Porsche 356 Pre-A Has Come Full Circle www.porscheroadandrace.com Porsche 356 Pre-A has come full circle Published: 18th January 2019 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/porsche-356-pre-a-has-come-full-circle/ Kim Copperthite watches the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo during its record run at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI, Laguna Seca, 2018 (© Mike Copperthite) It is interesting how, sometimes when you trace an old classic car or historic racer back to its roots, you end up not far from the car’s early place of residence. In this instance, the 1953 Porsche 356 Pre-A chassis #50064 acquired by Mike and Kimberly Copperthite in 2009, has returned to its motorsport ways, as she has come full circle and is once again competing on the circuits of America. www.porscheroadandrace.com Mike and Kim Copperthite pause for a photo during the set up in the Chopard Heritage Display tent at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI, Laguna Seca, 2018 (© Mike Copperthite) But the story is an interesting one. Backing up just a little, Michael Copperthite is the great- great-grandson of the pioneering family that started up the Connecticut-Copperthite Pie Company in Georgetown, District of Columbia on the eve of Thanksgiving 1885. Over the next thirty-odd years the family built the ‘largest pie baking concern on the planet’, as Mike put it. The business is no longer family-owned, but the history of this entrepreneurial family has touched many in the immediate area, and much wider too, as everyone has to eat, right! www.porscheroadandrace.com A bit of history Mike did go into the pie baking business later in life creating a foundation and using his family’s 200-plus year old recipes, with 100% of all proceeds going into the support of the community. A way of giving back and honouring the family that built the largest pie baking concern on the planet… when pie really mattered. Mike’s interest in motor cars goes back a long way, but in the late-noughties, he was looking to purchase a Pre-A Porsche 356 when he spotted a likely car on eBay. Just 9100 examples of the Pre-A Porsche 356, across all models including Coupe, Cabriolet and Speedster were produced between 1950 and 1955, making these very collectible models today. To find one advertised on eBay was just plain out of the ordinary, so Mike jumped at the opportunity and purchased the car. The day the 1953 Pre-A Porsche 356 was delivered to Mike Copperthite, 2009 (© Mike Copperthite) As happens sometimes when you buy something sight-unseen, what you get is quite different from what was advertised or what you expected to receive. The car came without www.porscheroadandrace.com any history, but for $21,500 Mike was just pleased to eventually secure his Pre-A 356 (chassis #50064). But as he dug further and further into the car’s background, a rather surprising story began to emerge. It transpired that the car’s second owner became divorced from his wife, and chassis #50064 was locked away in a storage unit with a blown engine. After some time had passed, the owner’s ex-wife became tired of paying the storage bill, and placed an ad on the bulletin board at a local PCA club meeting in Wisconsin, which read, “If you pay the $115 storage fee, the car is yours.” Unloved and seemingly unwanted by many, the car was nevertheless snapped up by its third owner in 1969, who no doubt settled the storage bill as required. Owner number three thought that the car might have been an old race car, and so he put the car into storage until he could properly restore it. Life being what it is, forty years passed, the car was never restored and he needed funds to send one of his children off to college. Roughly four decades later, and still seemingly unloved, Mike Copperthite became the lucky owner of chassis #50064. When he acquired #50064 Mike did not know any of the car’s history, but he soon discovered that he was indeed only the fourth owner. www.porscheroadandrace.com The old style horn button of the 1953 Pre-A Porsche 356. These were originally rejected by Erwin Komenda in 1953, and were followed by a design where the background to the names ‘Porsche’ and ‘Stuttgart’ changed from a dark colour to gold, and the stallion and the stag’s antlers were thinner and more refined (© Mike Copperthite) Mike picks up the story, “When the car arrived, it was in much worse condition than we expected. Initially, this all appeared to be a big mistake as we were told that the car was not worth restoring. But we weren’t going to give up without doing some further research.” Mike sent off for the Porsche COA (Certificate of Authenticity) and tracked down a copy of the Kardex from the factory, which revealed that the first owner was Paul van Antwerpen, who had purchased the car from Max Hoffman in Chicago. www.porscheroadandrace.com Paul van Antwerpen driving #50064 during the Ice Races at Elkhart Lake, December 1953 (© Susan van Antwerpen) Research The research began in earnest but sadly, an online search produced an obituary of Paul van Antwerpen who had passed away in the same month that Mike had acquired the car. “We called his brother who said that his niece had the whole history of the car and would be delighted to know it had survived all these years. Susan van Antwerpen was kind enough to send us her father’s racing bio, the car’s logbook, family photos and race programs, trophies, and family movies of the car racing in the day. At Amelia Island in 2016 we met, and Susan was reunited with her dad’s race car which she had not seen in over 60 years. Tears were shed by all!” Mike revealed. www.porscheroadandrace.com Susan van Antwerpen at home in Wisconsin in her own #61 pedal car (© Susan van Antwerpen) It turned out that Paul van Antwerpen was an original stockholder of Road America, Chairman of one of the first Wisconsin Grands Prix, and a very successful early Porsche race car driver. Van Antwerpen also pioneered racing safety at this time by selling War Surplus Helmets, Seatbelts and Rally Equipment trackside. When the car arrived, Mike confirms that it was still fitted with seatbelts straight out of a P-51 Mustang fighter, while its rally clock had originated from a B-24 Liberator bomber. That’s taking the concept of ‘extended usage’ to an altogether new level! www.porscheroadandrace.com Paul van Antwerpen driving #50064 at Road America prior to the track being paved, 1954 (© Susan van Antwerpen) www.porscheroadandrace.com #50064 dashboard with dials (© Mike Copperthite) Further research revealed that chassis #50064 competed in the Airport Series of the SCCA and was the 1954 under-1500 cc Class Winner, running in multiple SCCA/SAC National Championship races from 1953-1959, including the last street circuit race at Watkins Glen. Mrs van Antwerpen was one of the first women to race in the United States, and co- competed on race weekends in this car in many Ladies’ Races held at the same tracks. www.porscheroadandrace.com Paul van Antwerpen driving #50064 at Road America in the first race at the circuit after being paved, 1955 (© Susan van Antwerpen) It gets better! Mike Copperthite contacted the Porsche factory, and after quizzing him on several details of the car, they informed him that the car was a factory competition-spec model…and one of the first! Armed with this new information, and recognizing the importance of the race history of this car, he began the long and painstaking restoration of #50064 to her former glory. “The principal architect of the restoration was Lewis Hauser, with support from Victor Miles, Geary Miller and the team at Karosserie, Ltd in Virginia. www.porscheroadandrace.com Mike Copperthite driving #50064 at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion V, Laguna Seca during the Gmünd Cup, 2015 (© Mike Copperthite) Fitted with synchromesh transmission and a Type 528 Hirth roller-bearing crankshaft, the pushrod engine produces 70 bhp using the first of Porsche’s race engines. Der Körper des Porsche Typ 60 wurde von Komenda entworfen und vom Karosseriebauer Reutter in Stuttgart aus Aluminium getrieben. Angetrieben von einem 1,1 Liter VW-Motor erreichte das Sportcoupé eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 150km/h. Die unsichere Wirtschaftslage nach dem Kriegsende bereitete Volkswagen große Probleme. Der Vertrag mit Porsche ist ausgelaufen und sie hatten keinen Designer mehr.

