“We Are Strong Women”: a Focused Ethnography Of
“WE ARE STRONG WOMEN”: A FOCUSED ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE REPRODUCTIVE LIVES OF WOMEN IN BELIZE Carrie S. Klima, Ph.D. University of Connecticut, 2002 Belize is a small country in Central America with a unique heritage. The cultural pluralism found in Belize provides an opportunity to explore the cultures of the Maya, Mestizo and the Caribbean. Women in Belize share this cultural heritage as well as the reproductive health issues common to women throughout the developing world. The experiences of unintended pregnancy, contraceptive use and abortion were explored with women using a feminist ethnographic framework. Key informants, participant observations, secondary data sources and individual interviews provided rich sources of data to examine the impact of culture in Belize upon the reproductive lives of women. Data were collected over a two-year period and analyzed using QSRNudist qualitative data analysis software. Analysis revealed that regardless of age, ethnicity or educational background, women who found themselves pregnant prior to marriage experienced marriage as a fundamental cultural norm in Belize. Adolescent pregnancy often resulted in girls’ expulsion from school and an inability to continue with educational goals. Within marriage, unintended pregnancy was accepted but often resulted in more committed use of contraception. Couples usually made decisions together regarding when to use contraception, however misinformation regarding safety and efficacy was prevalent. While abortion is illegal, most women had knowledge of abortion practices and some had personal experiences with self induced abortions using traditional healing practices common in Belize. -

Registration of Belizeans Overseas Connecting with the Diaspora The Government of Belize is undertaking an exercise to determine the number of Belizeans living overseas and to foster a closer relationship with this overseas community. It is hoped that through this exercise our various Embassies and Consulates will be better able to work with the Government of Belize to address the needs of our Citizens residing overseas by providing more and improved services, and to continue together in the work of developing Belize. The information being gathered through our various Embassies and Consulates will be transmitted to Belize for input into a secure database in the Ministry of Foreign accessible only to those in the ministry directly responsible for the Ministry’s relationship with the Overseas Community. Information submitted to the various Embassies and Consulates will also be retained in those offices to facilitate ease of communication with those persons who have expressed their desire to be involved. The information will not be shared, unless it is specifically requested on the form by those persons who wish to share their skills and talents; and even so contact will be made initially through the Embassy or Consulate through whom the information was submitted. Electronic copies of the form can be found on: www.belize.gov.bz, www.mfa.gov.bz, and on the website of our Embassies and Consulates as shown on our Ministry’s website contact details. Correlates of Sexual Initiation among Belizeans: Implications for HIV Risk Background and Significance The social meaning and significance of sexual initiation varies by culture, however, it remains a milestone in the physical and psychological development of both men and women throughout the world. Consequently, the timing of sexual debut is an important transition in a person’s reproductive trajectory; it represents changes in interpersonal relationships and decision-making processes. Furthermore, the context within which it occurs can have immediate and far-reaching consequences for the individual. Sexual initiation heralds the onset of possible exposure to unexpected and undesirable reproductive outcomes such as unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, and even infertility. A fair amount of research have implicated early sexual debut as a factor in subsequent risky sex-related behaviours such as inconsistent condom use and increased number of lifetime partners. Actually, delaying sexual initiation has been credited as one of the behaviour changes that contributed to the decline of HIV in Uganda. In many developed countries sexual debut typically occurs during adolescence; by age 20 usually about 80% of young adults are sexually experienced. Furthermore, countries of varied economic development are witnessing younger ages of sexual initiation with each subsequent generation. Globalization, advancing economic development, increased autonomy of women and the diminishing role of the church have been posited as social forces influencing this phenomenon. National boundaries are increasingly unable to constrain ideas, customs or behaviour as the vast apparatus of consumerism traverses the world. Thus, worldwide advances in human and economic development precipitate economic and cultural changes. -

Land Loss and Garifuna Women’s Activism on Honduras’ North Coast By Keri Vacanti Brondo1 Abstract2 This paper reports on the gendered impacts of Honduras’ neoliberal agrarian legislation within the context of tourism development. It draws on ethnographic research with the Afro-indigenous Garifuna to demonstrate how women have been most affected by land privatization on the north coast of Honduras. Garifuna communities are matrifocal and land had historically been passed through matrilineal lines. As the coastal land market expands, Garifuna women have lost their territorial control. The paper also treats Garifuna women’s activism as they resist coastal development strategies and shifts in landholding. While women have been key figures in the Garifuna movement to title and reclaim lost ancestral land, the movement as a whole has yet to make explicit the gendered dimensions of the land struggle. -

Chapter 2 Incarnation of the National Identity or Ethnic Affirmation? Creoles of Belize1 Elisabeth Cunin xyx h wahn no who seh Kriol no gat no kolcha” (“I want to know who said Creoles have no culture”). The title of this“A song by Lee Laa Vernon, famous Belizean artist, reveals the current transformations of the “Creole” status in this small Anglophone country of Central America. Until now, because it was considered the symbol of Belize, the “Creole culture” did not need to be defined, much less defended. This culture was considered to be precisely what bound together a society that was characterized by a multiplicity of groups, described in accordance with their specific origin, history, culture and language. This society was frequently shown as multiethnic, in which the Creoles were the guarantors of integration and “ethnic” labels were reserved for the rest, the “others.” Creoles recognized themselves better in their close relationship with power, symbolized by the British Crown and its representa- tives, colonial administrators and major traders, in a territory that was British Honduras for a long time. Does the fact that Blackness and mestizaje in Mexico and Central America Creoles wonder about their own culture now mean they have to be understood as an ethnic group just like the others? In the way this ethnicity is asserted, are the aspirations of the Creoles to embody the nation, in the way they are considered to have embodied the colony, thereby weakened? Being the dominant group, the Creoles did not define them- selves as an ethnic group; they reserved this label for the “others,” those who were not thought to incarnate the Colony, and then the Nation; those who, quoting the expression of Cedric Grant (1976, 19), are in the society, but are not from this society.
