FFiiqqhh ((LLaawwss)) Book 7 Lesson 1 Saláh Types of Wājib Salāh There are six types of wājib salāh: 1. The Five Daily Salāh. 2. Salāt al-Ayāt. 3. Salāt al-Mayyit (taught in Book 10). 4. Two Rak’ah Salāh after Wājib Tawāf of Ka’bah (taught in Book 10). 5. Compensation (qadā) salāh of a dead man that is wājib on the eldest son. 6. Salāh that becomes wājib due to an oath (nadhr, ‘ahd, qasam) or if one is paid to pray the qadā for someone deceased (as niyābah). Note: Salāt al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) is counted as part of the five daily prayers because it is prayed instead of Salāt adh-Dhuhr on Fridays. Mustahab (nāfila) prayers are studied in Book 9. The importance of salāh and not to take it lightly can be reviewed from Book 5 (Akhlāq Lesson 7). The Compensatory Prayer (Salāt al-Qadā) Qadā salāh is performed in compensation for a salāh that has not been performed during its proper time. It is wājib to make up all those prayers that have been missed for whatever reason, except for bāligha women who are excused from salāh at certain times of the month (which will be taught to the girls separately). Those who suffer from mental illness do not have to pray salāh. Also, a non-Muslim who becomes a Muslim does not have to pay qadā for the time before he or she became a Muslim. But if a Muslim loses his faith for a duration and then returns to Islām, he or she must make up for all the missed prayers. -

Divine Link – Fiqh of Salah Shaykh Yaser Birjas 2 Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim 01 | Introduction Five days before the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, he was on his deathbed. When you are on your deathbed and talk, you will be saying the most important things in your life. These are the last moments of you life. Think about that time and imagine that you were told that you would be dying in a few days. As you talk to people, what message would you deliver to people? It would be the most important things to you. The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) five days before he passed away was suffering from the pains of death, and he was suffering for more than fourteen days. One of the companions came and saw him (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) aching so much. He said, “Ya Rasulullah, you are suffering so much pain. Why is that?” He (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “I suffer double the pain any of you will suffer.” He said, “Is it because you are getting double reward?” He (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “I hope so.” At that time, he (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) would feel the pain and cover his face, and then when it would stop, he would uncover his face and say, “La ilaha ilAllah. Death has its agonies and pains.” He used to fall unconscious and recover and fall unconscious and recover. -

Each position involves the movement of different parts of the human body in ways that encourage health and wellbeing. Islam and Physiotherapy It is a religious obligation to take care of our health. Our bodies and minds are in trust from Allah (God) and this means responsibilities for each of us ourselves. After faith, health and wellbeing are understood to be the greatest blessings to have been given to people and as such they are accountable to Allah. Physiotherapy aims to improve people’s daily life through rehabilitation. Physical rehabilitation involves doing a regular, gentle stretch and strengthen movement programme. This is very important and helps to decrease the stiffness in joints and muscles. It also increases the strength of the muscles, in order to improve physical fitness. This is necessary to be able to return to activities such as, cooking, housework, prayers (Salah) and work. What if I can’t pray in these positions due to my pain? Islam allows flexibility in the positions of prayer during illness. As Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “Pray while standing and if you can’t, pray while sitting and if you cannot do even that, then pray lying on your side”. -

