Bölüm Dergisi’nin bu sayısında 5 makale ile karşınızdayız. İ.Ü. Edebiyat Fakültesi Tiyatro Eleştirmenliği ve Dramaturji Bölümü öğretim üyesi Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Nilgün Firidinoğlu, “Representation of Non-Muslims in The Ottoman Theatre” başlıklı makalesinde Batılı tiyatronun Osmanlı’daki öncüleri olmalarına rağmen, gayri-müslim Osmanlıların oyun metinlerindeki temsiliyetindeki problemlere odaklanıyor. Üyesi Nazila Heidarzadegan “Representation of Problems or Problematic Representation: Three Middle Eastern American Plays” başlıklı makalesinde Ortadoğu kökenli Amerikalı oyun yazarlarının 11 Eylül sonrası döneme nasıl tepki verdiklerini tartışıyor. Heidarzadegan, özellikle 11 Eylül sonrasında Ortadoğuluların, Amerika Birleşik Devlerinde nasıl stereotipleştirildiğini ve problemlerin kaynağı olarak algılandığını Ortadoğu kökenli üç Amerikalı yazarın oyun metnine odaklanarak ele alıyor: Sam Yunis’in Browntown, Heather Raffo’nun Ten Acrobats in an Amazing Leap of Faith ve Yussef El Guindi’nin Nine Parts of Desire isimli oyunları makale boyunca Homi Bhabba’nın postkolonyalizm okumaları eşliğinde tartışılıyor. İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi İletişim Fakültesi Sahne ve Gösteri Sanatları Yönetimi Bölümü araştırma görevlisi Dr. Burcu Halaçoğlu, “Theodoros Terzopoulos’un Dionizyak Oyuncusu ve Sahnedeki Mevcudiyeti” başlıklı makalesinde çağdaş tiyatro yönetmenlerinden Terzopoulos’un oyunculuk teknikleri, mevcudiyet fikri üzerinden ele alınıyor. Theodoros Terzopoulos tiyatrosunun merkezinde oyunculuk tekniğinin ana malzemesi oyuncunun bedenidir. Esrime halinde zihin

Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires.

  • Auerbach, Tanpınar and Edib in Istanbul: Reinventing the Humanities and Comparative Literature
Auerbach, Tanpınar and Edib in Istanbul: Reinventing the Humanities and Comparative Literature An Interview with Efe Khayyat on Istanbul 1940 and Global Modernity: The World according to Auerbach, Tanpınar, and Edib OĞUZ TECİMEN uring the last decade ground-breaking studies on Erich Auerbach have appeared Din English, reviving the interest in Auerbach’s extraordinary work worldwide. Kader Konuk’s East West Mimesis (2010), for instance, demonstrates the historical, geo- graphical and academic circumstances that conditioned Auerbach’s writing of Mimesis in Istanbul. Konuk aptly shows how Auerbach’s masterpiece is not just a work of exile, as Edward Said and others once argued, but was thoroughly informed by Auerbach’s tenure in Istanbul between 1936-1947. As another example, the collection of writings by Auerbach, Time, History and Literature (translated by Jane O. Newman, 2013) along with James I. Porter’s comprehensive introduction to the volume, covers Auerbach’s in- tellectual trajectory from beginning to end, depicting Auerbach as a multifaceted intel- lectual (philologist, philosopher, historian, literary critic), and revealing the relevance of Auerbach’s work to comparative and world literary studies today. Despite these and many other extraordinary contributions to Auerbach scholarship, there seemed to be something missing in this ever-expanding corpus. Did Auerbach not have any non-Western colleagues to work with in Istanbul? Did he not have Turkish colleagues at Istanbul University in addition to Turkish students? If Auerbach

51 told against him, and still more the extreme penury in which the greater part of his life was passed. This compelled him to place his immediate wants before all else ; he could not afford to work for art's sake alone, and many of his verses were written either for money or in the hopes of gaining it. That under such conditions he should have attained the high position that he did proves him to have been possessed of more than ordinary ability, and the remark of the critics quoted by Latifi is well-founded that it must have been by sheer force of native talent that a man without education, who had never sat at the feet of muderris or professor, was able to produce works of imaginative art that filled the cultured with admiration and amazement. The biographer just mentioned waxes enthusiastic when discussing Zati's gifts; not only is he the most prolific of the lyrists, but had it not been for his deafness and his poverty it is certain that not one of all tliose who went before or followed after him could have approached him, for he would have been uiiif|uc in the cycle and pre-eminent on the earth; 'many an age must the circling heavens roll ere mother earth bring forth to the world fiom the womb of nature one of loft\' genius like to i)ini.' EDHEM ELDEM OTTOMANS AT THE ALHAMBRA, 1844-1914 AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PERCEPTION OF AL-ANDALUS BY OTTOMAN SUBJECTS IN TIMES OF MODERNITY A PHOTOGRAPH It all started with a photograph a friend showed me years ago, and which I came to seriously study only very recently. An albumen print pasted on cardboard, with no indication of the photographer, depicted a slender bearded man wearing a dark cloak and a white turban, standing in the corner of a Moresque courtyard. The back of the photograph bore inscriptions in both Turkish and Arabic, starting with a legend for the photograph, in the former language (fig. 1): “An apartment in the palace of the Alhambra, located in the city of Granada in Al-Andalus.” Followed a dedication to a certain Hasan Tahsin Bey, described as “prosecutor at the Beirut court of appeal.” This mention was dated 22 January 1327, which corresponds to 4 February 1912, and signed by “Khalīl Jawād al- Khālidī, former naib (deputy kadi, or judge) of Diyarbekir.” The author then proceeded to introduce the six verses that ended the inscription: “A copy of the poem I wrote in the visitor’s book of the Alhambra.” Department of History, Boğaziçi University. Prof. Selçuk Akşin Somel Keywords: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha, the Tanzimat era, Partiality This thesis aims to reassess the reliability of Ahmed Cevdet Pasha’s Tezakir and Maruzat as the substantial primary sources of the Tanzimat period and go beyond the understand- ing of the ‘incontestability’ of Cevdet Pasha’s writings. Being originally from the ilmiye class, Cevdet Pasha was one of the most prominent statesmen of the Tanzimat era and actively involved in the implementation of numerous reforms. Therefore, while his ac- counts are dealt with, it is important to figure out the expectations, purposes, and perspec- tives that formed the basis of Cevdet's narration in order to evaluate to what extent Cevdet’s accounts are objective and reliable. In this study, first, Cevdet’s subjective atti- tude toward the five grand viziers —Reşid, Fuad, Âli, Mahmud Nedim, and Midhat Pa- shas— of the era is examined. Second, Cevdet’s notion of the sultanate is considered and his attitude toward the two sultans of the Tanzimat era—Abdülmecid and Abdülaziz— and their reigns is analyzed.
