Frank Szymanski named Executive Director. Charter members: University of Baltimore, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Long Island University, Loyola College, Marist College, Robert Morris College, St. Francis (NY) College, St. N Francis (PA) College, Siena College, Towson State University, Wagner College. E 1982-83: Towson State University leaves the Conference for the East Coast Conference. Monmouth College announces in May,1983 it will join the Conference for the 1985-86 season. C 1983-84: University of Baltimore drops athletics and leaves the Conference. 1985-86: Monmouth College joins the Conference. Men's soccer, golf and tennis are added as championship sports with soccer receiving an automatic R bid to the NCAA Tournament. Men's basketball player Terrance Bailey of Wagner College leads the nation in scoring with 854 points and a 29.4 ppg. average. 1986-87: Baseball, women's basketball, men's and women's cross country and softball are added as championship sports. e 1987-88: Chris Monasch named first full-time Commissioner on June 16, 1987, replacing executive director Frank Szymanski. George Drozin named c first full-time Assistant Commissioner for public relations. Edgar Cartotto hired as first full-time Supervisor of men's and women's basketball officials. Men's indoor track, women's tennis and volleyball are added as championship sports. Rik Smits of Marist College is the second overall pick of the 1988 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers. Mount St. Mary's College's Peter Rono wins 1988 Olympic 1,500-meter gold medal. r 1988-89: ECAC Metro renamed Northeast Conference on August 1, 1988, after gaining autonomy from the ECAC. Bob Steitz named first full-time Associate d Commissioner for compliance and championships on August 1, 1988. Ray Cella named Assistant Commissioner for communications on August 1, 1988. League office moves to Woodbridge, NJ in September, 1988. Loyola College announces in September 1988 it will leave the Conference at the end of the season. Mount St. Mary's College announces on December 8, 1988, it will join the Conference for the 1990-91 season. The University of Akron announces on February 22, 1989 it will join the Conference for the 1990-91 season. Conference institutes first Academic Awards program. The University of Akron withdraws from the Conference in June, 1989 for the Associaton of Mid-Continent Universities. Dave Calloway of Monmouth College leads the nation in B three-point field goal percentage at .585 (48-of-82). o 1989-90: Mount St. Mary's College joins the Conference. Loyola College leaves the Conference for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Men's soccer post-season tournament is added. Women's volleyball is discontinued as a championship sport, effective after the 1989 championship, due to lack of o participation on the part of the membership. On October 18, 1989, the Conference files a breach of contract lawsuit against the University of Akron. Marist College announces on February 6, 1990, that it will not leave the Conference for the East Coast Conference as indicated in December 1988. Men's and k women's outdoor track and women's indoor track added as championship sports for the 1990-91 season. Men's soccer loses automatic bid. Long Island University softball player Natalie Jufer picked as a GTE Academic All-American. 1990-91: David Siroty named Assistant Commissioner for public relations on October 9, 1990 replacing Ray Cella who left for the Atlantic 10 Conference. Mike Marcil named Associate Commissioner for compliance and championships on December 19, 1990 replacing Bob Steitz who left for the Atlantic 10 Conference. Rik Smits, formerly of Marist College, named men's basketball Player of the Decade. The 1986-87 Marist Red Foxes named NEC Team of the Decade. Mount St. Mary's head coach Jim Phelan nominated for the Basketball Hall of Fame. St. Francis (PA) men's basketball player Mike Iuzzolino named GTE Academic All-American of the Year. Rider College announces on May 17, 1991 it will join the Conference for the 1992-93 season. Long Island University softball player Natalie Jufer picked as a GTE Academic All-American. Monmouth College men's basketball player Alex Blackwell becomes the first Conference player to ever appear on a United States men's basketball national team. He won a gold medal at the World University Games. The Ohio Court of Claims in Columbus, OH sides with Northeast Conference in breach of contract dispute with University of Akron. Monmouth College president Dr. Samuel H. Magill named to the NCAA President's Commission. 1991-92: The Ohio Court of Claims in Columbus, OH approves on September 23, 1991 a monetary settlement on the damage portion of the Northeast Conference's dispute with the University of Akron. Northeast Conference men's basketball players write team previews for Conference's men's basketball media guide. Monmouth College men's basketball team participates in Pre-Season NIT. Commissioner Chris Monasch is selected to the NCAA Council for a four-year term on January 14, 1992. Steve Hurlbut named Associate Commissioner of compliance and championships on February 6, 1992 replacing Mike Marcil who left for the NCAA. Denise Gormley is promoted on May 5, 1992 to full-time status as Assistant for Public Relations, Championships and Compliance.     Sports News Roundup Nov. 28 Cuban Delegation Results in Veracruz Cuba is still chasing Mexico in the medal standings of the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz 2014. As of Thursday, Mexico was leading the games so far with 96 gold, 76 silver and 93 bronze medals, followed by the Cuban delegation with 88-56-53 and Colombia 61-62-67. It is expected the Cuban delegation ends on top of the final standings as more gold medals are still pending. Karateist Listmar Licea opened Thursday's karate medal standing after winning bronze in the 60kg category. Licea had won twice and defeated once in the qualifying phase. Thursday's events was considered brilliant by the president of the Cuban Athletics Federation, Alberto Juantorena. The Cuban track and field added five gold on Thursday to the medal standings and will seek to win more on Friday at Heriberto Jara Corona stadium in Veracruz. “It has been a stimulating performance which suggests higher results at the end, a gift for our people and for the beautiful sports we enjoy,” stated Juantorena, two-time Olympic champ in Montreal 1976. Track and field's heptathlon event was marked by a record for the games set by heptathlonist Yorgelis Rodríguez with 5, 984 points after leading four events included in a specialty she already earned a title and a runner-up championship at the youth world cup. Teammate Yusleidys Mendieta won silver with 5, 813 points and Puerto Rican Alysbeth Félix bronze with 5, 721. NCAA PRE-CHAMPIONSHIP MANUAL 1 GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES Section 1 • Introduction During the 2019-20 academic year, the Association will sponsor 90 national championships – 42 for men, 45 for women, and three for both men and women. Of the men’s championships, three are National Collegiate Championships, 13 are Division I championships, 12 are Division II championships and 14 are Division III championships. Of the women’s championships, six are National Collegiate Championships, 12 are Division I championships, 13 are Division II championships and 14 are Division III championships. The combined men’s and women’s championships are National Collegiate Championships. The Pre-Championship Manual will serve as a resource for institutions to prepare for the championship.
