Kjfc 例会 （於：ジャズカントリー） 2013 年 9 月 28 日 M.S. 今回は KJFC 例会 （於：ジャズカントリー） 2013 年 9 月 28 日 NORMAN GRANTZ （1918-2001） M.S. ALONE TOGETHER 1952 今回は、あるジャズレコードのプロデューサーの仕事をとり上げてみることにしました。 かつて、ジャズ界には、数多くの優秀なプロデューサーがいました。プロデューサーの手腕によって、アル バムの完成度も大いに左右されます。 ブルーノートのアルフレッド・ライオン、プレスティジのボブ・ワインストック、オズモンド・エドワーズ、 そしてリバー・サイドのビル・グロウワー、オリン・キュープニーズ、コンテンポラリーのレスター・ケー ニッヒ、パシフィックのリチャード・ボック・・・等々。彼らの功績により、数々の名盤が産まれました。 本日、スポットをあてたのは、その中でも一際、異彩を放ち、多くのアルバムを世に送り出し、長きにわた り、ジャズ界でその名を轟かせた名プロデューサー･･･ヴァーブレコードの創立者である「ノーマン・グラン ツ」その人であります。青年時代から、人種差別撤廃を謳ったコンサートの企画を始め、数々のアイデアを 駆使し、初めて「ライブ録音」をレコード化した人としても知られており、ノーマン・グランツの代名詞と 言ってもいい「J.A.T.P.」の活動は、ジャズ界に大きな変化をもたらしました。 私がジャズを聴き始めたのが、1972 年、大学一年の頃です。そんなジャズに対する知識も未熟だった頃、月 曜日から金曜日まで、ラジオで大橋巨泉がパーソナリティを務める１０分間のジャズ番組がありました。ジ ャズ聴き始めの私にとって、格好の材料で、毎回、楽しみにして聴いていたものです。 ある週、当時、（1972 年に）録音されたばかりのパブロレコードのファーストアルバム「jazz at the santa monica civic '72」（本日、最後にご紹介するアルバム）の特集が組まれた事がありました。 そのアルバムは、エラ、ベイシー、ゲッツ、ピーターソンなどの錚々たる顔ぶれからなり、実力派ミュージ シャンの魅力が存分に発揮されたものでした。そして、初めて、ノーマン・グランツというプロデューサー の名を耳にするのです。このアルバムに刺激を受け、興味を覚えた事から、パブロレコードの数々を追い、 さらに、その前にグランツが関与したレーベル「ヴァーブ」に・・・やがて、それ以前のノーグラン、クレ フというレーベルに辿り着く・・・こうして、時間を逆行して、追跡して行ったのがジャズ探求のはじまり でした。私の「大物好き」の原点は、ここにあったのかもしれません。 今回は、ノーマン･グランツの仕事をきちんと、辿って行けるよう、クレフ→ノーグラン→ヴァーブ→パブロ と、順を追ってご紹介させていただきます。 ノーマン･グランツが手腕を発揮したアルバムの数々、さすが、大物揃い、どれも名盤です。 思えば、ジャズ初心者の頃に、ノーマン・グランツを知ったことで、私のジャズ鑑賞の方向性が定まったの かもしれません。そして彼が追及し、遺していったそのものこそ「ジャズの王道」であるという私の思いは、 今も変わりません。 ノーマン・グランツ ノーマン・グランツ（Norman Granz、1918 年 8 月 6 日～2001 年 11 月 22 日）は、アメリカのジャズの音 楽プロデューサー、興業主。 ウクライナ系ユダヤ人の家系にロサンゼルスで生まれた。グランツはアメリカ のジャズ音楽（特に 1950 年代と 1960 年代）にとって重要な存在であり、クレフ、ノーグラン、ヴァーヴ、 パブロ、というレコードレーベルを誕生させた。JATP（Jazz at the Philharmonic）の興行で一世を風靡。 生年月日： 1918 年 8 月 6 日 生まれ： アメリカ合衆国 カリフォルニア州 ロサンゼルス 死没： 2001 年 11 月 22 日, スイス ジュネーヴ 学歴： カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校 少年期に、世界大恐慌が起こり、青春時代は、苦学生であった。大学卒業後は、映画製作の MGM に入社。映画編集の 仕事に携わる。その頃からジャズに心酔して行く。トゥルーヴィルというクラブで人種差別撤廃をうたった音楽イベント を企画。世間に注目されるようになる。その後、ライブ・コンサートとそのライブ録音をレコードにするというアイデア を持ち込み、一連の有名な JATP（Jazz At The Philharmonic）の公演を行なうようになり、多くのジャズミュージシャンを 発掘、育成して行く。（人種を問わず、逆境のミュージシャンにも救いの手を差し伸べ、また、関わるミュージシャンす べてを、厚遇した事により、信望も厚かった。）この公演の模様は当初、グランツが契約していたマーキュリー・レコー ドからリリースされた。（1947～8 年） （この頃からデザインの多くをデビッド・ストーンマーチンに担当させるようになる） 1951 年、マーキュリーとの契約を残したまま、クレフを設立。（日本ではグランツというレーベルで発売された） 1953 年ごろ、マーキュリーとの契約切れを機に、自分の名前をもじったレーベル、ノーグランを誕生させる。 初の JATP 東京公演 1956 年にグランツ自らがヴァーブ・レコードを設立し、（クレフ、ノーグランは）そこにまとめられる。 1961 年にグランツはこのレーベルを MGM に 300 万ドルで売却し、スイスへ移住、 1970 年代にプロデューサーに復帰、パブロ・レコードを設立し 80 年代中頃までレコーディングが続く。 1983 年 JATP の最後の公演が、 東京で開催される。 1987 年 パブロを、ファンタジーレコード（現在は、コンコード・ミュージックグループの傘下）に売却 年齢 年代 レーベル 順序 アルバム名 リーダー パート 32 1950 NORGRAN RECORDS 10 JAZZ GIANT BUD POWELL p 3 DJANGO REINHARDT DJANGO REINHARDT g 34 1952 CLEF RECORDS 2 STAN GETS PLAYS STAN GETS ts 1 JAM SESSION #3 WARDEL GRAY ts 35 1953 12 LESTER'S HERE LESTER YOUNG ts 11 AT THE SHRINE STAN GETS ts NORGRAN RECORDS 9 IN A MELLOW MOOD BUDDY DEFRANCO cl 36 1954 5 THE CONSUMMATE ARTISTRY BEN WEBSTER ts 6 USED TO BE DUKE JOHNNY HODGES as CLEF RECORDS 4 VELET MOOD BILLY HOLIDAY