Fiqh-Of-Salah-Notes ﺑِ ﺴْ ﻢِ اﻟﻠﱠـﻪِ اﻟﺮﱠﺣْﻤَـٰ ﻦِ اﻟﺮﱠﺣِﻴﻢِ Indeed all praise is due to Allah (swt). We praise him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness and we seek refuge with Him from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah (swt) guides, none can misguide and whomsoever Allah (swt) leaves to stray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship save Allah (swt), the One who has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (saw) is His servant and Messenger. The best speech is the speech of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (saw). The worst of all matters are those newly introduced in the religion. Every newly introduced matter is an innovation and every innovation is going astray. All going astray leads to Hellfire. We ask Allah (swt) that he make this action sincerely for Him, as all good contained in these notes is from Him, and we ask Allah (swt) to forgive us for any errors as they are all from us. Please use these notes to complement your personal notes and not to supplement them Jazakum Allahu Khairan, Scribe Team TABLE OF CONTENTS The Definition of Salah ........................................................................................................................................... 4 The Ruling of Salah .................................................................................................................................................. 4 The Excellence of Salah .......................................................................................................................................... 5 The Benefits of Salah ............................................................................................................................................... 7 The Accountability for Salah ................................................................................................................................ 7 The Ruling on Abandoning the Salah ............................................................................................................... 8 The History of Salah .............................................................................................................................................. 10 How to Study Fiqh & The Issue of Taqlid – not on exam enjoy reading.......................................... 14 The Times of Salah ................................................................................................................................................ 14 The Adhan & Iqamah ............................................................................................................................................ 20 The Prayer ................................................................................................................................................................ 25 Arkan (Integrals) of Salah .................................................................................................................................. 28 WAJIBAT (OBLIGATORY ACTS) OF SALAH ................................................................................................. 34 SUNAN (RECOMMENDED ACTS) OF SALAH .............................................................................................. 34 MAKRUH (ABONIMABLE) ACTS IN SALAH ................................................................................................ 36 MUBAH (PERMISSIBLE) ACTS IN SALAH .................................................................................................... 37 THE ETIQUETTE OF SALAH .............................................................................................................................. 37 Salat’l‐Musafir (The Prayer of Traveler) ...................................................................................................... 41 Dealing with Errors in Salah ............................................................................................................................. 44 Making Up Missed Salah: Part 1....................................................................................................................... 47 Praying in Congregation ..................................................................................................................................... 48 Imam and Ma’mum ............................................................................................................................................... 50 Making Up for Missed Salah: Part 2 ‐ The Ma’mum as the latecomer (Masbuq) ......................... 52 Salat’l‐Nafilah (Superogatory Salah) ............................................................................................................. 54 Forms of Nafl Salah ............................................................................................................................................... 55 Other Congregational Prayers .......................................................................................................................... 58 INTRODUCTION THE DEFINITION OF SALAH 1. Du’a In Arabic, Salah literally means, “to supplicate, to petition, to pray for someone.” “And pray for them, for your prayers are a comfort for them.” [alTawbah, 103] Salah in this ayah, means to make du’a. 2. Blessing, Forgiveness, Mercy. “Allah and His angels bless the Prophet. O You who believe! Bless him and salute him with a worthy salutation!”