Scope and Contents The Tommy Irvine Jazz Collection (1908-1981; bulk 1940-1953) contains approximately 444 records held in 76 album sets with performances from musicians, many of which fall under the musical genre of jazz. Most of the records are 10", Shellac, 78 RPMs. Notable musicians featured in this collection include: George Shearing, Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Lester Young, Norman Granz, Teddy Wilson, Glenn Miller, and others. Each album contains an average of 4-10 records with A and B side tracks. Jazz in the Garden, ten Thursday evening promenade concerts, is sponsored jointly by the Museum and Down Beat magazine. The series presents various facts of the jazz spectrum, from dixieland to avant garde. The Lee Konitz Quintet will give the July 7 concert. The entire Museum is open Thursday evenings until 10. The regular museum admission, $1.00, admits visitors to galleries and to 8 p.m. film showings in the Auditorium; there is no charge for Museum members. Admission to jazz concerts is an additional 50 cents for all. As in previous Jazz in the Garden concerts, tickets for each concert will be on sale in the Museum lobby from Saturday until the time of the performance.

He was known for his experimental and creative playing, as well as his legendary speed and improvisational skills. Despite being nearly blind, Tatum's dexterity made him an excellent player, as can be heard on the 1933 recording 'Tea for Two,' one of his best known songs.Ahead of his time, Art Tatum's techniques would contribute to the development of modern jazz, with aspects of his technique influencing musicians including Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson.
