After surviving to play on the CVAC tournament’s final day last season, 2 Limestone returns an excellent core to go with a strong recruiting class. In 2004 the Saints finished the regular season with a 23-25 0 record. An 11-17 conference record was good for the #4 seed entering the Conference Tournament. The Saints played an outstanding tournament, but were unable to overcome the CVAC’s Player of the Year, St. Andrews’ Tina Gonsalves. 0 In their first game of the tourney, Limestone met St. Andrews for an eleven-inning marathon. Both teams had chances to win, but St. Andrews capitalized with an 5 eleventh inning homer that put the Saints in the position of needing three wins on Saturday to survive in the tournament. Limestone would do just that, defeating Barton 10-1, Pfeiffer 10-2, and Queens 5-4 in a nine-inning affair. That outstanding offensive day put Limestone in the semifinals on Sunday. Unfortunately the Lady Saints once again ran into Gonsalves and the St. Andrews Knights. Gonsalves hurled a 3-hitter and the Knights prevailed 6-1. The 2005 Saints return an excellent core and were picked 3rd in the CVAC’s Preseason Coaches’ O Poll, their highest preseason ranking since joining the CVAC. The Saints’ previous high was 4th in 2001. Limestone returns two of the CVAC’s premier hitters in Amy Yates and Keisha Powell. Both sluggers ranked among the league’s leaders in Avg, HR, and RBI last season. Yates hit .403 with 8 HR and 26 RBI and was successful on 18-of-18 stolen base attempts, earning 1st-team All- U CVAC honors. She was also named to the CVAC’s All-Tournament team after hitting .429-3-5 in five games. Powell led the league with 11 HR and 45 RBI while hitting for a .336 average. Powell also brings a powerful presence on the mound. She recorded 17 wins in 2004 to go with a 2.93 ERA and 99K’s. Coutney Silva is also back for her senior year and will anchor the Saints outfield. T Silva ranked 5th on the squad last year with 36 hits and 3rd with 23 runs scored. Also returning from last year are a pair of sophomores in Lauren Miceli (.348-5-34) and pitcher Elizabeth Hawkins (6-9, 4.01 ERA, 41K). Both Miceli and Hawkins are coming off outstanding freshman campaigns. Miceli earned 2nd-team All-CVAC honors for her performance, while L Hawkins went 2-1 in the CVAC Tournament with a 1.33 ERA and 7Ks. Among the team’s newcomers, catcher Jessica Brown, third baseman Brittany Owen, second baseman Heidi O Odom, and first basemen Heather Wood and Haley Rape are all expected to compete for starting positions in the infield. The Lady Saints have also brought in Lindsay Gladden and Keisha Thompson to solidify the outfield, as well as Samantha Weaver to bolster the pitching staff. O The 2005 Saints will feature plenty of youth, but will also have tremendous leadership from their upperclassmen. Limestone hopes that their freshmen K will develop over the course of the season and excel down the stretch and in the CVAC Tournament. The Lady Saints have all the pieces to put together an outstanding season. 3 SAINTS SOFTBALL 2005 ROSTER LIMESTONE COLLEGE SAINTS BY POSITION Pitchers (3): Elizabeth Hawkins, Keisha Powell, Samantha Weaver: Catchers (1): Jessica Brown: Infielders (7): Kristi Ellenberger, Heidi Odom, Brittany Owen, Haley Rape, Amy Yates, Heather Wood, Nicole Woodberry: Outfielders (6): Brittany Dooley, Lindsay Gladden, Melissa Hampson, Lauren Miceli, Courtney Silva, Keisha Thompson. Grover's Grill The 43rd Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame Inductee!! Grover Bullin, PGA, was the Golf Professional here at Wilson Country Club from 1947 to 1989. Not only did he help shape what we all love about this great Club, but he is also a cornerstone of developing the game of golf in Eastern North Carolina. Grover was known for his selfless approach to the game and his work to cultivate programs for junior and women golfers. Following his retirement from Wilson Country Club, Bullin continued to grow the game by teaching lessons for the Wilson County Parks and Recreation Department, and developed fundraisers for underprivileged youth in the area. Grover Bullin was voted Carolinas PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 1962. He served on the CPGA Board of Directors from 1964-1966. Wilson Country Club gives a Golf Scholarship at Barton College annually in his name. The Grover Bullin Endowed Scholarship was established in 1989, at the time of his retirement, and is used in place of institutional aid to a member of the golf team.