[AlAhzab,56] 3. A Synagogue The term salawat means the place for Salah 4. Other Meanings Some linguist say that it also means the middle of the back. The Legal Technical Definition – and the most important definition: “The worship of Allah with a particular set of statements and actions that begin with the takbir (Allahu Akbar) and end with the taslim (Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah).” THE RULING OF SALAH The prayer is an individual obligation based on evidence from the Qur’an, the Sunnah and Ijma’ (consensus of the Muslim Scholars). Fardul Ayn – Individual obligation, Allah (swt) looks at person and not the action Fardul Kifayah – Communal obligation, Allah (swt) looks at the action Salah is an obligation and “known by necessity in the religion”. It is amongst the small number of things that a Muslim will be held accountable for that ignorance will not excuse as it’s “known by necessity”. THE EXCELLENCE OF SALAH Salah has the following virtues: 1. It is the main pillar of Islam. Mu’adh ibn Jabal narrated the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “The actual pillar is salah, and the uppermost subject is jihad.” [Tirmidhi] If one of the pillars of a structure is removed, then the structure becomes shaky. Regardless of how much you try 2. It is the foremost obligation after declaration of faith. Ibn 'Umar narrated the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): To testify that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle; to offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly; to pay Zakat , to perform Hajj, and to observe fast during the month of Ramadan.” [Bukhari, 7] When Mu’adh ibn Jabal was sent to Yemen, the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) told him that after shahadah, the people need to be told about the salah. 3. It was given to the Prophet (SAW) directly by Allah without any intermediaries. 4. It was given to the Prophet (SAW) on the greatest night he ever experienced (al‐Isra wa al‐Miraj). 5. It was given over to the Muslims at the highest point that any human can ever reach (Sidratul Muntaha). 6. It was obligated as fifty prayers and then later reduced to five prayers, with the reward of fifty remaining. Allah (swt) made the Prophet (saw) go through the experience of asking for the decrease in number of prayers, in order for the Prophet (saw) to truly appreciate and to signify how great this action is to Allah. 7. It is the only daily continual act of worship we as Muslims have, despite our situation. 8. It is the best of actions. Some of the Sahabah reported that whenever they prepared to stand for the Salah, they would turn pale and become anxious. When asked why he was that way, one of the Sahabah replied: “Don’t you know who I will be standing before?” if you believe that Allah (subhanahu wa‐ta’ala) is watching over you, then you will not offer something cheap, but you will offer the best of what you have. 9. It is the first thing that the servant of Allah will be judged upon on the Day of Judgment. “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And If it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad.” [AtTabarani] 10. It was the only obligation from the five pillars to be obligated in Makkah upon the Muslims at the very beginning of Islam. 11. It has been given its own public call each time: the Adhan. The only ibaadah that has a regular reminder is Salah. Every Muslim tries his best to keep aware of the time of the salawat. There is a public reminder five times a day. One of the significances of making the adhan public is to ensure that praise of Allah (subhanahu wa‐ta’aîa) is made. 12. It is the defining characteristic of the Muslim. Its abandonment leads a person to shirk and kufr. 13. It expiates our sins. The minor sins (sagha’ir) committed between each prayer are cleansed at the next prayer. Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “The similitude of five prayers is like an overflowing river passing

  • Fiqh Diniyat Book
FFiiqqhh ((LLaawwss)) Book 7 Lesson 1 Saláh Types of Wājib Salāh There are six types of wājib salāh: 1. The Five Daily Salāh. 2. Salāt al-Ayāt. 3. Salāt al-Mayyit (taught in Book 10). 4. Two Rak’ah Salāh after Wājib Tawāf of Ka’bah (taught in Book 10). 5. Compensation (qadā) salāh of a dead man that is wājib on the eldest son. 6. Salāh that becomes wājib due to an oath (nadhr, ‘ahd, qasam) or if one is paid to pray the qadā for someone deceased (as niyābah). Note: Salāt al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) is counted as part of the five daily prayers because it is prayed instead of Salāt adh-Dhuhr on Fridays. Mustahab (nāfila) prayers are studied in Book 9. The importance of salāh and not to take it lightly can be reviewed from Book 5 (Akhlāq Lesson 7). The Compensatory Prayer (Salāt al-Qadā) Qadā salāh is performed in compensation for a salāh that has not been performed during its proper time. It is wājib to make up all those prayers that have been missed for whatever reason, except for bāligha women who are excused from salāh at certain times of the month (which will be taught to the girls separately). Those who suffer from mental illness do not have to pray salāh. Also, a non-Muslim who becomes a Muslim does not have to pay qadā for the time before he or she became a Muslim. But if a Muslim loses his faith for a duration and then returns to Islām, he or she must make up for all the missed prayers.
