INTRODUCTION01

his report is a continuation of the National Music Museum’s 2011 programming, planning and preliminary design study for Ta renovation and expansion of the Museum. Koch Hazard Architects of Sioux Falls, SD and Schwartz/Silver Architects of Boston, MA prepared the initial study and this update in consultation with the Museum staff and Board.

Mission Statement: The National Music Museum serves the people of South Dakota and the world as an international center for collecting and conserving musical instruments of all cultures and bringing people together to study, enjoy, and understand our diverse musical heritage.

The National Music Museum (NMM) is a partnership between The University of South Dakota, which provides staff and facilities, and operating funds for preservation, teaching, and research, and the Board of Trustees of the NMM, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation that is responsible for acquisitions, certain staff positions, and funding capital projects.

Inspiration

The addition becomes a prominent new accessible entrance to the Museum, leaving the historic classical entrance intact. The addition is simple and monumental in form, but delicate in its details, both responding and deferring to the architectural spirit of the original building. In plan, the addition and plaza embrace the original as the entrance walk rises from the plaza.

Planning and Layout

The National Music Museum addition dramatically improves exhibit, public lobby, performance, meeting and education spaces. Staff operations, collection storage space, and exhibit spaces in the original Carnegie building will be renovated, and spaces which now house public amenities will be re-configured for exhibits.

The following project budget is based on two phases of construction bidding in the spring of 2018. Phase I encompasses all work other than the interior work/systems upgrades for the existing Carnegie building. Phase II is that work in the Carnegie building.

(2) The scope of work in the current Carnegie Building comprises new historic windows, selective repair

and cleaning of stone, back feeding of mechanical service piping and electrical service lines,

removal of west strairway and connection to the addition, plus updated HVAC distribution and

exhibit lighting. 28,830 SF at an average of $84/SF.

(4) This budget assumes the project is bid in the spring of 2018. It is

not possible to predict future cost escalation, but based on previous experience, we recommend

increasing the budget by 5% for each year that bidding is delayed.

(5) It is assumed that construction will be completed in two phases. Phase One is the construction of

the addition and remote storage facility. Phase Two is the renovation of the Carnegie.
