This chart differs significantly from the studio recorded version, and has a full chorus band intro, an interlude leading to the vocals, an extra band bridge into a vocal reprise, plus an added 24 bar band section to close. At five and a half minutes long, it's a (I'VE GOT A GAL IN) VOCAL / SWING - LL-2100 showstopper. The arrangement is scored for male vocalist plus a backing group of 5 - ideally girl, 3 tenors and baritone, and in the GLENN MILLER $ 65.00 MV/FVQ DIFF KALAMAZOO Saxes Alto 2 and Tenor 1 both double Clarinets. The Tenor solo is written on the 2nd Tenor part and also cross-cued on the male vocal part. The vocal whistling in the interlude is cued on the piano part, and we have written out the opening Trumpet solo in full. u le Museum of Modern Art No. 82 »st 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-8900 Cable: Modernart Monday, June 27, I966 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Earl "Fatha" Hines Septet will give the second Jazz in the Garden concert of the season at The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street, on Thursday, June 30, at 8:30 p«in* Ihe Museum concert will be the Septet's public debut and only scheduled appearance in this country. On July 1, the group leaves for a six-week tour of the Soviet Union under the Cultural Presentations Program of the U.S. Department of State, The Septet was specially organized for the tour. "Fatha" Hines, on piano, is joined by Harold Johnson, trumpet and flugelhorn, Mike Zwerin, trombone and bass trumpet, Budd Johnson, tenor and soprano sax, Bobby Donovan, alto sax and flute, and Oliver Jackson, drums. Jazz in the Garden, ten Thursday evening promenade concerts, is sponsored jointly by the Museum and Down Beat magazine. The series presents various facts of the jazz spectrum, from dixieland to avant garde. The Lee Konitz Quintet will give the July 7 concert. The entire Museum is open Thursday evenings until 10. The regular museum admission, $1.00, admits visitors to galleries and to 8 p.m. film showings in the Auditorium; there is no charge for Museum members. Admission to jazz concerts is an additional 50 cents for all. As in previous Jazz in the Garden concerts, tickets for each concert will be on sale in the Museum lobby from Saturday until the time of the performance. -

PO Box 1236 Saratoga Springs NY 12866 USA sarah vaughan series the man i love (1963) Sarah Vaughan Biography: Sarah Lois Vaughan was born on March 27, 1924, in Newark New Jersey. She was born into a very musical churchgoing family, and this gave her the chance to discover and begin developing her stunning abilities at an early age. She began piano lessons while in elementary school, and played and sang in the church choir, as well as during church services. During her teens she began seriously performing and attending nightclubs, and while she did eventually attend an arts-based high school, she dropped out before graduating to focus on her burgeoning musical exploits. Encouraged by a friend or friends to give the famous career-making Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City a try (the exact date and circumstances are debated), she sang Body and Soul and won. This led to her coming to the attention of Earl Hines, whose band at the time was a revolutionary group at the forefront of the bebop movement. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 Passing for Black: Coon Songs and the Performance of Race Until recently, scholars exploring blackface minstrelsy or the accompanying “coon song craze” of the 1890s have felt the need to apologize, either for the demeaning stereotypes of African Americans embedded in the art forms or for their own interest in studying the phenomena. Robert Toll, one of the first critics to examine minstrelsy seriously, was so appalled by its inherent racism that he focused his 1974 work primarily on debunking the stereotypes; Sam Dennison, another pioneer, did likewise with coon songs. Richard Martin and David Wondrich claim of minstrelsy that “the roots of every strain of American music—ragtime, jazz, the blues, country music, soul, rock and roll, even hip-hop—reach down through its reeking soil” (5). -

Upstage door to a mall. [Over the mall speakers play a series of Frank Sinatra songs quietly overhead. “It was a very good year” It repeats with or without lyrics until next specified change. All is calm. Bright lights. Regular business. Explosion. Panic. Running. Gun shots. Shelves pushed over. Ransacking. Small fires ignite. All lights out but one LED bulb. EZRA hobbles in, holding his bloodied leg. Kicking things with it. Painful. Looking for something, he looks at the aisle signs. Sees what he needs. He digs. Reveals a bottle of hand sanitizer. Loud sounds from outside and footsteps. Bulky men run by. EZRA is still. He looks back at the aisle signs. Sees what he needs. He digs. Reveals a sewing kit. He sits and props himself against one of the few standing shelves, rips the packaging for the sewing needles, opens the sanitizer, proceeds to tend to his wound.] EZRA: Yesterday began in a hue of grey, as all grey days do. Bits of rain and snow, but mostly just grey. Went about the daily routine. I got up. Ate my Chocolate Special K. Had coffee. Spat it out cuz I hate everything about coffee. I am trying to build up my tolerance. Brushed. Said bye to the dog. Went to school. Normal day. Slept in Ms. Grover’s. Flirted in Madame Rubin’s. Paid attention in Mr. Jatrun’s, cuz I actually learn things there. -

Blackface: A Reclamation of Beauty, Power, and Narrative April 20 – June 15, 2019 Exhibition Essay - Black Face: It Ain’t About the Cork by Halima Taha Blackface: It Ain’t About the Cork c 2019 Halima Taha Galeriemyrtis.net/blackface Black Face: It Ain’t About the Cork Currently ‘blackface’ has been used to describe a white adult performing a nauseatingly racist caricature of a black person; to a pair of pre-teen girls who never heard the word ‘minstrelsy’ when experimenting with costume makeup at a sleep over-- yet ‘blackfaced’ faces continue to be unsettling. Since the 19th century a montage of caricaturized images of black and brown faces, from movies, books, cartoons and posters have been ever present in the memories of all American children. Images of the coon, mammy, buck, sambo, pick-a-ninny and blackface characters, portrayed in subservient roles and mocking caricatures include images from Aunt Jemima at breakfast, to the1930’s Little Rascals, Shirley Temple in The Littlest Rebel, Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in blackface on Saturday morning TV; to Uncle Ben staring from the cupboard-- all reinforced the demeaning representations of African Americans created to promote American white supremacy. The promotion of this ideal perpetuates the systemic suppression and suffocation of the black being. For many African Americans these images of themselves evoke an arc of emotions including: anger, sadness confusion, hurt--invisibility and shame. In 1830 Thomas Dartmouth Rice known as the “Father of Minstrelsy” developed a character named Jim Crow after watching enslaved Africans and their descendants reenacting African storytelling traditions that included folktales about tricksters, usually in the form of animals. -
