Dado que las expectativas de género tradicionales ven "la feminidad [...] asociada con el cuidado y el cuidado de los demás, con la emoción, la pasividad y la vulnerabilidad [y] la violencia y la agresión como algo intrínseco a nuestra conceptualización de la masculinidad" (Boyle 2005, 95), nuestra premisa teórica es que las narraciones que retratan a las mujeres violentas se comprometen a una relación problemática con uno de los pilares de la dominación masculina, el de la violencia (Bourdieu 2002). Elegimos trabajar en El reto (La sfida) de Francesco Rosi (1958) e El camorrista (Il camorrista) de Giuseppe Tornatore (1986) para investigar una especie de estado naciente (Alberoni 1979) de esta relación problemática, ya que esas películas muestran, entre otros protagonistas masculinos, dos importantes señoras de la Camorra. Ambos se basan en hechos reales, individuos, evidencia periodística y judicial. La “Bosunta Assunta Maresca” de Camorra, llamada "Pupetta" (muñequita), es la prominente (anti) heroína femenina de la primera película, mientras que Rosetta Cutolo, la jefa de Camorra Raffaele Cutolo, hermana, es la (anti) heroína de El Camorrista. Al principio, veremos los elementos que resaltan las “dimensiones de tener género y adquirir género” (Buonanno 2014) en la representación de las dos mujeres. En segundo lugar, buscaremos otros elementos que produzcan representaciones tan diferentes, cuyo origen se encuentre en fuentes como el derecho penal, extractos de interrogatorios y artículos de prensa. Since traditional gender expectations see “femininity [...] associated with nurturing and caring for others, with emotion, passivity and vulnerability [and] violence and aggression as intrinsic to our conceptualization of masculinity” (Boyle 2005, 95), our theoretical premise is that narratives that portray violent women commit themselves to a troublesome relation with one of the pillars of male domination, that of violence (Bourdieu 2002). We choose to work on La sfida (The Challenge) by Francesco Rosi (1958) and Il camorrista (The Professor) by Giuseppe Tornatore (1986) to investigate a sort of Statu Nascenti (Alberoni 1979) of this troublesome relation, since those movies depict - among other male protagonists - two important Camorra ladies. Both are based on actual events, individuals, journalistic and judiciary evidence. The Camorra’s Boss Assunta Maresca, named “Pupetta” (little doll), is the prominent female (anti)heroine of the first movie while Rosetta Cutolo, the Camorra’s Boss Raffaele Cutolo’s, sister is the (anti)heroine of Il Camorrista. First, we will look at the elements that highlight the “gendered and gendering dimension(s)” (Buonanno 2014) in the representation of the two women. Secondly, we will briefly explore other elements that contribute to such peculiar representations (press articles, extracts from interrogatories and minor references to some implications that drove the revision of the legal framework) in order to indicate relevant future fields of study related to this issue but also aiming at better supporting our “gendered and gendering” reading/interpretation of criminal women. There is nothing more compelling than crime and violence, as long as we are not subject to direct physical harm. The mass media W entertains us with violence and crime as a form of daily cultural consumption, due to the invisible buffer provided by the medium itself, which allows us to satisfy our carnal curiosities from a safe space. Contemporary Western society has a complex relationship with violence. Our society disapproves of and ‘expropriates’ violence as Giddens (1990) states, but as Thompson (1995) explains, society discovers and recovers violence through the media. So it is not surprising that crime and violence ‘are at home’ in the media. When crimes are committed by women they become even more interesting, since they are a challenge against our society’s behavioural standards and expectations. This is probably the reason why in the last several years there has been a surprising proliferation of TV series featuring female protagonists committing various types of crimes (Negra and Lagerwey 2017). Bloodthirsty women are dominating the screens of our televisions, computers and tablets, thus creating both a rejection and denial of the crimes being committed and simultaneously producing a sense of satisfaction from challenging the social order. Through these representations of women in crime, we experience crossing the borders of what is socially accepted. Violence and crime are often solely male domains, and as Milly Buonanno states in her edited collection Television Antiheroines (2017), these multiple images of bad women in TV productions serve to challenge male domination (Bourdieu 2002). While violent women may be frequently represented in TV series, the same trend does not apply to the film industry, which appears to be lagging behind in the number of antiheroines featured. Television serial productions encourage experimentation, which could be the reason why more antiheroines are found in that medium, since representations of violent women are still not always socially accepted. Many authors assert that media outlets are often asked to limit the quantity and quality of violent women protagonists because they challenge every-day reality and the public’s subconscious expectations of female behaviour (Morrissey 2003; Boyle 2005; Jewkes 2011). Such unrealistic proportions of violent women in TV series and in cinema might have more to do with the different kinds of audiences these two media have: a curious, topic-related, younger and active audience for serial TV and a cinematic audience now ‘residual’ in the sense that it comprises people unfamiliar with new technologies for online/streaming consumption and therefore perhaps more conservative in terms of gender order-related representations. Nevertheless, the aim of this article is to analyse the way in which two antiheroines have been depicted in two different films and whether those narratives have a problematic relationship with that pillar of male domination: violence (Bourdieu 2002). We have chosen La sfida (The Challenge) by Francesco Rosi (1958) and Il camorrista (The Professor) by Giuseppe Tornatore (1986), to investigate the origin of this problematic relationship,
