La musique celtique correspondrait aux régions qui ont su garder vivante la langue de leurs lointains ancêtres : Bretagne, Irlande, Écosse, Pays de Galles. A ce stade on ne peut cependant que constater la grande diversité d’un pays à l’autre. Quel point commun existe-t-il, en effet, entre la prestation d’un pipe-band, un kan ha diskan de derrière les fagots ou un reel irlandais ? Il convient donc d’envisager résolument le pluriel quand on parle de musiques celtiques. Les musiciens et chanteurs ont fait preuve de beaucoup de créativité pour faire évoluer cet héritage, afin qu’il reste vivant et attractif.

Il y fallait bien un peu de celtitude, pour le côté ethno-régional, et de rock pour faire bon poids. C’est chose faite avec la venue cette semaine de Red Cardell, trio breton qui vint déjà dans les lieux au temps lointain où l’on pouvait y danser – une lurette, et belle… Paint it red On se disait bien, aussi, que ça faisait penser à quelque chose malgré la débagoulade de notes tombées d’un accordéon à l’accent lointainement celtisant : le riff blues-rock, les paroles en angliche, le côté mauvais garçon mid-sixties… Mais il fallut arriver à la fin pour comprendre : « I wanna see it painted, painted, painted black », ça vous rappelle quelque chose ? Pas exactement les Rolling Stones pour autant (qui, à notre connaissance, n’y ont jamais chanté « we used to dream about the revolution »), mais le même esprit et la même famille – de Bretagne en Grande-Bretagne, n’est-ce pas… Le ton, en tout cas, était donné face à un public acquis d’avance, la famille au premier rang, une poignée de vieux fans braillards au fond, ici et là quelques-uns qui se souvenaient encore de Red Cardell version 93.

I focus on musicians working in professional folk music, a field that has strong, historic associations with collectivism. This field consists of folk festivals, music camps, and other venues at which musicians from a range of countries, affiliated with broad labels such as ‘Celtic,’ ‘Nordic,’ ‘bluegrass,’ or ‘fiddle music,’ interact. Various collaborative connections emerge from such encounters, creating socio-musical networks that cross boundaries of genre, region, and nation. These interactions create a social space that has received little attention in ethnomusicology. While there is an emerging body of literature devoted to specific folk festivals in the context of globalization, few studies have examined the relationship between the transnational character of this circuit and the changing sensibilities, music, and social networks of particular musicians who make a living on it. To this end, I examine the career trajectories of three interrelated musicians who have worked in folk music: the late Canadian fiddler Oliver Schroer (1956-2008), the ii Irish flute player Nuala Kennedy, and the Italian organetto player Filippo Gambetta.

    La programmation 2008 Vendredi 1er Août 20h00 Cotriade avec Bagad, Toreth (Pays de Galles), La Virée (Acadie), Capstern (chants de marins) Repas traditionnel de poisson et musiques de la mer Port de Pêche 15 € (enfants de moins de 14 ans : 8 €) La Cotriade (du breton « kaoter », chaudron, et donc « kaoteriad », contenu du chaudron, chaudronnée) est le plat traditionnel des retours de pêche. Il faut nécessairement plusieurs poissons de toutes espèces : maquereau, lieu, congre, grondin, chinchard, vieille, vive, etc. Au débarquement, chaque marin recevait en sus de son salaire une part de la pêche : la «godaille» avec laquelle l’épouse préparait les recettes locales. On consomme d’abord l’exquise soupe de poissons puis, les poissons eux-mêmes… c’est l’occasion de se rencontrer au hasard des longues tablées où des milliers de convives fraternisent dans une ambiance de musiques et de chants marins. Toreth Fondé par Gareth Westacott et Guto Dafis en 2001 à l'occasion d'un festival, ce groupe de folk-traditionnel s'est créé une identité forte qui lui a valu de sillonner de nombreux festivals, et ce bien au delà du Pays de Galles. Leur album, sorti en 2003, proposant une musique dans la pure tradition Galloise, au son du violon et de l'accordéon, a été plébiscité par nombre de critiques. Déjà venu en terres bretonnes quelques années auparavant, Toreth revient nous faire danser à l'occasion de l'année du Pays de Toreth Galles. La Virée Depuis 2001, La Virée parcourt l’Acadie et la France pour vous faire swinguer. Les musiciens revisitent les airs québécois et acadiens, mais reprennent aussi ceux de Bretagne, le tout sous des thèmes contemporains.
