Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

I argue that what unites these writers is not solely the context of neocolonialism and underdevelopment in the 1950s and 60s in Brazil and Argentina but the properly vanguard problem and gesture of mediating the present and politics, as I trace in their theoretical writings, letters and literary texts their shared concern with making literature relevant, functional and dynamic in a public sphere -

Translating Brazil: From Transnational Periodicals to Hemispheric Fictions, 1808-2010 By Krista Marie Brune A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Natalia Brizuela, Co-chair Professor Candace Slater, Co-chair Professor Scott Saul Spring 2016 Abstract Translating Brazil: From Transnational Periodicals to Hemispheric Fictions, 1808-2010 by Krista Marie Brune Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Natalia Brizuela, Co-chair Professor Candace Slater, Co-chair This dissertation analyzes how travel and translation informed the construction of Brazil as modern in the 19th century, and how similar processes of transnational translation continue to shape the cultural visibility of the nation abroad in the contemporary moment. By reading journals, literary works, and cultural criticism, this study inserts Brazilian literature and culture into recent debates about translatability, world literature, and cosmopolitanism, while also underscoring the often-overlooked presence of Brazilians in the United States. The first half of the dissertation contends that Portuguese-language periodicals Correio Braziliense (London, 1808-1822), Revista Nitheroy (Paris, 1836), and O Novo Mundo (New York, 1870-1879) translated European and North American ideas of technology and education to a readership primarily in Brazil. The transnational circulation of these periodicals contributed to the self- fashioning of intellectuals who came to define the nation. To suggest parallels between Brazil and the United States in the late 19th century, the analysis of O Novo Mundo focuses on discourses of nation, modernity, and technological progress emerging in the hemispheric travels of scientists, intellectuals, and the Brazilian empire Dom Pedro II, and in the national displays at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. -

English 201 Major British Authors Harris Reading Guide: Forms There are two general forms we will concern ourselves with: verse and prose. Verse is metered, prose is not. Poetry is a genre, or type (from the Latin genus, meaning kind or race; a category). Other genres include drama, fiction, biography, etc. POETRY. Poetry is described formally by its foot, line, and stanza. 1. Foot. Iambic, trochaic, dactylic, etc. 2. Line. Monometer, dimeter, trimeter, tetramerter, Alexandrine, etc. 3. Stanza. Sonnet, ballad, elegy, sestet, couplet, etc. Each of these designations may give rise to a particular tradition; for example, the sonnet, which gives rise to famous sequences, such as those of Shakespeare. The following list is taken from entries in Lewis Turco, The New Book of Forms (Univ. Press of New England, 1986). Acrostic. First letters of first lines read vertically spell something. Alcaic. (Greek) acephalous iamb, followed by two trochees and two dactyls (x2), then acephalous iamb and four trochees (x1), then two dactyls and two trochees. Alexandrine. A line of iambic hexameter. Ballad. Any meter, any rhyme; stanza usually a4b3c4b3. Think Bob Dylan. Ballade. French. Line usually 8-10 syllables; stanza of 28 lines, divided into 3 octaves and 1 quatrain, called the envoy. The last line of each stanza is the refrain. Versions include Ballade supreme, chant royal, and huitaine. Bob and Wheel. English form. Stanza is a quintet; the fifth line is enjambed, and is continued by the first line of the next stanza, usually shorter, which rhymes with lines 3 and 5. Example is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. -

Sex! Soccer! What do these stereotypes about Brazil reflect? Where do they come from? The Portuguese phrase país do samba e do futebol—“the country of samba and soccer”—expresses a sometimes ironic self-consciousness about these hallmarks of identity and perception of what Brazil is, both in Brazil and beyond. So, then, what is Brazil—or Brazilianness? In this class we will think about the ways in which people and cultures in Brazil have developed, been represented, been fantasized about, and why these things are so. We’ll explore where samba comes from and how it came to be Brazil’s “national” dance; why Brazil has so often been identified with sensuality and sexuality, especially sensual femininity; and what does make soccer important in Brazil. We’ll think about how and why ideas about Brazilianness range from deep, medieval Catholicism to oversexed libertinism; from “savage” and “underdeveloped” to urbane and techy; and from “Latin” to African to indigenous. At the heart of our stories will be questions about sexuality, gender, race, nation-building, and identity—we will use sources ranging from novels to sociological studies to films to analyze the ways these tropes have shaped the idea of Brazil, within and without. Orientador: Dr. Leandro Belinaso Guimarães Florianópolis 2018 RESUMO A (im)possibilidade do mapa combate os modos predominantes como a cartografia é ensinada. Seja pela reprodução como imagem estática dos fenômenos espaciais, ou como discurso que fixa a leitura do mundo, a cartografia escolar é considerada um problema nesta pesquisa. Porém, mais do que definir outro meio didatizante de ensinar cartografia, esta tese escolhe pela criação de resistências na educação geográfica ao se aproximar da arte contemporânea. O que pode a arte contemporânea diante do que parece não se mover com a cartografia escolar? Um conjunto de obras e artistas foi escolhido por apresentar o mapa e os objetos da educação geográfica provocando outros sentidos que movem silenciamentos e invisibilidades na educação cartográfica. O estudo das obras pelo processo de criação dos artistas e das imagens de suas obras é incorporado a esta pesquisa assim como a proposição de práticas pedagógicas na Educação Básica, e no Ensino Superior. Aciono, pela invenção e abertura ao sensível, outras estéticas cartográficas a partir da imersão em oficinas de bordado, colagem e gravuras. Exercito o pensamento, através da potência dessas ferramentas artísticas, com a educação geográfica, como parte de um processo formativo emaranhado pela arte e pela educação. -
