The Porsche 911
The Porsche 911 The Porsche 911 has been regarded as an automotive icon and sports car par excellence for over five decades. It has been inspiring car enthusiasts the world over since its debut as the 901 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in 1963. Today it is considered the quintessential sports car, the benchmark for all others. The 911 is also the central point of reference for all other Porsche series. Every Porsche is the sportiest car in its category, and each one carries a piece of the 911 philosophy. The model line has been continually enhanced since its debut in 1963. However, the unique character of the model, renamed 911 in 1964, has always been preserved. Now, the modern classic has reached a new milestone: since 1963, more than one million units of the 911 have been produced in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen. This might sound a lot, but in reality it is very little: many premium manufacturers produce more than twice as many vehicles in a single year. In other words, the Porsche 911 was, is and shall remain an exclusive sports car. The distinctive character of the 911 is also reflected in its customer base. Numerous well-known artists, actors, fashion designers, sportsmen/women and entrepreneurs throughout the world have become enthusiastic 911 drivers, some of whom have remained faithful to the sports car series for many decades. And the Porsche 911 has also made many appearances in films and on TV. As leading actor and co-producer, Steve McQueen paid a resounding tribute to the 911 in his 1970 film masterpiece “Le Mans”. -

Ferdinand Anton Ernst (Ferry) Porsche in March of 1998 meant bidding farewell to one of the last greats of automotive history. Under his leadership in 1948, the first sports car with the name of Porsche appeared, and for decades he strongly determined the course of the company, including 1958 Ferry Porsche in the assembly hall of Plant 2 in Zuffenhausen, advocating its independence. Erwin Komenda (* 6. April 1904 in Jauern am Semmering NÖ, † 22. Au- gust 1966 Weyer an der Enns OÖ) war ein österreichischer Automobilde- signer. Seine Jugend verbrachte er im oberösterreichischen Markt Weyer an der Enns nahe der Stadt Steyr. Nach dem Abschluss der Technischen Lehr- anstalt für Eisen- und Stahlbearbeitung in Steyr besuchte er einen Wa- genbaukurs am Technologischen Gewerbemuseum in Wien bei dem re- nommierten Innungsvorstand der Wiener Wagenbauer, der mit seinem Buch "Der Wagen- und Automobilkarosseriebauer" mit neuartigen Kon- zepten für internationales Aufsehen sorgte. Auf Grund seiner guten Ausbildungsreverenzen war Er war 1930 bis 1931 Chef-Designer im Ent- wicklungsbüro von der Daimler-Benz AG. Im neu gegründeten Design Büro Porsche war er ab 1931 Chef Designer und Leiter der Karosse- rie Konstruktionsabteilung. Am 18. Jänner 1936 skizzierte Komenda seinen ersten Wagen für das Volk. Es war eine Stromlinienform mit separat verschraubtem Kotflügel. Ein sehr modernes Design für diese Zeit. Bereits 1937 wurden 30 Vorserienkarosse- rien bei Daimler-Benz im Karosseriewerk Sindelfingen gebaut. Dazu gehörten 29 Limousinen und ein Cabrio, die jeweils mit einem vollen Stahlkörper, ohne Heckscheibe durch einen luftgekühlten 22PS 4-Zylinder Motor im Heck ange- trieben wurden. 1937 wurden 3 Sportcoupés auf der Fahrwerksgruppe des KdF Volkswa- gen für das Rennen Berlin – Rom konstruiert. Der Körper des Porsche Typ 60 wurde von Komenda entworfen und vom Karosseriebauer Reutter in Stuttgart aus Aluminium getrieben. Angetrieben von einem 1,1 Liter VW-Motor erreichte das Sportcoupé eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 150km/h. Die unsichere Wirtschaftslage nach dem Kriegsende bereitete Volkswagen große Probleme. Der Vertrag mit Porsche ist ausgelaufen und sie hatten keinen Designer mehr. -

Backing up just a little, Michael Copperthite is the great- great-grandson of the pioneering family that started up the Connecticut-Copperthite Pie Company in Georgetown, District of Columbia on the eve of Thanksgiving 1885. Over the next thirty-odd years the family built the ‘largest pie baking concern on the planet’, as Mike put it. The business is no longer family-owned, but the history of this entrepreneurial family has touched many in the immediate area, and much wider too, as everyone has to eat, right! www.porscheroadandrace.com A bit of history Mike did go into the pie baking business later in life creating a foundation and using his family’s 200-plus year old recipes, with 100% of all proceeds going into the support of the community. -
