A list of all the 2021 award winners follows: John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature: “When You Trap a Tiger,” written by Tae Keller, is the 2021 Newbery Medal winner. The book is published by Random House Children’s Books, a division of Penguin Random House. 20 January 2020 IBBY Announces the Shortlist for the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Awards #HCA2020 IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People is proud to announce the shortlist for the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Award – the world’s most prestigious award for the creators of children’s and youth literature: Authors: María Cristina Ramos from Argentina, Bart Moeyaert from Belgium, Marie-Aude Murail from France, Farhad Hassanzadeh from Iran, Peter Svetina from Slovenia, and Jacqueline Woodson from the USA. Illustrators: Isabelle Arsenault from Canada, Seizo Tashima from Japan, Sylvia Weve from the Netherlands, Iwona Chmielewska from Poland, Elena Odriozola from Spain, and Albertine from Switzerland. Junko Yokota from the USA. is the 2020 jury president, and the following experts comprised the jury: Mariella Bertelli (Canada), Denis Beznosov (Russia), Tina Bilban (Slovenia), Yasuko Doi (Japan), Nadia El Kholy (Egypt), Viviane Ezratty (France), Eva Kaliskami (Greece), Robin Morrow (Australia), Cecilia Ana Repetti (Argentina), and Ulla Rhedin (Sweden). Elda Nogueira (Brazil) represented the IBBY President and Liz Page acted as Jury Secretary. The criteria used to assess the nominations included the aesthetic and literary quality as well as freshness and innovation; the ability to engage children and to stretch their curiosity and creative imagination; diversity of expressions of aesthetic, and the continuing relevance of the works to children and young people. The Award is based on the entire body of work. After the meeting Yokota said, “The jury deliberated at the International Youth Library in Munich to consider the 34 author nominees and 36 illustrator nominees from member nations of IBBY. -

Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature. -

After the drop in nominations for the 2014 Honour List, we are pleased to report that the 2016 IBBY Honour List includes the highest number of entries to date. The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world committed to bringing books and children together. NEWSLETTER No 32 February, 2017 President’s Letter Dear members and supporters of IBBY Australia The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, in the aftermath of World War II when millions of people had fled or lost their homes. (And Australia was quick to sign up as a state party to the Refugee Convention). IBBY was founded very soon after, in 1953. These were two of the organisations which arose at that time to work cooperatively, across national borders, to build a better world. Now we see many countries and leaders retreating from transnational policies. The president of the US has banned entry for people from a list of countries, in clear breach of the Geneva Convention. Australia has made savage cuts to its foreign aid budget. Millions of people, including many children, are refugees. It is easy to lose heart, and feel powerless in the face of such challenges. IBBY continues to advocate for the right of every child to be a reader, and to work to implement this through the IBBY Fund for Children in Crisis. In this newsletter are stories to inspire us, of a bilingual picture book club in Germany, and of a French project with wordless books, linked to IBBY Italia’s Silent Books: Final Destination Lampedusa.
