Love ~ Others ~ Make Disciples (Mission Statement)

Throughout the next three weeks St. Bonaventure will be focusing on stewardship. Each year we invite the community to commit to sharing their me, talent and treasure throughout the year. It is a me that we not only ask you to share the gi s God has given you, but it is also a me to give thanks for everyone who has shared their gi s in the past. The parish would not be able to exist without faithful people who gather each week to worship God. It would also not be able to exist without the many parishioners who have donated their skills and financial treasure to the parish over many decades.

Today’s readings focus on the importance of prayer, through the lens of stewardship. The Book of Sirach tells us that God listens to the prayers of every sinner, showing no preference. God doesn’t care how lowly or well off we are. He sll listens to our prayer. “The Lord is not deaf to Deacon Mickey Redfearn the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint” –Sirach. Psalm 34 gives us a model of how we should live, “I will bless the Lord at all mes; his praise shall be ever in my mouth.” We must praise God in everything that we do.

The reading contrasts the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee is not praying. He simply is talking to himself. Prayer is directed to God. The Pharisee pays thes on his whole income. Tithing in itself is a good thing, encouraged by God, but should not be a source of boasng. Conversely the tax collector beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ Tax collectors had a negave reputaon for exploing people. On this day it was the tax collector who admied his unworthiness and opened himself up to receiving the mercy of God. All of us need to prayerfully ask for the mercy of God.
