Conference Carolinas Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletic conference made up of 12 teams from North and South Carolina. These teams include: Anderson University, , , Coker College, Con- verse College, , Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, , Queens University of Charlotte, and St. Andrews . Each of the seventeen Conference Carolinas sports has a season-ending tournament that leads to automatic NCAA qualification in Men’s Basket- ball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, and and NCAA regional and national selection opportunities in Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Golf, Men’s Golf, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Baseball, Men’s Track and Field, and Women’s Track and Field. Conference Commissioner Dr. Alan Patterson says this about the conference, “Conference Carolinas is recognized region- ally and nationally as a premier NCAA Division II conference which champions scholarship athletics working in concert with student athletes committed to academic success.” Conference Carolinas has roots in the Old North State Conference formed in 1938. The name changed to the Caroli- nas Conference with the first inclusion of South Carolina members, and in 1994 became the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference as Virginia membership was included and championship play was shifted to NCAA Division II. Since 2003, no conference schools have been located in Virginia. Since Virginia is no longer represented within the conference, a name change to “Conference Carolinas” was recommended and was implemented for the 2007-2008 academic year.

At Limestone College, the Athletics De- partment is another area that develops stu- dents’ minds, bodies, and spirits. The Saints athletics program offers students more than just the opportunity to win. The program’s flexibility, coupled with Limestone’s smaller student body, offers the student-athletes un- paralleled opportunities to participate in team sports. In fact, many students play two sports. Like the College itself, the Saints athlet- ics program has a rich history and has expe- rienced much success. Until 1997, Limestone competed for championships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Limestone gained membership in the National Collegiate Ath- letic Association’s (NCAA) Division II in 1991 and began competing for NCAA championships when it joined the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference in 1998. Today, 17 of Limestone’s athletic teams compete in the Conference Carolinas, while both swimming teams are affiliated with the Bluegrass Mountain Conference and wrestling competes as an independent. Limestone helped pave the way for collegiate la- crosse and swimming in the South. The Saints fielded South Carolina’s first collegiate lacrosse team in 1990. The swimming teams are the only NCAA Division II swimming programs in South Carolina and among the few in the two Carolinas. In the fall of 2009, Limestone will field the southernmost field hockey program in the with the addition of women’s field hockey to the Saints athletics program. Over the years, the Saints baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis teams have all been ranked on the national level. Twelve student-athletes have gone on to play professionally in their sport, with seven of those signing professional baseball contracts. The Saints baseball program was started by two-time Cy Young Award winner Gaylord Perry, a member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Additionally, over 100 Saints athletes have earned All-American honors and 20 have been named Academic All-Americans. The Saints have continued to improve each year. In 2006, the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams earned trips to the NCAA Division II semifinals and won conference tournament titles. Limestone College is an accredited, independent, coeducational, four-year liberal arts institution chartered by the state of South Car- olina. Limestone is a non-denominational Christian college. Our Dixie Lodge programs lead to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degree. Today, Limestone College enrolls approximately 750 students in its day program and approximately 2,700 in the Extended Campus, which includes various sites throughout South Carolina and Inter- net courses.
