It classifies non-translation, initial translation and retranslation as the three existential forms in which translation appears and proposes that each of these forms attributes the foreign work a different translational context. Benefiting from the favorable grounds provided by the journey of Thomas More’s Utopia in the Turkish literary system, this diachronic study embraces the pre- and post-translation periods synchronously with the period in which the translation first appeared.The study firstly investigates Utopia in the Turkish literary system as a work that appeared in the form of non-translation in the period between the Tanzimat and 1964 and questions what type of a culture repertoire this non-translation contributed to. Then, it focuses on the initial translation and seeks a position for this first translation in the context of the 1960s, referring to the social dynamics of the period in which the translation first appeared after a long phase of resistance. Here, the study touches on the agency factor and explores the historical significance of the first translation in relation to the external factors that concern the agents of the translation. Following the initial translation, which is still in print today, Utopia has been introduced to the Turkish literary system sixteen times and has met the expectations of various reader groups. Focusing on two of these representations of the work, the study explores the contexts drawn for Utopia by the retranslations within a framework that includes ideology, agency and readership. Through the analysis of this long translational journey which started in the Tanzimat Period and is still in progress, the study reveals that a number of contexts for a single literary work might appear via translation, which helps the work serve different -even opposing- ideological purposes, and that these contexts simultaneously sustain their existence in the receiving literary repertoire. i Tez Özeti Ceyda Elgül, “Türkçede Ütopik bir Serüven: Yok Çeviriden Yeniden Çeviriye” Bu çalışma, yabancı eserler için edebi dizgelerde yeni bağlamlar oluşmasında çevirinin rolünü incelemektedir. Yok çeviri [non-translation], ilk çeviri ve yeniden çeviri, çevirinin belirdiği üç varoluşsal biçim olarak sınıflandırılmaktadır ve bu biçimlerden her birinin yabancı esere farklı çeviri bağlamları atfettiği öne sürülmektedir. Thomas More’un eseri Ütopya’nın Türkçedeki serüveninin hazırladığı elverişli zeminden faydalanan bu artzamanlı çalışma, çevirinin ilk ortaya çıktığı dönemin yanı sıra, çeviri öncesi ve sonrası dönemleri de ele alır. Öncelikle, Türk edebi dizgesinde Tanzimat ve 1964 arası dönemde yok çeviri [non-translation] biçiminde beliren Ütopya’nın konumu araştırılır ve bu yok çevirinin nasıl bir kültür repertuarına katkıda bulunduğu sorgulanır. Ardından ilk çeviriye odaklanılır ve uzun bir mukavement [resistance] süreci sonrası çevirinin ortaya çıktığı dönemin toplumsal dinamiklerine değinilerek, bu ilk çeviri 60’lar bağlamında konumlandırılır. Bu noktada, aktör [agency] kavramına değinilir ve çeviri aktörlerini ilgilendiren dışsal unsurlar göz önüne alınarak ilk çevirinin tarihsel önemi araştırılır. Günümüzde hâlâ yayınlanmakta olan ilk çeviriyi takiben, Ütopya Türk edebi sistemine on altı kez sunulmuş, farklı okur topluluklarının beklentilerini karşılamıştır. Tezde bu temsillerden iki tanesi ele alınır ve yeniden çevirilerin Ütopya için oluşturduğu bağlamlar ideoloji, çeviri aktörleri ve okur kavramları çerçevesinde incelenir. Çalışma, Tanzimat’ta başlayıp günümüzde hâlâ devam etmekte olan bu uzun çeviri serüvenini inceleyerek, bir edebiyat eserine çeviri yoluyla nasıl birçok bağlam atfedilebileceğini, eserin nasıl farklı, hatta birbirine muhalif ideolojik amaçlara hizmet ettirilebileceğini ve bu bağlamların erek edebi repertuarda nasıl eşzamanlı olarak varlığını sürdürebileceğini ortaya koyar. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my advisor Assoc. [email protected] Abstract This article addresses the question of how to relate translation theory to translation practice when teaching translation. Retranslation is viewed as a critical practice (kydd 2011) that inte- grates critical engagement with existing translations and theory into practice. This critical reflexion is part of translation competence, both in Pym’s (2003) minimalist formulation and the European Master’s in Translation guidelines. Retranslation can therefore be seen to help students achieve the sort of critical awareness that is part and parcel of translation competence. A series of practical learning activities are suggested that use retranslation. These range from analyses of retranslation of the same text to commented retranslations that ask the students to explain their own process. Each of these offers ways of going beyond textual criticism to engage with wider theoretical concerns. His fragmentary and aphoristic remarks on translation in his 133 volumes of collected works have helped make the German theoretical tradition one of the world’s richest bodies of work in the field of Translation Studies (Robinson, 2006). In his West-Östlicher Divan (1819), Goethe divides translation into three kinds: 1. The first kind of translation familiarizes us with the foreign country on our own terms. 2. In the second kind of translation one seeks to project oneself into the circumstances of the foreign country, but in fact only appropriates the foreign meaning and then replaces it with one’s own.

