  • Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia
Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia (8th – 6th centuries BCE) An honors thesis for the Department of Classics Olivia E. Hayden Tufts University, 2013 Abstract: Although ancient Greeks were traversing the western Mediterranean as early as the Mycenaean Period, the end of the “Dark Age” saw a surge of Greek colonial activity throughout the Mediterranean. Contemporary cities of the Greek homeland were in the process of growing from small, irregularly planned settlements into organized urban spaces. By contrast, the colonies founded overseas in the 8th and 6th centuries BCE lacked any pre-existing structures or spatial organization, allowing the inhabitants to closely approximate their conceptual ideals. For this reason the Greek colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia, known for their extensive use of gridded urban planning, exemplified the overarching trajectory of urban planning in this period. Over the course of the 8th to 6th centuries BCE the Greek cities in Sicily and Magna Graecia developed many common features, including the zoning of domestic, religious, and political space and the implementation of a gridded street plan in the domestic sector. Each city, however, had its own peculiarities and experimental design elements. I will argue that the interplay between standardization and idiosyncrasy in each city developed as a result of vying for recognition within this tight-knit network of affluent Sicilian and South Italian cities. This competition both stimulated the widespread adoption of popular ideas and encouraged the continuous initiation of new trends. ii Table of Contents: Abstract. …………………….………………………………………………………………….... ii Table of Contents …………………………………….………………………………….…….... iii 1. • Geomorphological Evolution of Phlegrean Volcanic Islands Near Naples, Southern Italy1
Berlin .Stuttgart Geomorphological evolution of Phlegrean volcanic islands near Naples, southern Italy1 by G.AIELLO, D.BARRA, T.DE PIPPO, C.DONADIO, and C.PETROSINO with 9 figures and 5 tables Summary. Using volcanological, morphological, palaeoecological and geoarchaeological data we reconstructed the complex evolution of the island volcanic system of Procida-Vivara, situated west of Naples betweenthe lsland of lschia and the PhlegreanFields, far the last 75 ky. Late Pleistocenemorphological evolution was chiefly controlled by a seriesof pyroclas tic eruptions that resulted in at least eight volcanic edifices, mainly under water. Probably the eruptive centresshifted progressively clockwise until about 18 ky BP when volcanic develop ment on the islands ceased. The presenceof stretches of marine terraces and traces of wave cut notches, both be low and abovè'current sea levels, the finding of exposed infralittoral rnicrofossils, and the identification of three palaeo-surfacesburied by palaeosoilsindicates at least three differen tial uplift phases. These phases interacted with postglacial eustaticfIuctuations, and were sep arated by at least two periods of generai stability in vertical movements. A final phase of ground stability, characterisedby the deposition of Phlegrean and lschia pyroclastics, start ed in the middle Holocene. Finally, fIattened surfacesand a sandy tombolo developedup to the present-day. Recent archaeological surveys and soil-borings at Procida confirm the presence of a lagoon followed by marshland at the back of a sandy tombolo that were formed after the last uplift between the Graeco-Roman periodandthe15di_16dicentury. These areaswere gradu ally filled with marine and continental sedimentsup to the 20di century. ' Finally, our investigation showed that the volcanic sector of Procida-Vivara in the late Pleistocene-Holocenewas affected by vertical displacementswhich were independent of and less marked than the concurrent movement in the adjacent sectors of lschia and of the Phle grean Fields.

  • An Investigation Into the Rise of the Organized Crime Syndicate in Naples, Italy
THE FIRST RULE OF CAMORRA IS YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT CAMORRA: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE RISE OF THE ORGANIZED CRIME SYNDICATE IN NAPLES, ITALY by DALTON MARK B.A., The University of Georgia, tbr 2013 Mark 1 In Naples, Italy, an underground society has a hand in every aspect of civilian life. This organization controls the government. This organization has been the police force. This organization has been a judicial board. This organization has maintained order in the jails. This organization is involved in almost every murder, every drug sale, every fixed election. This organization even takes out the garbage. But the first rule of Camorra is you do not talk about Camorra. The success of this crime syndicate, and others like it, is predicated on a principle of omertà – a strict silence that demands non-compliance with authority and non-interference in rival jobs. Presumably birthed out of the desperation of impoverished citizens, the Camorra has grown over the last three centuries to become the most powerful force in southern Italy. The Camorra’s influence in Naples was affirmed when various local governments commissioned the them to work in law enforcement because no other group (including the official police) had the means to maintain order. Since the Camorra took control of the city, they have been impossible to extirpate. This resilience is based on their size, their depravity, their decentralization, and perhaps most importantly, the corruption of the government attempting to supplant them. Nonetheless, in 1911, the Camorra was brought to a mass trial, resulting in the conviction of twenty-seven leaders.

PREGLEDNI ČLANCI UDK 343.974(450) Prihvaćeno: 12.9.2018. Elvio Ceci, PhD* The Constantinian University, New York ANALYSIS OF ORGANIZED CRIME: CAMORRA Abstract: Organized crime is a topic that deserves special attention, not just in criminal science. In this paper, the author analyzes Italian crime organizations in their origins, features and relationships between them. These organizations have similar patterns that we will show, but the main one is the division between government and governance. After the introductory part, the author gives a review of the genesis of the crime, but also of the main functions of criminal organizations: control of the territory, monopoly of violence, propensity for mediation and offensive capability. The author also described other organizations that act on the Italian soil (Cosa Nostra, ‘Ndrangheta, Napolitan Camora i Apulian Sacra Coroina Unita). The central focus of the paper is on the Napolitan mafia, Camorra, and its most famous representative – Cutolo. In this part of the paper, the author describes this organization from the following aspects: origin of Camorra, Cutulo and the New Organized Camorra, The decline of the New Organized Camorra and Cutolo: the figure of leader. Key words: mafia, governance, government, Camorra, smuggling. INTRODUCTION Referring to the “culturalist trend” in contemporary criminology, for which the “criminal issue” must include what people think about crime, certain analysts study- ing this trend, such as Benigno says, “it cannot be possible face independently to cultural processes which define it”.1 Concerning the birth of criminal organizations, a key break occured in 1876 when the left party won the election and the power of the State went to a new lead- ership.
