkland College to a sixth place finish in the NJCAA Division II O Tournament. “Pirtle brings a great shooting touch and the intangibles necessary for winning teams. She also brings intensity to the defensive end of the court.”

The 2004-2005 Lady Saints will feature three freshmen. Tiffany Jones was an outstanding player U at Greer High School (Greer, SC). The two-time team-MVP led GHS to a 28-1 record and an appearance in the Upperstate Finals in her senior year. Fox looks for Jones to make an impact in her debut season at Limestone. “Jones’ ability to handle the ball and defend full-court gives her the opportunity to make a major contribution as a freshman.” Shelly Robinson joins her sister Whitney in CVAC Basketball. Whitney currently plays for rival . Shelly T was a standout player at South Point High School (Belmont, NC). Her 1,217 career points ranks second all-time at SPHS, behind her sister’s mark of 1,613. Shelly also led her team to a 20 win season in her senior campaign. “I’m excited about her ability to make the 3- L point shot,” Fox says. “She hit 40% as a senior, and we struggled from that range last season. Her athletic ability and her strong shooting give her the O opportunity to be an impact player.” Monica Adams was a three-time All- Conference selection at Bessemer City High School (Kings Mountain, SC). Adams will provide the Lady Saints O with support in the low post. Her size and ability to rebound will give her a chance at playing time as a freshman.

This season the Lady Saints believe they can make an impact in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic K Conference. Expectations around the conference will be low after a 4-23 season; however, the team’s expectations are high. With a revamped roster featuring plenty of new faces and many student-athletes who are already accomplished at the collegiate level, Limestone hopes to compete for a conference championship.

LIMESTONE FACILITIES LIMESTONE COLLEGE

Limestone Physical Education Center

Limestone College made a major announcement in the summer of 2004. The College will build a new physical education center, expected to be completed early in the spring semester. The new facility will offer three classrooms, nine offices, locker rooms, Athletic Training Education facilities, a fitness center, and a wrestling practice facility.

Located on Thompson street near Limestone Springs, the facility will be the first new building on the Limestone campus since the Timken Center was dedicated 30 years ago. The Physical Education facility will give Limestone’s Athletic Training Education Program the necessary space to meet accreditation standards of the American Medical Association’s Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, which will allow Limestone students to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Examination.

In addition to the new Athletic Training facilities, the facility will also house a 3,900 square foot weight training facility which will be a great asset for Limestone’s approximately 350 varsity athletes as well as all other students, faculty, and staff. Limestone’s wrestling team, which begins competition in the 2004-2005 school year, will have a practice area in the new building, although the team will hold its matches in the Timken Center.

The Timken Center, built in 1976, is the center of the Limestone Athletic Department, housing athletic offices, athletic training facilities, and classrooms. The Timken Center also houses Limestone’s basketball arena, a 1,500 seat facility that hosts men’s and women’s basketball games as well as volleyball and wrestling matches. Limestone’s junior Olympic sized pool is also located inside the Timken Center. Home to the Lady Saints Swimming Team, the pool features an 800 square foot observation balcony coupled with 2,500 square feet of deck space.

LIMESTONE FACILITIES LIMESTONE COLLEGE

The recently remodeled Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center is one of the top facilities in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. The facility includes eight lighted tennis courts and houses tennis offices and a club house area for student-athletes.

Saints Field was given a face-lift this summer. Limestone’s game field for men’s and women’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s lacrosse was completely resurfaced and a full-size practice field was added immediately adjacent to it. In addition, the Saints enjoy the use of three other practice fields.

Limestone’s athletic facilities also include a baseball and softball field complex. Bob Prevatte Field plays home to the baseball team while Lady Saints Softball Field hosts Jimmy Martin’s squad.

ABOUT THE CAROLINAS-VIRGINIA ATHLETICS CONFERENCE

The Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference is a NCAA Division II athletic conference made up of 11 schools from North Carolina and South Carolina. These schools include: Anderson College, Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Erskine College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Each of the twelve CVAC sports has a season-ending tournament that leads to automatic NCAA qualification in Mens Basketball, Women's Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball and NCAA regional selection opportunities in Women's Cross Country, Men's Cross Country, Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Golf, Women's Tennis, Men's Tennis, and Baseball.

CVAC Commissioner Dr. Alan Patterson says this about the conference, "The Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference is recognized regionally and nationally as a premier NCAA Division II conference which champions scholarship athletics working in concert with student athletes committed to academic success."

The CVAC has roots in the Old North State Conference formed in 1938. The name changed to the Carolinas Conference with the first inclusion of South Carolina members, and in 1994 became the CVAC as Virginia membership was included and championship play was shifted to NCAA Division II.

Curtis Administration Building

Limestone College was established in 1845 by Dr. Thomas Curtis and his son, Dr. William Curtis, distinguished scholars born and educated in England. Limestone College was the first woman’s college in South Carolina and one of the first in the United States.

In the late 1960s, Limestone College became fully coeducational. The campus is a unique combination of history and progress, with nine of our campus buildings included on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1991, Limestone College has completed renovations of several of its historic campus structures: the Montgomery Classroom Building, Ebert Residence Hall, Carroll Fine Arts Building, Hamrick Hall of Science, Eunice Ford Residence Hall, and Dixie Lodge Student Center. While the College’s ties to the past are visible in the many historic structures, these renovated facilities now house the modern technology necessary to maintain Limestone’s reputation as an outstanding liberal arts college.
