However, the Saints believe they have enough talent and determination to prove 2 everyone wrong. By the season’s end, the Saints fully expect to be among the CVAC’s leaders. The Saints are coming off a solid 2004 campaign that saw 0 Limestone win 27 games, matching their highest win total since the 2000 season when they went 32-19. Several individuals had outstanding seasons for the Saints in 2004. Mitch House was awarded CVAC Player of the Week after cracking three home runs in one game and driving in ten in three games in February. 0 Melvin Digh and Kevin Pucetas each earned CVAC Pitcher of the Week honors for their performance. Darius Pullen capped an outstanding career by leading the 2004 squad in AVG (.347), H (74), 2B (17), HR 5 (18), RBI (60), TB (147), SLG (.690), and OBP (.393). For that performance Pullen was named 1st-team All-CVAC. Markell Williams also wrapped up his Collegiate career in 2004. Williams hit .314 with 10 home runs, and 23 RBI, while scoring 41 runs in his senior campaign. Without Pullen and Williams the 2005 Saints will miss two of their top sluggers, but the Saints return 4 players who hit over .300 last season. House is Limestone’s top returning slugger. The senior captain hit 13 HR’s last season and drove in 53 O runs while hitting at a .303 clip. Travis Clary is also back for his senior season and will join House as a team captain. Clary hit .318 in 2004, raising his career average to .301. He also ranked second on the team with 64 hits and 15 stolen bases. Richmond Lutz gives the Saints a trio of seniors in the lineup. Lutz set career highs in every offensive category as a junior including a .301 AVG and a team-best 18 stolen U bases. Add juniors Matt Craig (.323-1-18), David Wise (.287-7-23), Tyler Midgett (.254-4-21), and sophomore James Edwards (.280-6-18) to the mix, and the Saints have a very strong returning core at the plate. Limestone also has an outstanding core on the hill with a pitching staff that will be anchored by junior T nd Kevin Pucetas. Pucetas went 3-5 last season, but ranked 2 on the team with a 4.24 ERA, allowing just 35 earned runs in a team high 74.1 innings of work. Jason Gold will also be in the starting rotation this year. Gold is healthy again after red-shirting last season, and should be back to his form that earned a 7-2 record in 2003. Senior Devin Page, and junior transfer L Jamie Langford will also start, while sophomore Blake Haney, and junior transfer Joey Frericks give the Saints a pair of lefties in the rotation. O The bullpen will once again be led by junior southpaw Josh Cochran. Cochran set a Limestone record with 32 appearances in 2004 and led the team with a 3.61 ERA. After going 5-0 last season, Cochran is a perfect 7-0 in his career at Limestone and is within reach of Brandon O Moore’s record of 68 career appearances. Senior Drew Lovelace will also see action out of the pen. Lovelace recorded 3 saves last season and is just 3 shy of Limestone’s career record of 10. K With a solid returning core and several key newcomers, Head Coach Chico Lombardo believes his Saints have been underestimated and are primed for a strong 2005 campaign. “It’s going to be about pitching and defense,” Lombardo said. “We’ll let the offense take care of itself.” 2 SAINTS BASEBALL IN MEMORY OF TOM PETTIT LIMESTONE COLLEGE In December, the Limestone College Athletic Department, and in particular the Limestone Baseball T team, suffered a great loss with the passing of Mr. Tom Pettit. Mr. Pettit was a tremendous supporter of Limestone College and the Saints have dedicated the 2005 season to his memory. O Every time a ball was in play on the campus, Mr. Pettit could be found keeping a watchful eye. He was a tremendous fan, supporter, and friend to Limestone M Athletics. In late 1980’s, Limestone created a Sportsmanship Award in honor of Mr. Pettit. For nearly 20 years, the Tom Pettit Sportsmanship Award has been given to the male and female athletes who best exemplified qualities of good sportsmanship on and off the field. Limestone’s Caps will bear the P initials TP in memorial to Tom Pettit. While Mr. Pettit was heavily involved in all 17 sports at Limestone, his loss will be felt most by the baseball program. For many years, “Mr. Tom” traveled with the Saints on the team bus and rarely missed a game at home or on the road. E “I don’t know that Limestone College has ever had a more loyal supporter than Tom Pettit,” said Athletic Director Larry Epperly. “He was one of the few people to be T inducted into the Hall of Fame based solely on his support of the College.” Limestone College inducted Mr. Pettit into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. “It goes deeper than that,” Epperly continued. T “He had a personal relationship with each of our coaches. He ate lunch with us every day, and he attended nearly every event. He loved our kids, I and he loved athletics. He will be deeply missed.” Head Coach Chico Lombardo says he will miss T Mr. Pettit’s positive attitude. “Tom Pettit was such a loyal fan who was always happy to be with the guys whether we were at home or on the - road,” said Coach Lombardo. “He never had a bad word to say about any of our guys. No Died matter what, he always had something positive to 12/5/04 say.” Mr. Pettit presents the 2004 Pettit Award to Katie Matheis 3 SAINTS BASEBALL 2005 ROSTER LIMESTONE COLLEGE SAINTS BY POSITION Pitchers (11): Tyler Anderson, Josh Cochran, Greg Davis, Joey Frerichs, Jason Gold, Blake Haney, Jamie Langford, Drew Lovelace, Devin Page, Daniel Phillips, Kevin Pucetas: Catchers (3): B.J.
