The works analyzed in the dissertation, hailing from Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia, emerge against the Hebrew and Arabic cultural and national renaissance movements, and the establishment of modern independent states in the Middle East. The dissertation stages encounters between Arabic and Hebrew literary works, exploring the ii parallel literary forms they develop in response to shared temporal narratives of a modernity outlined elsewhere and already, and in negotiation with Orientalist legacies. Secondly, the dissertation develops a generic-formal framework to address the proliferation of static and decadent texts emerging in a cultural landscape of national revival and its aftermaths, which I name impassive modernism. Viewed against modernism’s emphatic features, impassive modernism is characterized by affective and formal investment in stasis, immobility, or immutability: suspension in space or time and a desire for nonproductivity. The impassive literary forms unearthed in the dissertation propose a host of metaphors for an alternative politics grounded in passivity rather than activism, and in weakness rather than force. Chapter One, “There Is No Event Whose Mark Has Not Gone before It,” explores the difficulties of the Arabic or the Hebrew text to be read as modern. I demonstrate how Arabic writer Mahmud al-Masʿadi and Hebrew writer S. Y. Agnon stage encounters between Orientalist and literary modes of readings in their mock-classicist texts, and envision a timeless, universal literary realm in which literary periodization plays no role. Chapter Two, “Scratching at the Surface: Predicaments of Settlement and the Poetics of Disgust,” concerns the politics of settlement in the novel al-Jabal (The Mountain) by Egyptian Fathi Ghanem and in the story “ʿAtzabim” (Nerves) and the novel Shkhol ve-khishalon (Breakdown and Bereavement) by Hebrew writer Yosef H. Brenner. It identifies an impassive mode of settlement in the works of both authors, embodied in the gesture of scratching, and countering models of productive settlement within a national context. Chapter Three, “State Time: Gendered Genres of the Everyday in Sonallah Ibrahim and Yishayahu Koren,” identifies an anti-evental aesthetic in the work of both authors, which dismantles literary and historical logics of liberation and radical rupture. Chapter Four, “Impassivity: Resistance to Analysis in Post-Oslo Palestine” examines iii two impassive genres developed in the works of Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman and writer Adania Shibli in relation to crisis ordinariness: the boring joke and the frustrating snapshot. iv The dissertation of Shir Alon is approved. He joined Reuters news agency in 1980 as a correspondent, and has been based in the Middle East for most of the last three decades. He has served as Reuters' Cairo bureau chief, and he has lived and worked throughout the region, including in Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia and the Gulf. From 1998 to 2003, he was based in Washington, DC, covering U.S. foreign policy for Reuters. For two years until the fall of 2011 Wright was editor of the Arab Media & Society Journal, published by the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Training and Research at the American University in Cairo. Elisabeth Jaquette Elisabeth Jaquette is a translator from the Arabic and Executive Director of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). Her work has been shortlisted for the TA First Translation Prize, longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award, and supported by several English PEN Translates Awards, a Jan Michalski Foundation residency, and the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. Perhaps this is partly why for long time there persisted, both in the minds of some Western and Arabic readers, the notion that the genre is a European invention, and therefore, the Arabic novel in particular, an act of literary mimicry. This is not only erroneous, but it also misses what is actually fascinating about the story of the novel in Arabic. It is a story that tells of a deep engagement with a great literary tradition as well as a commitment to invention.

    PALESTINIAN NOVELS AND MEMOIRS SUSAN ABDULHAWA Born in 1970 in Kuwait to refugee parents; was given to foster parents in North Carolina, U.S; studied Biology and Neuroscience; later on turned to journalism and writing; founder of the NGO Playgrounds for Palestine; heavily involved in the campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions and as a speaker for al-Awda, the Right to Return coalition. Currently lives in Pennsylvania. Mornings in Jenin (2010) (originally published as ‘Scar of David’ in 2006) follows four generations of the Abulheja family, who, after having been forced to flee their lands in 1948, have to build up a life and a home in the Jenin refugee camp. While the head of the family is brokenhearted over the loss of his lands and olive groves, his offspring becomes involved in the struggle for freedom, peace and home. Their story is told by Amal, the patriarch’s granddaughter, who wants to pass on her family’s story to her own daughter. The Blue between Sky and Water (2015) tells the story of the Barakat family and their powerful women throughout the decades. Expelled from their home in 1947, the family - centering around Nazmiyeh, the eldest daughter - tries to rebuild life in a refugee camp in Gaza amidst violence and deprivations. A few generations later, Nazmiyeh’s Americanborn grandniece Nur rediscovers her roots when she falls in love with a doctor working in Gaza. MAHA ABU DAYYEH (1951- 2015) Born in Jerusalem, was a visionary leader of the Palestinian women’s movement. In 1991, she co- founded the Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counseling in Jerusalem, and was crucial in its establishment as a leading institution for the promotion of women’s rights in Palestine.

His gentle nature and vast schol­ arship, his courtesy and erudition will be addressed in the printed talks which this booklet contains. I only wish to add a brief word to record the extraordinary grace oflife and learning Shelomo Dov Goitein brought to our community and to express, on behalf of so many here whose lives he touched, the pride and pleasure we felt in his presence and our gratitude for the kindness and friendship he so warmly and generously bestowed. I feel especially privileged by this happenstance because Professor Goitein was, in a way, the first introduction I had to life as it can be and should be at the Institute. When I came to the Institute in I973, I was working on certain works of art that involved some rather recondite texts in Hebrew, a language of which I am quite ignorant.