The main purpose of this list is to disambiguate multiple spellings, to make note of spellings no longer in use for these concepts, to define the concept in one or two lines, to make it easy for one to find and pin down specific concepts, and to provide a guide to unique concepts of Islam all in one place. Separating concepts in Islam from concepts specific to Arab culture, or from the language itself, can be difficult. Many Arabic concepts have an Arabic secular meaning as well as an Islamic meaning. One example is the concept of dawah. Arabic, like all languages, contains words whose meanings differ across various contexts. The word Islam is itself a good example. Arabic is written in its own alphabet, with letters, symbols, and orthographic conventions that do not have exact equivalents in the Latin alphabet (see Arabic alphabet). The following list contains transliterations of Arabic terms and phrases; variations exist, e.g. din instead of deen and aqidah instead of aqeedah. A'maal of the Day of A'rafah
A’MAAL FOR THE DAY OF ARAFAH The Day of Arafah Perhaps one of the most ‗sacred‘ days in the Islamic calendar - is the day of Arafah, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah – a time and place where Muslims all over the world congregate to worship Allah and to seek nearness to Him. Those performing the rites of the Hajj spend this day in prayer, contemplation and worship of the Divine on the dry desert of Arafah. However, those of us who have not been blessed with the opportunity to be on the plains need not despair of His Mercy as He is ever-Present. The land of Arafah is mentioned in the Qur'an where He says, ―Then when you stream out of Arafat remember God at the Holy Mashar, and remember Him as He has guided you, and earlier you were indeed among the astray. Then stream out from where the people stream out, and plead to God for forgiveness; indeed God is all-forgiving, all-merciful.‖ (2:198-199) Imam Jaffer al Sadiq (AS) said of those staying at Arafat as part of their hajj rites: ―For a believing man of any village who stays in Arafah, Allah (SWT) will forgive all the believing people of that village, and for a single man of a believing family who stays in Arafah, Allah (SWT) will forgive all the believing members of that family." What is the significance of not only the land of Arafah but also this sacred time? We are told that Arafah is when we need to focus all of our concentration on supplication, invocation and Tawassul – that is seeking an intermediary to Allah. -

Amīn. - Mufti Ebrahim Desai BEFORE DEATH The person on his deathbed should be turned to his right side facing the Qiblah . It is also permissible to lie him on his back and to raise his head slightly to face the Qiblah . The words of Shahadah should be proclaimed near him for him to hear and thus indirectly prompt him to proclaim it too. This is called Talqin. However, he should not be instructed and compelled to recite it . It is Mustahab (desirable) for the deceased`s close relatives, friends and neighbours to be present to advise him on his last will, assist him in encountering this critical moment and read Surah Yasin and Surah Ra`d onto him . AFTER DEATH It is Fardh Kifayah to bathe, to enshroud, to observe the Janazah Salah of, and bury the deceased . When he passes away, his eyes should be shut and jaws should be closed using a band fastened from the lower chin to the top of the head . -

اد د ارن، واة وام اوث ر ن، وھدً س أن. ًة وً دان إ وم ادن، وآ و ون م ن، وم ً راً، أ د .: Qadha-ul-Fawa’it - The Performing of Missed Prayers (Salah) ب ء اا : ت ه ز ء ل رول وم : إذا رد أدم ن اة أول ّ إذا ذرھ ن ّزول ول : أم اة ذرى ( م رم ادث 1569) Allah has stated in the Qur’an: “Perform the Prayer (Salah). Verily, prayer is enjoined on the believers at prescribed times.” (Surah An Nisa, 4:103) If for any reason, other than due to fear for one’s life, unintentional oversleeping or forgetfulness, a person was to fail in performing the stipulated prayer at its proper time, they would be guilty of committing a major sin. In the first three generations (Salaf us Saliheen) of Islam, the prayer was never missed due to neglect or laziness. The prayer was never missed intentionally. If after reaching the age of puberty, if any prayers have been missed, it is compulsory to perform them. The obligation of the prayer will remain, even after Repentance (Tawbah), for missed prayers. Any Farad missed Salah (prayers) it should then be performed and accounted for, as quickly as possible through Qadha Salah. (Khutabhaat, Fatawa Rashidia p352) ا ا ا ر ﷲ : واا وب ء اا ( ر ا 464646) Allama Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman said that ‘All people of knowledge from the Ummah regard the performing of missed Salah as Wajib and are united upon this. This is regarded as Ijma’ (Rahamatul Umma p46) It is related from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet stated: ‘Whosoever joins 2 prayers together (for example if someone was to read Zohar and Asr together) without a valid reason, he has passed through one of the doors from among the doors leading to Major sin.’ (Sunan Tirmidi v1, p48, Mustadarak Hakim v1, p275) The Prophet stated: ‘If the prayer of any person is missed, it is as if he has lost his family, wealth, and property in an instance.’ (Sahih Ibn Hiban, Musnad Ahmad) Women who missed prayers in the state of menstruation, do not need to perform Qadha Salah for these missed prayers.