  • The Professor's Book
newsroom History Dec 26, 2016 The Professor’s Book The history of the Porsche automobile brand began in 1948, but the groundwork for the company was laid in the design office of Professor Ferdinand Porsche. The first order book in 1930 recorded the start-up phase of a legend in the making. It sits unremarkably in a gray safe in a climate-controlled room: the first ledger of the Porsche design office, stored in a fireproof room in the archive of the Porsche Museum. In the timeworn ledger one can find order number 1, placed on August 21, 1930. The job involved manufacturing individual components for a “Hesselmann engine,” a cross between a diesel and a gas engine—a sign of the company’s innovative spirit since its inception. Order number 7 was of another dimension altogether. “Small-car project,” reads the description in the ledger. The Wanderer company planned to motorize the masses and needed a concept with which it could economically and inexpensively develop what was then considered a luxury item into a Volks-Wagen—a car for the people. A clever idea, as history would demonstrate. The order book provides an illuminating look at how Ferdinand Porsche and his small team of just nineteen employees embodied the vision of design creativity. On April 25, 1931, Professor Porsche had his company officially entered in the commercial register. From that day forward, “Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH, Konstruktionen und Beratung für Motoren und Fahrzeuge,” based in Stuttgart, was officially on the books. The first five projects were started in 1930 in St.

  • Volkswagen Beetle History
Volkswagen Beetle History The very first Volkswagen type 1 ever produced. Volkswagen Beetle The Volkswagen Type 1 is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. The car was originally known as Käfer, the German word for "beetle," from which the popular English nickname originates. It was not until August 1967 that the Volkswagen corporation itself began using the name Beetle in marketing materials in the US. 1933-1934 VW design drawings In Britain, VW never used the name Beetle officially. It had only been known as either the "Type I" or as the 1100, 1200, 1300, 1500, or 1600 which had been the names under which the vehicle was marketed in Europe; the numbers denoted the vehicle's approximate engine size in cubic centimetres. In 1998, many years after the original model had been dropped from the lineup in most of the world (production continued in Mexico until 2003), VW introduced the "New Beetle" (built on a Volkswagen Golf Mk4 platform) which bore a cosmetic resemblance to the original. 1934 VW Porsche-NSU Its peculiar styling, underpowered motor, rough ride, and high noise levels compared to modern vehicles might have made it a market failure. In its day, though, it was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars, and ultimately the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design (a record that will not take long to be beaten by its younger "cousin" the Type-2 Bus or Kombi, which is still in production in Brazil, with the same basic characteristics of the first series).

This is just as true for engineering services by Porsche as it is for the sports car manufacturer Porsche. Since the founding of the Porsche engineering office 90 years ago, we have dedicated ourselves to technical challenges with passion and inventiveness. Our aim is always to develop the innovations of tomorrow. What Ferdinand Porsche began with pioneering work such as the Volkswagen, we are carrying forward today with the development of technologies for the intelligent and connected vehicle of the future. In the process, we pay close attention to specific market requirements for digital functions. Hence the theme of the current issue of our magazine: "Intelligent. Connected. Digital". Our report on the Big Data Loop shows the potential that artificial intelligence holds in store for new driving functions. Learning in the cloud will make it possible to optimize driving functions largely auto- matically even after a vehicle has been delivered, thus offering customers added value. What we were able to demonstrate in the proof of concept using the example of adaptive cruise control will be of interest for many other driving functions as well. The Big Data Loop is also a good example of the increasing importance of connectivity.
