5__ Ferdinand Porsche The Legend Begins

The Porsche legend starts with Ferdinand Porsche, who was born on 3 September 1875 in Maffersdorf in (today Vratislavice in the ) and died on 30 January 1951 in . He was to have been a plumber, but the new source of power, electricity, fascinated him. He rode to evening school on a humming elec- tric bike that he made himself, a self-taught genius who did everything differently from that time onwards: a wheel-hub motor instead of complex power for his electromobile in 1900, then hybrid powering, then small, light racing cars like his »Sascha« instead of big-engine giants; then the Mercedes S, SS and SSK sports cars. Wherever Porsche worked, his career moved forwards at racing speed: Austro-Daimler, Daimler Motor Company, Steyr. Usually his employment ended in a dispute: his designs seemed too elaborate for some and he had a fiery temperament.

In 1931 he had had enough of thinking for other bosses. In Kronenstrasse in Stuttgart he founded his own de- sign office with a team of brilliant engineers like , Karl Rabe and Franz Xaver Reimspiess. Kro- nen-strasse was the birthplace of the mid-engine, synchroniser rings, – an endless list of innovations. The Auto Union »Silver Arrow« was designed there, as well as small cars for NSU and Zündapp: round-shaped, rear , one of them a boxer engine. In 1934 he was commissioned to design the »Volkswa- gen«. In 1935 the first prototypes were tested. Then war broke out, and Porsche designed Kübelwagen and . ___ Ferdinand Porsche After the end of the war he was imprisoned by the French for 22 months, fell seriously ill, was released in August in 1934 in a typical pose: 1947 and rehabilitated by court in 1948, and saw the success story of his »Beetle«. In the same year, with a stop-watch in his hand he checks his son Ferry put the first Porsche 356 on the road. Small, light and sporty – just the style of his father Ferdinand. the times of his racing drivers.

29__ Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 The Most Anticyclical Porsche in History

In 1973 the oil exporters turned off the taps, and the price quadrupled within a year. Bankruptcy and short-time working on all sides, car-free Sundays and speed limits. In the middle of this downbeat mood, Porsche burst in with the 911 Turbo. In autumn 1974 the most anticyclical Porsche ever graced the motor show in Paris. It was the Swabian answer to the Italian twelve-cylinder wonders. As this answer could not be given with the three-li- tre suction engine of the 911, in avant-garde style Porsche turned to the . In 1972 the team had demoralised its competitors in American motor sports with charged-up engines, and now had incomparable knowledge of turbo technology.

With a turbo-charger, the three-litre engine of the »Type 930«, as this road racer was called internally, produced 260 horsepower. This catapulted the 1,195 kilogram rear-engine machine to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. It maxed out at 250 km/h. Wider wings, a rear wing and a front , as well as generously sized tyres, 185 at the front and 215 at the back, underlined Porsche’s message: this is the fastest sports car that you can buy in . On two conditions – firstly, you have 65,800 deutschmarks to spare; and secondly, you are not easily scared. When you put your foot on the gas pedal, with a slight delay (»the turbo gap«) you get a massive shove from behind (»the turbo kick«), and the car goes off like a missile. ___ Germany’s fastest The Porsche racing driver Jürgen Barth and the journalist Gustav Büsing put it like this in the Big Book of sports car of the day in Porsche Types: »The driver who wanted to exploit to the full the capabilities of the in combination with action. With 260 hp, the 911 Turbo rocketed the engine performance had ... to possess above-average driving ability.« Just so, but you could enjoy the fright from zero to 100 km/h of the 911 Turbo in style, as Porsche crammed every imaginable luxury into this road racer. And it paid off: the in 5.5 seconds. 911 Turbo became the company flagship.

72__ Janis Joplin’s 356 SC Cabriolet Painted, Stolen, Salvaged

Janis Joplin was a superstar of the flower-power generation, a petite woman with a huge voice and aPorsche that looked as far-out as the clothes she wore. In September 1968 she bought a 1964 356 SC Cabriolet for 3,500 dollars. A fantastic sports car, except for the boring colour: pearl white. This was remedied by Dave Richards, a roadie who was handy with a brush and had already transformed her boyfriend’s motor- bike into a travelling psychedelic work of art. Joplin gave him 500 dollars for paint and artistic carte blanche. Richards adorned the Porsche with Janis’ astrological sign, Capricorn, adding a rainbow, butterflies, jellyfish, the »eye of God« – he created »The History of the Universe«.

Janis drove the 356 cabriolet for a year before it was stolen in San Francisco. The thief sprayed it grey. Nevertheless the cops quickly recovered Joplin’s Porsche. The »History« was liberated from its sad grey covering and restored to its old, colourful glory. In autumn 1970 Janis recorded the album »Pearl« with her Full Tilt Boogie Band in Los Angeles. Then disaster struck. On 4 October she was found dead in her hotel room: heroin.

The Porsche was standing outside. Her manager drove the 356 until Janis’s brother Michael and sister Laura claimed it for the family in 1973. Michael painted the car: grey! Sometimes Michael drove it, sometimes Laura, until the milometer stood at 140,000 and the car went into retirement. Then, in the early 90s, the Denver Center Theater Company discovered the Porsche as a requisite and restored the »History« painting in perfect, loving ___ Janis Joplins 356 SC Cabriolet detail. Michael and Laura decided it was too good to drive and handed it over to the Rock and Roll Hall »History of the Universe«: of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995. In 2015 Sotheby’s auctioned Janis’s Porsche. The auctioneer expected hand-painted, unique, simply wonderful. 600,000 dollars at most. On 10 December he banged his gavel at 1.76 million. Oh Janis, if only you could have cashed in.