vo 7 BILLY BAUER PLECTRIST BILLY BAUER g NORGRAN RECORDS 8 THE JAZZ GIANTS'56 LESTER YOUNG ts 38 1956 15 ANITA ANITA O'DAY vo 22 ART TATUM - BEN WEBSTER QUARTET ART TATUM p 20 BASIE IN LONDON COUNT BASIE p 21 FOR MUSICIANS ONLY DIZZY GILLESPIE tp 13 PLAYS COLE PORTER CHARLIE PARKER as 39 1957 VERVE RECORDS 18 TRANQUILITY LEE KONITZ as 14 GERRY MULLIGAN GERRY MULLGAN bs 41 1959 16 GOOD PICKIN'S HOWARD ROBERTS g 19 SAXPHONE SUPREMACY SONNY STITT as 44 1962 17 NIGHT TRAIN OSCAR PETERSON p 54 1972 24 jazz at the santa monica civic '72 COUNT BASIE p PABLO RECORDS 58 1976 23 THE KING BENNY CARTER as 本日のレコードアルバムを収録年数順に並べたもの 【J.A.T.P. In Tokyo-Live】 J.A.T.P. In Tokyo-Live At The Nichigeki Theatre 1953 (Pablo Live) Recorded At The Nichigeki Theatre, Tokyo, Nov. 4, 7 & 8, 1953 1953 年、東京で実現したこのライブは、日本のジャズの歴史に置いて、最大級の役割を果たしたコン サートとして有名です。 J.A.T.P.はアーティストやグループの名前ではなく、Jazz At The Philharmonic（ジャズ・アット・ザ・ フィルハーモニック）の頭文字を並べた略称です。 ノーマン・グランツは 1944 年 7 月、ロサンゼルスのフィルハーモニック・オーディトリアムでオール・ スターズによるコンサート（カンザスシティ流ジャム・セッション）を開催し、成功をおさめ、それ以 降、開かれるようになったコンサートを、第１回目のコンサートの頭文字をとって J.A.T.P と呼ぶよう になりました。 1944 年～45 年にかけてはロスで、その後は、アメリカ各地、カナダへのロングツアーへと活動を拡げ、 一時は解散したものの、今度は、活路をヨーロッパやアジアに見出し、その活動は 1960 年以降は、断 続的にではありましたが 1983 年まで続きました。（最後のコンサートは 1983 年、東京で開催されまし た。） 1953 年（昭和 28 年）日本劇場（日劇）で開催された「Live in Tokyo」は、オスカー・ピーターソン（ピ アノ）のトリオ、クルーパ・トリオ、エラ・フィッツジェラルド（ヴォーカル）他、豪華なメンバーで した。そのアルバムの中には、自ら司会を務めるグランツの声も収録されています。 J.A.T.P. He was also a serious jazz enthusiast and collector. Tolley has graciously bequeathed his entire collection of jazz records to Carleton University for faculty and students to appreciate and enjoy. The recordings represent 75 years of collecting, spanning the earliest jazz recordings to albums released in the 1970s. Born in Birmingham, England in 1927, his love for jazz began at the age of fourteen and from the age of seventeen he was publishing in many leading periodicals on the subject, such as Discography, Pickup, Jazz Monthly, The IAJRC Journal and Canada’s popular jazz magazine Coda. As well as having written various books on British poetry, he has also written two books on jazz: Discographical Essays (2009) and Codas: To a Life with Jazz (2013). Tolley was also president of the Montreal Vintage Music Society which also included Jacques Emond, whose vinyl collection is also housed in the Audio-Visual Resource Centre.

Rivera is known for his muscular tone and unique blend of straight-ahead mainstream jazz fused with music inspired by his Latino background and heritage. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Michigan State University where he also serves as Associate Director of Jazz Studies. Rivera was born in Ann Arbor, MI and raised ‘just up the road’ in East Lansing, MI. Born into a Mexican- American family, his Chicano heritage has always been important to him and shaped his creative endeavors. His parents named him after the famed muralist, Diego Rivera. A trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts at a young age inspired