  • Cross-Border Reading, Contemporary Fiction, and the Imagined Child Kate Foster UCL This Paper Takes a Border-C
Discussion paper: Cross-border reading, contemporary fiction, and the imagined child Kate Foster UCL This paper takes a border-crossing event in the life of one contemporary children’s novel from China as a vantage point from which to view ways that reading across the book and its shifting contexts can inform our understanding of the narrative. As a working paper in literary studies it is an exploratory venture towards questions for discussion. Context In 2016, the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing1 (HCAAW) was presented to Chinese children's author Cao Wenxuan 曹文轩 (b.1954). The award was preceded by the publication in 2015, in the UK and the US respectively, of the first of Cao’s novels to be translated into English, Bronze and Sunflower (青铜葵花, 2005) and Dawang Tome: The Amber Tiles (大王书:黄琉璃, 2008).2 While the domestic publishing industry, and market for children's books, are substantial, and imported titles in Chinese translation have had great success, the export of contemporary children's literature for the commercial English-language market is a relatively recent development.3 For a writer already at the forefront of the international circulation of contemporary children's literature from China to win the HCAAW was an event reported as a significant development in the recognition of Chinese books and authors in the world.4 Coupled with two newly-published English translations, it also marked a moment of border-crossing towards new readers.5 The author’s books for children arrived in a context where the scarcity of English-language information peripheral to writer, texts, and the contemporary Chinese children's literature scene in general, stood in noticeable contrast to the scale of material in the domestic market.

The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world committed to bringing books and children together. NEWSLETTER No 28 February, 2016 President’s Letter Dear members and supporters of IBBY Australia, It is time to join in the celebrations for our Golden Anniversary year! Once Upon a Time, in Strathfield NSW on 2 April, will be a festive day with presentations by Bronwyn Bancroft and Ursula Dubosarsky, Australian nominees for the Hans Christian Andersen Awards; and Dr Mark MacLeod’s address ‘IBBY in the Age of Globalisation.’ Bookings are coming in fast, so make sure you secure your place. If you have noticed that quite a number of IBBY members are of retirement age, why not encourage a younger friend or colleague to attend too? And in WA, the Quiz Night in Perth on Wednesday 6 April is a not-to-be-missed evening of literary camaraderie. In this special year, we look back gratefully to the founders who established IBBY. Jella Lepman began the work in post-War Europe; and in Australia, Ena Noël started our IBBY section and enlisted support from the children’s literature community. A succession of hard-working and enthusiastic presidents and members has continued the tradition, working to build bridges of children’s books throughout the world. We are proud to continue nominating Australians for the HCA Award. As you can see from the announcement on page 4, our nominees Bronwyn Bancroft and Ursula Dubosarsky were not included on the shortlist for this year’s award.

JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Published by Cardiff University Press Marketing Chinese children’s authors in an age of celebrity Frances Weightman University of Leeds Email: [email protected] Keywords Chinese Children’s Authors Celebrity Marketing Books Cao Wenxuan Paratexts Abstract In this paper I explore the topic of authorial self-fashioning in an age of celebrity. Specifically, I consider the persona of the contemporary children’s author, as he or she is constructed within the paraphernalia surrounding the main stories in children’s books. This paper is part of a broader project examining how authors and translators choose to represent themselves, or are represented by their agents and publishers, within the paratextual elements of books. The primary case study for this enquiry is Cao Wenxuan 曹文轩. Since winning the 2016 Hans Christian Andersen Award, and with an increasing volume of his work available in translation, Cao is the prime example of a celebrity Chinese children’s author, now with global recognition. Cao has always been a prolific preface writer and many of his works have other paratextual elements, including an exceptionally large number of photos of the author, all of which provide a rich source for a comprehensive evaluation of the image constructed by author/publisher of the author’s persona as presented in the ‘margins’ of the books. Acknowledgement: The research for this article was funded by a Princeton University Library Fellowship, and I would also like to acknowledge the generous help and expertise of the librarians and curators of the Cotsen Children’s Library during my time there.
