FFiiqqhh ((LLaawwss)) Book 7 Lesson 1 Saláh Types of Wājib Salāh There are six types of wājib salāh: 1. The Five Daily Salāh. 2. Salāt al-Ayāt. 3. Salāt al-Mayyit (taught in Book 10). 4. Two Rak’ah Salāh after Wājib Tawāf of Ka’bah (taught in Book 10). 5. Compensation (qadā) salāh of a dead man that is wājib on the eldest son. 6. Salāh that becomes wājib due to an oath (nadhr, ‘ahd, qasam) or if one is paid to pray the qadā for someone deceased (as niyābah). Note: Salāt al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) is counted as part of the five daily prayers because it is prayed instead of Salāt adh-Dhuhr on Fridays. Mustahab (nāfila) prayers are studied in Book 9. The importance of salāh and not to take it lightly can be reviewed from Book 5 (Akhlāq Lesson 7). The Compensatory Prayer (Salāt al-Qadā) Qadā salāh is performed in compensation for a salāh that has not been performed during its proper time. It is wājib to make up all those prayers that have been missed for whatever reason, except for bāligha women who are excused from salāh at certain times of the month (which will be taught to the girls separately). Those who suffer from mental illness do not have to pray salāh. Also, a non-Muslim who becomes a Muslim does not have to pay qadā for the time before he or she became a Muslim. But if a Muslim loses his faith for a duration and then returns to Islām, he or she must make up for all the missed prayers. -

It is An Introduction to adhere to the Path of the Messenger (sallal- lahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and of the True Believers (as- Salaf us-Salih). As-Salaf is a collective term referring to to the Salafi the Pious Pioneers in Islam and all those who follow in their footsteps in belief, actions and morals. Allah said, “Whoever con- tends with and contradicts the Messenger after guidance has been clearly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that of the Faith- Da’wah ful Believers, We shall leave him in the Path he has chosen and land him in Hell, what an evil destination! [An Nisa 4:115]. Shaikh ul-lslam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) com- mented on this ayah: “All who contradict and oppose the Messenger (S), after the right path has been clearly shown to them, have followed other than the Path of the Believers. And all who follow other than the Path of the Believers have contradicted and opposed the Messenger (S). If one thinks that he is mistaken in following the Path of the Faithful Believers, he is in the same position as one who thinks that he is mistaken in following the Messenger (S).” Who are the “Salaf ?” As-Salaf us-Salih (or briefly: the Salaf) refers to the first and best three generations of Muslims. They are the Companions (Sahabah) of the Prophet (S), their immediate followers (Tabiun), and the followers of the Tabi’in. -

On the Qur'anic Accusation of Scriptural Falsification (tahrîf) and Christian Anti-Jewish Polemic GABRIEL SAID REYNOLDS UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME According to the fully articulated salvation history of Islam, Moses and Jesus (like all prophets) were Muslims. Moses received an Islamic scripture, the Torah {tawrät), as did Jesus, the Gospel (injU). Their communities, however, suppressed their religion and altered their scriptures. Accordingly, a canonical h^dlth has the Prophet Muhammad declare: O community of Muslims, how is it that you seek wisdom from the People of the Book? Your book, brought down upon His Prophet—blessings and peace of God upon him—is the latest report about God. You read a Book that has not been distorted, but the People of the Book, as God related to you, exchanged that which God wrote [for something else], changing the book with their hands. ' This hcidïth refiects the idea found frequently among Muslim scholars, usually described with the term tahrîf, that the Bible has been literally altered. The same idea lies behind Yâqût's (d. 626/1229) attribution of a quotation on Jerusalem to a Jewish convert to Islam from Banü Qurayza "who possessed a copy of the uncorrupted Torah." •^ Muslim scholars also accuse Jews and Christians of misinterpreting the Bible by hiding, ignoring, or misreading it, and on occasion they describe such misinterpretation as tahrîf as well. Accordingly, in scholarly treatments of the subject a comparison is sometimes made between tahrîf al-nass, alteration of the text of scripture, and tahrîf al-ma'anî, misinterpre- tation of scripture. Yet Muslim scholars who accuse Jews and Christians of misinterpreta- tion do not mean to imply thereby that the Bible has not been altered. -

Self-identified ‘Salafis’, with their ideological roots in anti-liberal strands of twentieth-century modernist Islam, do commonly view Sufis as heretics propagating practices wrongly introduced into Islam centuries after the time of the pious ancestors (the Salaf). Yet reformist zeal that fixes on the singular importance of the Salaf (particularly the Prophet Muhammad and his principal companions) as models for correct piety can also be found amongst Sufis. This paper calls attention to the Salafist colouration of Sufism in two areas of popular culture: television preaching and the popular religious ‘how-to’ books and DVDs that make the preachers’ messages available for purchase. It reprises the teachings of two of the best known Indonesian Muslim televangelists, ‘Hamka’ (b. 1908,d.1981) and M. Arifin Ilham (b. 1969), both of whom also happen to be champions of Sufism, and analyses the different rhetorical uses each has made of references to the ‘Salaf’ and the notion of ‘Salafist’ Islam. Key words: rational urgency, scientific ijtihad, contemporary transaction. Pendahuluan Era globalisasi (the age of globalization), dalam beberapa literatur dinyatakan bermula pada dekade 1990‐an.1 Era ini ditandai, diantaranya dengan adanya fenomena penting dalam bidang ekonomi. Kegiatan ekonomi dunia tidak hanya dibatasi oleh faktor batas geografi, bahasa, budaya dan ideologi, akan tetapi lebih karena faktor saling membutuh‐kan dan saling bergantung satu sama lain.2 Dunia menjadi seakan‐akan tidak ada batas, terutama karena perkembangan teknologi informasi yang begitu pesat.