him to make his own mark with the Saxophone rather than the brush. He attended Michigan State University where he studied with Andrew Speight, Branford Marsalis, Ron Blake and Rodney Whitaker. In 1999, he began his professional and touring career with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra on their Big Band ‘99 tour. Since that maiden voyage, he has performed concerts at the most prestigious venues and festivals across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He currently leads his own group, The Diego Rivera Quartet. Rivera has also toured with GRAMMY-Award winning vocalist, Kurt Elling, JUNO-Award winning Canadian Jazz Vocalist, Sophie Milman and The Rodney Whitaker Quintet. The role of the baritone saxophone as a soloist instrument has historically often been overshadowed by the tenor or the alto saxophone. Even if important innovations have been made by many great baritonists during the years, no extensive literature regarding the baritone saxophone is to be found. My aim with this Masters´ thesis is to trace the history of the baritone saxophone from its invention until the modern era, around the 80´s. My research questions are: which innovations have been done on the baritone saxophone in the previous century regarding sound, phrasing and articulation? Is there a relation between the first baritone players in jazz history and the modern ones? My purpose is to contribute to the literature regarding the baritone saxophone, creating a chronology of the most influential soloists in jazz music. My aim is also to find methods that could be helpful in a correct approach to the instrument. In addition to this, I have analyzed the ways in which the greatest baritonists have influenced my personal musical background, thus creating a link to my own artistic profile.

On July 21, 1989, When Harry Met Sally opened at theatres. Unlike most romantic comedies with the traditional sappy storyline, the witty dialogue and observational humor throughout the characters’ romantic miseries is both candid and heartfelt. Though this review is on the music and soundtrack, it is difficult to discuss most soundtracks without briefly discussing the movie itself. The choice of music for any great film is a function of the storyline. For those not familiar with the movie (one of my all-time favorites) When Harry Met Sally looks at all the common relational struggles and miseries between men and women - dating, marriage, loneliness, sex without love, and simply trying to understand and communicate with the opposite sex. It stars Billy Crystal (Harry Burns) and Meg Ryan (Sally Albright) in the title roles. Harry and Sally first meet as recent graduates at the University of Chicago. They drive together to New York to begin their careers, instigating a basic antagonism/attraction based on their conflicting personalities and outlooks on life. Sally has the fresh-faced sunny disposition, always trying to see things in the best light.
