Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Reitzle Member of the Supervisory Board of Axel Springer SE Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reitzle, born in 1949, studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich, where he graduated with Dr.-Ing. in 1974. Parallel to the doctorate, he studied economics (graduated with diploma). In 2005, he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor by the School of Management at the Technical University of Munich. From 1976 to 1999, he worked for BMW AG in Munich, where he held various management positions and was appointed a member of the Executive Board in 1987, responsible for Research and Development. In 1994, he also became responsible for Procurement and in 1997 for Sales and Marketing. From 1999 to 2002, Prof. Dr. Reitzle worked for Ford Motor Company. As Group Vice President, Group Chairman and CEO, he was responsible for the Premier Automotive Group (with the brands Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and Volvo) in London. At the same, he was Chairman of Jaguar Cars Ltd. and Volvo Cars. In May 2002, he joined the Executive Committee of Linde AG in Wiesbaden and was Chief Executive Officer from January 2003 to May 2014. Since April 2014, he has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Axel Springer SE. Furthermore, he is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Continental AG, Hannover, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Linde AG, Munich, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Medical Park AG in Amerang and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Willy Bogner GmbH & Co. KGaA, Munich. His mandates also include a membership in the Board of Directors of Ivoclar Vivadent AG in Liechtenstein. RESEARCH PAPERS at the cutting edge of theory and practice Employment Security in the Aftermath of the Break-up of Rover Group Joy Batchelor Operations Management Group, Warwick Business School Abstract The scale and the speed with which Rover Group was broken up by BMW in March 2000 was unprecedented in the context of British industrial relations. This working paper covers the last eighteen months of BMW’s ownership of Rover Group and details: the key phases leading to the break-up of the company; the subsequent collapse of the bid by Alchemy Partners; the emergence of the Phoenix consortium bid, and the role of the trade unions in securing the future of Longbridge. Six months after the immediate future of Longbridge was secured and the sale of Land Rover was completed, the consequences of BMW’s actions for employment and industrial relations can begin to be assessed. In all, the three surviving companies of the former Rover Group sought up to 2,500 voluntary redundancies by the end of 2000.

Ford had a collection of luxury brands and didn't know what to do with them. Wolfgang Reitzle had just quit as a top executive at BMW and was looking for a job. Ford Motor Co. long had Lincoln under its belt when it acquired Jaguar Cars for $2.5 billion in 1989. Ford also had bought Aston Martin Lagonda in 1987. Then, as part of his late-1990s remaking of the automaker, CEO Jacques Nasser went on a major acquisition binge. He was negotiating to buy Volvo Car Corp. for $6.45 billion from Volvo AB in 1999. That made four luxury brands under Ford's roof. As Ford was working on the Volvo deal, Reitzle quit his top engineering post at BMW, having failed to gain board approval for an ascent to the throne. Reitzle was an industry star, billing himself as a product-development genius. He wanted to run a car company, and Nasser put him in charge of several - but with a lack of autonomy that soon would cause problems. Herding cats Premier Automotive Group, known as PAG, was a collection of luxury brands meant to achieve product, engineering, cost and creative synergies. It was hoped that Reitzle could align the various products and keep the brands from stepping on one another. "If Wolfgang hadn't been hired, would Jac have put those brands together as PAG?," asked one top Ford executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A comparison has been undertaken between car and bike racing, as represented by Formula One and MotoGp, to establish any differences in approach. The initial historical element of the research revealed that motor sport had been sponsored by vehicle manufacturers since the origins of the petrol combustion engine in the late 19th century. Any suggestion that sponsorship of motor sport is a recent, late 20th century science has been dispelled. The investigation found that the sponsors of top level car racing place major importance on achieving awareness for their brands through media exposure, particularly television.