Retranslation, following Tahir Gürçağlar, is defined here as “the act of translating a work that has previously been translated into the same language, or the result of such an act, i.e. the retranslated text”(232). In Iran, Western classics, best-sellers and award-winning books are often retranslated multiple times. Almost one-hundred translations of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and forty different translations of 1984 are available on the Iranian book market. The more recently published Becoming, by Michelle Obama (2018) has had twenty-six different translations within a year of its publication in 2018. This seems to be the reason why Iranian journalists view retranslation as a “competition” (see Ghane). This “distinctive feature” of the Persian translation tradition, as Azadibougar and Haddadian- Moghaddam (157) call it, sparked my interest in the following questions: Why is retranslation common in Iran? What advantages do retranslations yield for Iranian translators and publishers? What leads readers to select one retranslation over others? This paper argues that retranslation in Iran is a significant and often profitable social phenomenon. For this study, I conducted interviews with ten Iranian literary translators and six publishers in Tehran, Iran, all of whom were highly recognized agents of translation.2 This approach enabled me to offer a reliable snapshot of the reasons behind retranslation in Iran. In order to realize the inductive function of advertisement translation, this paper, based on the differences between Chinese and English advertisement texts in terms of genre conventions, puts forward some methods of advertisement translation from the perspective of function in view of cultural exclusive items and cultural default. As for the different genre conventions between English and Chinese advertisements and the phenomenon of cultural specific and cultural default, the author suggests strategies from the functionalist approach. Keywords: appellative function, genre convention, translation of advertisements The functionalist translation theory holds that the reference frame of the translator in the whole process of translation should not be the original text and its functions, but one or more communicative functions expected to be achieved by the target language in the cultural environment of the target language, and various translation strategies should be flexibly adopted according to the norms of the target language culture. Therefore, due to the objective language and cultural barriers, translation cannot be carried out smoothly (Zhang & Wang, 2005, p. 106). Skopos rule means that translation behavior depends on the purpose of translation, and the result determines the method. Because the occurrence of any behavior has a certain cultural background and different cultures have different customs and values, translation is not a one-to-one language conversion activity.

Translating multicultural style in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior Pro gradu –tutkielma Englannin kieli Syyskuu 2006 120 sivua + 1 liite Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on tutkia tyyliä ja monikulttuurisuutta kiinalaisamerikkalaisen Maxine Hong Kingstonin teoksen The Woman Warrior (1976) suomentamisessa. Teoksen toinen luku on käännetty analyysia varten, mutta teosta ja sen taustaa tarkastellaan myös kokonaisuutena. Tutkimuskysymykset ovat seuraavat: 1) Millainen on lähtötekstin tyyli? 2) Miten monikulttuurisuus ilmenee lähtötekstissä? ja 3) Miten tyyli ja monikulttuurisuus välittyvät kohdetekstiin? Tutkielman teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu lähinnä ns. ideologisesta sekä funktionaalisesta käännösteoriasta. Tutkielman analyysiosiossa käsitellään myös kielitieteellisiä kysymyksiä. Käännösanalyysin pääasiallisena metodina käytetään Christiane Nordin funktionaalista tekstianalyysimallia. Analyysin keskeisiä käsitteitä ovat tyyli, kulttuurispesifisyys, kotouttaminen, sekä kaksi eri vieraannuttamisen lajia (foreignization ja defamiliarization). Analyysi tarkastelee lähtötekstiä ja kohdetekstiä rinta rinnan, ja käännösratkaisuja perustellaan käännöksen skopoksen valossa. Analyysin tulokset osoittavat, että lähtötekstin tyylille ominaisia piirteitä ovat ilmaisun
